The folk and rock singer and songwriter was the most influential figure in the urban revival of the 1960s and 1970s; his lyrics, music, and performing style had an important impact on all types of rock music. Dylan grew up in Minnesota; strongly influenced by Woody Guthrie, he went to New York in 1961. As his songs became popular, he became the acknowledged leader of the protest song movement of the early '60s. Drawing upon elements of folk, , and rock, he continued to experiment in ways that encouraged other singers to do likewise. Dylan was inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Most recently, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards ceremony in February 1991.

Laura Nyro has inspired and influenced many musicians and music lovers. Brought up on city life and summers in the country, she wrote the classic "And When I Die," to be popular- ized by Peter, Paul, and Mary, as well as Blood, Sweat and Tears, by the time she was seven- teen. She introduced a particular style of creative freedom in contemporary songwriting, using provocative and impressionist harmonics, song structures, chord progressions, and changing rhythms. To date, she has recorded nine albums and has three new projects in the works. She has performed in clubs and concert halls throughout America, Europe, and Asia.

When Bill Crofut and Chris Brubeck perform together, anything goes: they program every- thing from to folk to blues and classics. Their combined talents bring traditional tunes to life and make new arrangements sound like old favorites. Their association has steadily evolved over the last two decades; they met as neighbors in Connecticut when Chris was only thirteen. After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy at seventeen and then attend- ing the University of , Chris toured with his band and later joined his father's quar- tet, keeping in touch and doing special projects with Bill. As the result of a Christmas concert Chris created for the Houston Symphony, the duo has since appeared on symphony and concert tours, as well as with the Crofut Ensemble. Bill Crofut's international career has taken him throughout the world; his work encompasses concerts, television, recordings, and radio. He has also authored two books.

Making a return appearance at Tanglewood, Trent Arterberry has brought the wonder of mime to more than 250,000 people worldwide. With his authentic hurdy-gurdy organ and trained monkey, Hurdy Gurdy, monkey & me's Tony Lupo evokes the days of yesteryear when children would gather at the mere sound of a hurdy-gurdy to hear the magical instrument and watch the animal's antics. Their appear- ances on national and local television programs, and at fairs, festivals, shopping malls, con- ventions, fundraisers, colleges, and businesses throughout New England, have created thousands of special memories for adults and children alike

Murph, the physical comedian began his entertainment career after receiving a degree in physical education from East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. In addition to compet- ing as a professional freestyle skier, he co-founded two touring companies, was an instructor at the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Clown College, and taught juggling at the Ecole Nationale du Cirque in Paris. Combining the magic of circus acts, the bite of the stand- up comedian, and the refined movements of the mime and gymnast, Murph has brought his unique style to festivals, comedy clubs, colleges, universities, and special events throughout the world. This year's Fourth of July festivities mark his fifth appearance at Tanglewood.
