Highlights The total number of conrmed cases in Somalia is 2 204, including seventy-nine (79) associated deaths (CFR 3.6%) and 418 documented recoveries. The median age of the 2 204 conrmed cases is 47 years (age range: 1-110 years) and 28% are female. The median age of the 79 reported deaths is 69 years (age range: 29-107 years). The meeting was very helpful in providing direction on how WHO will continue to provide technical and other forms of support to States in combating COVID-19 pandemic. In Galmudug, two district-level coordination meetings were conducted during this reporting week in Abudwak, Adaado and Dhusamareb. District and regional teams conducted weekly supportive supervisions to oversee RRT achievements, challenges and provide on job training. 3 Southwest state MoH conducted coordinating meeting with WHO/OCHA/UNICEF and discussed how to implement online mapping tool that enables systematic information collection about COVID-19 response and risk communication and community engagement on monthly and bi-weekly basis. Surveillance and laboratory detection A total of 831 suspected cases were identied across the country this reporting week, 697 of which were tested and 289 of those tested were conrmed positive. In Galmudug, WHO trained and deployed 17 RRTs in Adado district which recently identied 47 COVID-19 conrmed cases. The RRTs identied 17 suspected cases, conducted contact tracing for 16 suspected cases who were advised to do self-quarantine. 35 of 47 EWARN facilities submitted reports this week. During this reporting week 174 samples (110 from Galgadud, 64 from Mudug) were collected and sent to national public health laboratory for conrmation. Fourty-seven (47) of 110 samples tested positive, while the remaining 64 samples were being processed. In Hirshabele, two laboratory technicians were trained on COVID-19 sample collection and were deployed in Jowhar Isolation Center. Lack of PPEs in Belad-weyne is hindering collection of COVID-19 Samples. Two COVID-19 alerts were reported in EWARN. These alerts were veried, and the cases are currently quarantined at home as there is no isolation center in Jalalaqsi. The RRTs visited 132 households in Jowhar town and 515 households in Belad-weyne during this reporting week. 10 suspected cases were identied which were currently being investigated. The MoH of Southwest state has trained and deployed 89 Integrated community surveillance teams. Each team consists of 3 CHWs (jointly with UNICEF) who are deployed in 4 districts (Baidoa, Baraawe, Marka and Elberde). the team was designated to conduct House to house visits as a strategy to increase early detection of suspected COVID-19 cases. As a part of EWARN expansion 17 new health facilities were included in to the Early Warning Alert and Response Network (EWARN) with plans to expand reporting sites to all districts. Risk communication In Galmudug, the RRTs visited 6,917 households during this reporting week and delivered COVID-19 awareness and preventive measures and also referred cases to hospital. Since the deployment of RRT, 37 181 household have been visited in Galmudug. The number of EWARN health facilities displaying COVID-19 IEC materials are 35 out of 47. In Southwest State, 35 partners are working together to provide COVID-19 awareness and risk communication messages to the community. Risk communication and awareness campaigns on COVID-19 on radio is ongoing. Billboards including are displaying COVID-19 promotional and educational messages for preventive measures. Over 35 partners are working on this pillar. 4 In Jubaland, community stakeholders, local authority, religious leaders and local health workers were sensitized about risks associated with non-compliance to social distancing among some community members, primarily in overcrowded markets. Local authorities emphasized the need for physical and social distancing. In Puntland, 43 EWARN health facilities displayed COVID-19 IEC materials and three announcements were made on mounted vehicles during this reporting week. Four radio and four TV airings on COVID-19 awareness messages were conducted. Case management In Jubaland, during this reporting week, WHO Public Health Emergency and State Surveillance Ocers trained RRTs to conduct screening at Kismayo sites including Dhobley, Dolow, Luuq, Belad-xawa and Kismayo and also to provide community awareness messages through TV and radio. In Somaliland, COVID-19 positive cases are not admitted in isolation or quarantine sites due to inadequate follow-up and stigma. Most people are not willing to stay in the isolation site if they are not feeling ill. In coordination with IOM, WHO distributed 39 cartons of PPEs to the MOH of Southwest state for use in the POEs in Xudur, Elbarde and Baidoa. Supplies will be redistributed to various point of entries (POEs). WHO also provided two oxygen concentrators to the isolation center in Baidoa. 5 The International Organization for Migration (IOM) supported the ministry of health of Southwest state to provide the training to POEs frontline health care workers of Baidoa and Hudur airport as well as land crossing points. The training in took place on 30 and 31 May 2020. A total of 15 participants from Baidoa and 7 participants from Hudur took part in these trainings. The purpose of the training was to enhance the capacity and preparedness of the frontline health workers in regard to screening and preventive measures of COVID-19 infection. Resource mobilization: The Logistics Cluster, jointly with WFP’s Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), has been supporting the air transport of MoH medical teams and COVID-19 supplies over 6 metric tonnes including (oxygen concentrators, PPE, Cholera sample collection receptacles and surgical face masks) to key locations across Somalia. From 28 May – 4 June 2020 over 6 metric tonnes of COVID-19 supplies and 115 ocials were transported to Dollow, Beletwyne, Afmadow, Bardera, Kismayo, Galkayo, Burte Bulo, Dhushamareb, Hudur and Garbaharey. The loan and installation of one Mobile Storage Unit for MoH has also been provided for medical equipment in Mogadishu – installation was completed on 3 June 2020. The isolation center at De-Martini hospital in Mogadishu. The center continues to receive support from the government, UN agencies and private sector to improve case management for COVID-19.
