U PG Student Department of English Nehru Arts And Science College Thirumalayampalayam, Coimbatore ABSTRACT Girish Karnad, well known writer (born May 19, 1938, Matheran, Bombay Presidency [now in Maharashtra], India—died June 10, 2019, Bengaluru, Karnataka), Indian playwright, author, actor, and film director whose movies and plays, written mostly in Kannada, explore the present by way of the past. After his graduation from Karnataka University in 1958, Karnad studied philosophy, politics, and economics as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford (1960–63). His first play, the Yayati (1961), critically acclaimed, while he was at Oxford. Centred on the story of a mythological king, the play established Karnad’s use of the themes of history and mythology that would inform his work over the following decades. Karnad’s next play, Tughlaq (1964), tells the story of the 14th-century sultan Muḥammad ibn Tughluq and remains among the best known of his works. What always astonished me was the fact that he wrote all his plays in Kannada and not in English. Basically Karnad belong to the Rannade theatre. Girish Karnad uses Bhagavata as chorus. Like chorus in ancient Greek drama he reports all the important events and developments which are essential for the development of plot. Other devices and conventions of folk tales and folk theatre like masks, curtains, dolls, the story within a story etc. -

His rise as a playwright in 1960s, marked the coming of age of Modern Indian playwriting in Kannada, just as Badal Sarkar did in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi, and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi.[1] He is a recipient[2] of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India. For four decades Karnad has been composing plays, often using history and mythology to tackle contemporary issues. He has translated his plays into English and has received acclaim.[3] His plays have been translated into some Indian languages and directed by directors like Ebrahim Alkazi, B. V. Karanth, Alyque Padamsee, Prasanna, Arvind Gaur, Satyadev Dubey, Vijaya Mehta, Shyamanand Jalan and Amal Allana.[3] He is active in the world of Indian cinema working as an actor, director, and screenwriter, in Hindi and Kannada flicks, earning awards along the way. He was conferred Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India and won four Filmfare Awards where three are Filmfare Award for Best Director - Kannada and one Filmfare Best Screenplay Award. Early life and education Girish Karnad was born in Matheran, Maharashtra. His initial schooling was in Marathi. In Sirsi, Karnataka, he was exposed to travelling theatre groups, Natak Mandalis as his parents were deeply interested in their plays.[4] As a youngster, Karnad was an ardent admirer of Yakshagana and the theater in his village.[] He earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in Mathematics and Statistics, from Karnatak Arts College, Dharwad (Karnataka University), in 1958. -

Rai, Sonepat – 131029, Haryana (India) 1 Girish Karnad (1938-2019) A renowned Kannada playwright, author, actor and film director, Girish Karnad was born on 19 May 1938 at Matheran, Bombay Presidency (now Maharashtra). After graduating from Karnataka University in 1958, Girish Karnad studied philosophy, politics, and economics as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford (1960–63). After his return to India, Girish Karnad started working with the Oxford University Press in Chennai, 1963, resigned in 1970 to devote full time to writing. At the young age of 35, he became the Director of the Film and the Television Institute of India, Pune (1974–1975), was also its Chairman (1999-2001). He was a visiting Professor at the University of Chicago, 1987–88. He served as the Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi (1988–93), and the Director of the Nehru Centre, London (2000–2003). Girish Karnad started his career in acting and screenwriting in a Kannada movie, Samskara (1970) and acted in more than 50 films including Hindi and other regional languages. The notable among them are Vamsha Vriksha, Swami, Manthan, Nishant, Ahista Ahista, Nagamandala, Sankeerthana, Dharam Chakram, Hey Ram, Iqbal, China Gate, Pukar, Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai. He played the role of Swami‟s father in the popular TV serial „Malgudi Days‟. Girish Karnad has been a recipient of several National Filmfare Awards -- Best Director and Best Screenplay. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1972, Padma Bhushan in 1992 and Jnanpith Award in 1999. -

Based on Girish karnad’s serious explorations of folklore, mythology and history, the subject of his plays reflect the problems and challenges of contemporary life, and endeavor to forge a link between the past and the present. The creative intellectual that he is obviously views the subjects of his plays from his own perspective develops them in the crucible of his own imagination and personal experiences, and employees them as a medium to communicate his own independent and original feelings, thoughts and interpretations.(dodiya 89). Though known for his controversial themes, his plays are widely read and enjoyed because of his wonderful dramatic techniques, vivid images and symbols and his outstanding ability to portray some of the harshest and bitter most realities of life with forthright simplicity. Whereas Indian classical and folk theatre is at the centre of grish karnad’s plays. Karnad keeps the reactions of his audience in his mind while writing his plays and he deliberately uses myth and history to sugar coat the bitter realities of life. Key words Own perspective Endeavour Interpretations Vivid images Forthright simplicity Girish karnad’s grand works His first play, yahati (1961),was written neither in english nor in his mother tongue konkani. Instead, it was composed in his adopted language kannada. The play,which chronicled the adventures of mythical characters from the mahabharatha, was an instant success and was immediately translated and staged in several other indian languages. -

Jnanpeeth Awardees from Karnataka The Jnanpeeth Award is the highest literary honour conferred in the Republic of India. An Indian citizen who writes in any of the official languages of India is eligible for the honour. The award carries a cheque for Rs. 5,00,000.00 a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Vagdevi. The Jnanpeeth Award was instituted on May 22, 1961 The first award was given in 1965. Its first recipient was Malayalam writer G. Sankara Kurup in 1965. Kannada has won eight, the highest number of Jnana Peeth Awards, the most prestigious literary award given by the Government of India. The poets who won them are: 1. He got his B.A. and M.A. degree in Kannada literature at Maharaja's College, Mysore and he became lecturer in Kannada at the same same College and he became a professor and a principal, and retired as the Vice-chancellor of the University of Mysore.
