April 7, 2008 SUBJECT: 1

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God Micah 6:8

Hello Everyone,

We share with you activities to support the Virtue for the month of April - “Justice”. Additional activities and prayers are also posted on the home page of our web site at www.tcdsb.org

Working in partnership with our parents and parishes, we consistently strive to support students in living the call of their faith. Our hope is that this will result in building just relationships and in lasting peace amongst all.

As a Catholic school board, we provide many opportunities for students to participate in building relationships of justice and peace through community partnerships or mission trips of immersion and service. These trips at times lead to travelling to other parts of the world with the goal of enhancing the lives of the less fortunate. The gospel mandate to "do justice" is also evident through the many community service programs provided by our schools through their involvement in their immediate and wider community.

Dennis Murphy recently wrote, “If the Catholic education system hopes to have continued support and public funding, what we need is a clear account not simply of what this system does for the Catholic community, but how it contributes to public life”.

Catholic education continually promotes social and moral responsibility through our social teachings of the Church and through the many social justice activities. Our teaching combined with our outreach activities, allow students to grow in awareness of social justice issues. It re-affirms our beliefs that all humans have dignity; each person deserves to be valued, and to always treat one another with respect and compassion.

Through the leadership of so many in our schools and the learning opportunities granted to our students, we are proud and re-assured on a daily basis that our students are actively engaged in activities in their school and their communities that regularly “contributes to public life”.

We trust that the suggested activities, which can be found on our web site, will assist you with planning your Justice Virtue activities. We thank you for your continued commitment to allow students to express themselves through a variety of methods while focused on the monthly Virtue.

“If you want peace, work for justice” Henry Louis Mencken

The Coarse Acting Show By Michael Green Author of The Art of Coarse Acting

Six plays each destined for disaster! The coarse acting show offers up a menu of theatrical parodies that celebrate the best and worst of amateur theatre: missed cues, misplaced props, daft direction , & dedicated but dreadful overacting!

The Cherry Sisters – Chehkov Light - And we’re not kidding about the “light”! The Vagabond Prince – a 10 minute musical romp with gypsies and soldiers ! All’s Well That Ends as You Like It : Shakespeare’s forgotten comic masterpiece! Il Fornicazione: An Italian operetta – with no orchestra! Last Call for Breakfast – Beckett would NOT be proud of this absurdist romp! Moby Dick – 482 pages in 15 glorious minutes!

Art sale helps build Kenyan school Art 4 Hope tickets on sale for April 23 event April 1, 2008 04:28 PM TAMARA SHEPHARD

Reading last summer about the United Nations' seven millennium development goals fueled teenager Olga Lesau's determination to build a primary school in Kenya. Soon after, Lesau became inspired to leverage her artistic talents, as well as those of her Etobicoke School of the Arts' (ESA) peers and professional artists, to fundraise to build a school in the east African nation with the charity, Free the Children.

"I got really interested in the UN's goal of education," Lesau, 17, said yesterday during a break from class. "I thought, 'I'm a student at an arts school which is a privilege, an indulgence really in the modern world.' I thought it would be really interesting to pursue this idea of children helping children." The result: Art 4 Hope - A Mysterious Art Exhibition and Sale to be held Wednesday, April 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Lakeshore Arts, 2422 Lake Shore Blvd. W. in Mimico.

Children helping children is the mandate of Free the Children. The charity is building schools in the Maasai Mara area of Kenya in the African Rift Valley for thousands of children aged six to 12. There the Maasai, a rural people who raise cattle and goats, have little access to education and health care. Tickets are still available for Art 4 Hope. Fifty "virtual" tickets are being sold for $50 each. Each ticket buys one of 50 original works of art created by a "mystery" artist, whether an ESA student, alumni, teacher, student from another participating school or a local artist.

Lakeshore Arts, a not-for-profit arts charity in south Etobicoke, is partnering with Lesau on the project. "It's about fostering a youth who's an artist herself, who's very interested in pursuing a career in the arts who is also aware of her civic duty," Lakeshore Arts' Kathleen Burke, gallery director on the project, said of Lesau. "Olga is very dynamic, very driven and very focused. It's also a great fit for us. We're a charity and Free the Children is a charity." President of ESA's charity club, Kids Offering Willing Support, Lesau is spearheading the project with seven other club members.

Artwork for Art 4 Hope is being contributed by ESA visual artists in grades 10 to 12, as well as students from Michael Power-St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School, Bishop Allen Academy, St. Clements Catholic School, Toronto French School and Markham District High School.

