As you will be aware, the Director of Education Laurence Findlay issued a letter regarding the release of Provisional Grades to pupils by Wednesday 23rd June and we are confident we will meet that deadline. Here is the letter from Mr Findlay: Dear Parent/Carer, National Qualifications 2021 Further to my letter dated 1 April 2021, and as we move toward the latter stages of assessment evidence gathering under the SQA Alternative Certificate Model, I wish to provide you with an update regarding the remaining weeks. Firstly, I am pleased to report that Aberdeenshire received extremely positive feedback on the manner in which our processes have been developed and implemented. This scrutiny activity was undertaken by Education Scotland in their National Review of the implementation of the Alternative Certificate Model. Publication of this report by Education Scotland is expected shortly. Throughout this term, while assessment evidence gathering has been ongoing, young people will have been kept informed of their progress by their teachers through learning conversations. Provisional grades based on demonstrated attainment remain subject to the completion of the relevant quality assurance processes both within and between schools which will continue into June. Once the process and all stages of determining Provisional Grades is complete, young people will be provided by their school with a collation of the grades being submitted to the SQA.

    Message from Mrs Milne, Head Teacher As 2016 comes to an end, we share with you some of the highlights of the past months. 2016 has been a tremendously successful school year with pupils achieving success in a wide range of activities in and out of school and senior pupils excelling in their examinations. However most importantly we see our Term 3 Diary young people grabbing the opportunities presented to them to develop their skills 5/1/17 Start of Term 3 and help make them ready for life beyond school. At a recent Aberdeenshire 9/1/17– S2 reports issued event celebrating pupil volunteers, there were two successes for Alford Academy this week with S5 pupil Jack Watt being highly commended in the Young Person category 16/1/17 - 27/1/17 S4-S6 assessment period and our S3 ‘Y Factor’ team also receiving a highly commended award in the 23/1/17 – Parent Council Creativity category. Great examples of young people who have developed their Meeting 7pm skills in leadership, teamwork and communication. 23/1/17 – S3 reports issued this week We have much to look forward to in 2017. Now we are settled into our new 10 -15/2/17 – school campus, we will continue to look at how we can improve the many and varied closed to pupils aspects of school life. Our Student Council representatives, who gather feedback 16/2/17 – S3-S5 course choice evening from other pupils and generate new ideas, will continue to play an important role. 21/2/17 – S4 Parent As we move forward our transition to a 3-18 school and continue improving how Evening we plan and deliver learning, we will work closer and better, not only with Alford 1/3/17 – S2 Curriculum Primary, but also our twelve other Primary Schools.

In Aberdeenshire we are committed to providing the right support, in the right place, at the right time. Children’s Services (education and social work) will work in partnership with you and others (such as health professionals) to ensure we meet your child’s needs. Local schools for all Your child’s needs will be met in the local school at classroom level. Your child will follow the same curriculum as their peers, but may need some approaches and strategies such as adaptations to teaching and learning materials. Other assistance may be through technology (software programmes), adaptation to timetabling and curriculum flexibility, access to support for learning staff, visiting teachers or therapists, or small group and/or targeted support as appropriate. All schools are working towards being autism and dyslexia friendly with an emphasis on nurturing approaches. This means that your local school will support your child’s language, literacy, numeracy and communication needs; along with their social and emotional development. Staff will be confident, equipped and supported to meet the needs of all pupils. Training will be provided on a regular basis to all staff.     Appendix Garioch 1 In the delivery of the Local Development Plan (LDP2016) we are conscious that any proposal for new development within towns and villages is likely to be a local “main issues” even if it does not have the far reaching consequences of the 19 main issues reproduced in the bulk of the Main Issues Report. In addition we feel it appropriate to provide some information on the status of existing allocated sites in settlements so that communities can see exactly what stage development promoted by the LDP2012 might be at. 2 We have also engaged with Community Councils over what should be the “settlement objectives”. These are brief statements that try to capture what land use planning should try to deliver for individual settlements, whether supporting local services or providing opportunity for a specific item of strategic infrastructure such as a relief road. They represent a justification for any new allocations and guide development management decisions on the merits of development proposals. We have reproduced the settlement objectives from the Local Development Plan 2012 in this appendix, as modified by the advice we have received from Community Councils. 3 The settlement analysis also identifies “protected land”. This is land that was protected from future development because it has a specific value to the community. 4 Finally the analysis provides an evaluation of the development proposals that have been made to us for inclusion in the new plan. These are referred to as “officers’ preference” sites and “other options”. In the light of our conclusions on Main Issue 12 “land supply and distribution” there is only one site in Garioch that we would recommend is included in the new plan.

    Item: 5 Page: 16 Education & Children’s Services REPORT TO EDUCATION & CHILDREN’S SERVICES COMMITTEE – 30 JANUARY 2020 2019-BASED SCHOOL ROLL FORECASTS 1 Reason for Report / Summary 1.1 Education & Children’s Services publishes School Roll Forecasts for all primary and secondary schools in Aberdeenshire on an annual basis. 2 Recommendations The Committee is recommended to: 2.1 Approve the publication and circulation of Appendix 1 as the official Aberdeenshire 2019-based School Roll Forecasts. 3 Purpose and Decision-Making Route 3.1 School roll forecasts allow Education & Children’s Services to plan resources effectively, both in terms of staffing levels across schools, and with regard to the capacity of buildings and works that may be required. 3.2 The 2019-based School Roll Forecasts were discussed at each area committee between November, 2019, and January, 2020. The comments from each area committee are detailed in sections 3.4 to 3.9 below. 3.3 Appendix 1 has been updated following the approval by the Education & Children’s Services Committee at its meeting on 5 December, 2019, of the Consultation Report on the Review of Inverurie Primary School Catchment Areas. Garioch Area Committee considered both the original forecast for the Inverurie network and the amended forecast provided in this report, which took account of changes to catchment areas, if approved. 3.4 Banff and Buchan Area Committee commented that collaboration between schools should be encouraged, particularly between Rathen and Tyrie Schools to allow children to take part in activities such as team sports. They also reflected that the Fraserburgh re-zoning exercise had been ongoing for a significant period of time and the process should be reviewed and progressed.

    Early Intervention & Prevention Update Update to ADP Committee 16th September 2019 The EI&P group is not currently meeting. Alcohol Brief Interventions (ABIs) Your role in Alcohol & Drugs training has been delivered to 117 tenancy staff across the Shire in collaboration with Police Scotland. Various disciplines within tenancy services attended predominately Housing Officers, Sheltered Housing Officers and Early Intervention Officers but also staff from the Community Safety team and Community Justice as well as Housing Occupational Therapists (OT). Four sessions were held in the North (2 x Fraserburgh & 2 Peterhead), two sessions in Central (Inverurie) & 1 in the South (Stonehaven). Those attending wanted the following from the training - more information on how to help, how to deal with A&D in their role, how to raise the discussion, more confidence on how to discuss, signs and symptoms, how to help folk move on from problematic use, what the pathways are and how to access services and how to signpost, among others. The sessions gave an overview of Alcohol and the cost of alcohol related harm in Aberdeenshire, information and interactive activities on the alcohol unit guidelines, why ABI’s are useful and the background evidence for same. Screening tools including the scratchcards, further information was also given on cuckooing and information on drugs with examples of substances shown. The session was ended with further information on screening, delivering an ABI and information on Aberdeenshire Alcohol & Drug services and the ASSET Gateway service and Scottish Families affected by Alcohol & Drugs services information leaflets (SFAD). Comprehensive resources were distributed including the scratchcards and unit glasses and other information leaflets on alcohol & drugs and links to other online resources including Hi-Net, & Grampian Health information online resources (HIRS) and Sobering Thought among others.

    Education and Children’s Services CONSULTATION INVITATION PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY 2018-2021 “LEARNING TOGETHER IN ABERDEENSHIRE” Introduction You are invited to take part in the consultation on the draft Parental Involvement and Engagement Strategy 2018-2021 which demonstrates the commitment by Aberdeenshire Council to improve the quality and the extent of parents’ involvement and engagement in their child’s learning and the important role they play in their child’s education.