Names will be drawn randomly the night of Art 4 Hope, with each ticket holder given one minute to choose his or her favourite work of art to take home. Tickets are still available for a limited time. Tickets may be ordered through credit card by calling Lakeshore Arts at 416-201-7093 or send a cheque payable to Lakeshore Arts to Lakeshore Arts, 2422 Lake Shore Blvd. W. Toronto, ON, M8V 1C4.

All funds raised go toward the $8,500 cost of building a school in Kenya with Free the Children. The ESA student council is also fundraising toward the goal. The keen teen approached numerous community organizations last fall for support of the project. Lakeshore Arts responded, and the idea for Art 4 Hope was born. Support for the project has been overwhelming, Lesau said. "When I started the project, I didn't think I'd get much response," she said. "It's very heartwarming how people have responded. It has been great."

Craig Kielburger founded Toronto-based Free the Children at age 12 in 1995 after reading a newspaper article about another 12-year-old boy, Iqbal Masih in Pakistan who had been murdered for bringing world attention to the conditions endured by children working in the carpet-making industry.

Since then, Free the Children has built more than 500 primary schools in 16 countries on three continents.

St. Jude Wins City Championship for Junior W5H March 20, 2008

Once in a while, not that often, a combination of people and events come together to create a special atmosphere and produce spectacular results. Well, this year’s Junior W5H team fits the scenario.

Last year’s team made history by winning our first Divisional Pennant in Junior W5H competition. A core of that same team along with some new additions continued where last year’s team left off.

So, in the end this year’s team won a Divisional Pennant; survived an elimination round; won a regional pennant and went on to beat the odds and win at the City Finals. The pennant was secured as the best Junior W5H team in the entire TCDSB (150 schools)!

Special congratulations go out to participants: Alfonso Davila (captain), Mark Cannataro (assistant captain), David Furlan, David Pecile, Anthony Giansante, Alex Tran, Andres Rivera, Michelle Jacques, Sarah Matti, Wani Rombe, Angelo Acosta and Christian Acevedo. Congratulations go out to the Research and Development Department: David Cannataro and Cameron Rosier. Special congratulations go out to coaches Miss Ferrari and Mr. Russo.

ST. MARY’S SECONDARY SCHOOL LEADS THE WAY IN STUDENT NUTRITION by Ulla Knowles, Community Representative for Student Nutrition Programs in TCDSB Schools

On April 1, 2008, St. Mary's Secondary School hosted 15 representatives from the Assembly of First Nations and school administrators from First Nations schools from across Canada as far away as British Columbia and Yukon Territory. The group visited the school's breakfast and snack programs to get a first-hand look at a successful secondary Student Nutrition Program. Menu items for the day included French toast, juice, milk and an assortment of fresh fruits prepared and served by the students. Following the visit to the breakfast program, the guests attended a Q & A with principal Adrian Della Mora and program coordinators Steve de Quintal and Lise Harrison. The guests benefited greatly from the expertise of the team at St. Mary's as well as the opportunity to participate in the program allowing for dialogue between students and other nutrition program committee staff and the guests. Information gained from this site visit and the connections made here will be taken back to the First Nations communities as they roll out a National First Nations School Nutrition Program initiative in ten communities across Canada.

St. Aidan Catholic School is awarded The Barb and Marek Brodzki Literacy Award

The Angel Foundation for Learning extends sincere congratulations to St. Aidan Catholic School for winning The Barb and Marek Brodzki Literacy Award. The $500.00 award will be presented at the Annual Literacy Tea on April 15, 2008 in the Atrium at CEC.

The proposal, formulated by Erin McTernan, Special Education Teacher at St. Aidan, outlines that the funds from The Barb and Marek Brodzki Literacy Award will be used to purchase a combination of resources that will not only foster a literacy program inspired by the Four Blocks, but will also help build social skills in oral communication.

The Barb and Marek Brodzki Literacy Award honours the memory of Barb Brodzki, who devoted many years of her life to special needs children. Barb was passionate in her love of special needs children and providing them with quality literature. Marek’s name was added to this award posthumously in recognition of his support of Barb’s dedication and his own interest in literacy.

Join us as we pay tribute to St. Aidan at the 5th Annual Literacy Tea on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. The tea will be held at CEC from 4:30 pm to 6: 30 pm. A donation of $20.00 is required and proceeds from the tea will be donated to The Barb and Marek Brodzki Award to continue to fund the annual literacy award established in their name. The Angel Foundation for Learning will issue a tax receipt for the donation.
