Freshwater Fish Survey of Homadola-Nakiyadeniya Estates, Sri Lanka
FRESHWATER FISH SURVEY OF HOMADOLA-NAKIYADENIYA ESTATES, SRI LANKA. Prepared by Hiranya Sudasinghe BSc. (Hons) Zoology, M.Phil. reading (University of Peradeniya) INTRODUCTION The diversity of freshwater fishes in Sri Lanka is remarkably high, with a total of 93 indigenous fishes being recorded from inland waters, out of which 53 are considered to be endemic (MOE, 2012; Batuwita et al., 2013). Out of these, 21 are listed as Critically Endangered, 19 as Endangered and five as Vulnerable in the National Red List (MOE, 2012). In addition, several new species of freshwater fishes have been discovered in the recent past which have not yet been evaluated for Red Listing (Batuwita et al., 2017; Sudasinghe 2017; Sudasinghe & Meegaskumbura, 2016; Sudasinghe et al., 2016). Out of the 22 families that represent the Sri Lankan freshwater ichthyofauna, the family Cyprinidae dominates, representing about 50% of the species, followed by the families Gobiidae, Channidae and Bagridae, which represent seven, five and four species, respectively. The remainder of the other families are each represented in Sri Lanka by three species or less. Four major ichthyological zones, viz. Southwestern zone, Mahaweli zone, Dry zone and the Transition zone were identified by Senanayake and Moyle (1982) based on the distribution and the endemism of the fish. The Southwestern zone shows the greatest diversity, followed by the Mahaweli zone, with the least diversity observed in the Dry zone. About 60% of the freshwater fishes occur both in the dry and the wet zones of the island while the rest are more or less restricted to the wet zone. Of the endemic fishes, more than 60% are restricted to the wet zone of the island while about 30% occur in both the dry and the wet zones. -

Our Nature | December 2019 | 17 (1): 19-30 Spatio-temporal variation of fish assemblages in Babai River of Dang district, Province No. 5, Nepal Punam G.C and Jash Hang Limbu Central Department of Zoology, T.U., Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal E-mail:[email protected] Abstract Spatial and temporal variation of fish assemblages were investigated seasonally from October 2018 to May 2019. Fish assemblages were agglomerated with environmental variables both to spatial and temporal scales. Water temperature, dissolved Oygen, free carbon-dioxide, pH and water velocity of water of each site were measured. Based on analysis of similarities (ANOSIM), fish assemblages were significantly different in spatial variation but not in temporal variation. A total of 1,024 individuals belonging to 5 orders, 9 families and 15 genera and 24 species were collected. The dominated species were Puntius sophore, followed by P. terio, P. ticto and Barilius bendelisis. The Redundancy Analysis (RDA) vindicated that environmental variables of water temperature, pH, water velocity and free carbon-dioxide were found to be contributed variables to shape the fish assemblage structure of Babai River. The cluster analysis delineated that similarity between fish species decreases as the distance of sites increased. Extreme hydro -climatic events and its consequent shifts in seasonality lead to water scarcity in dry zone aquatic resources such as Vavuniya reservoir, threatening fish species richness and abundance. Weekly filed surveys were made to collect biological, ecological and hydro -climatic data from January, 2013 to July, 2014. Fish species composition a nd abundance in the catch were estimated by using random sampling at the landing site. Clarias brachysoma, Esomus thermoicos and Labeo lankae were the endemic freshwater fish species identified along with 16 indigenous and 8 exotic species. A significantly higher abundance of indigenous species was found in July and August 2013. During these periods, higher rainfall was observed but water level receded to medium level. Proceedings of a Workshop on the Development of a Genetic Improvement Program for African Catfish African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) production has gained considerable importance in a number of African countries. The species has several desirable attributes that make it attractive for aquaculture development. It is easy to reproduce, it does not require specialized feed, it tolerates high stocking densities, it accepts artificial feed, it tolerates poor water quality, and very importantly, it is highly sought after in local markets and economically viable in pond production systems. The species is endemic to Africa. In 2007 the WorldFish Center organized a workshop in Accra, Ghana, hosted by the Water Research Institute, to review the status of the catfish industry in Africa and develop recommendations on how best to approach the issue of genetic improvement programs. The results of the workshop are presented in this volume. Reproductive Biology of Channa Punctata (Bloch, 1793) from Mandalay Environs
1 Yadanabon University Research Journal, 2019, Vol-10, No.1 Reproductive biology of Channa punctata (Bloch, 1793) from Mandalay Environs Htay Htay Aung, Mie Mie Sein Abstract A total of 383 specimens of Channa punctata were collected from Mandalay environs during the study period from June, 2016 to May, 2017. Sex ratio, length-weight relationship, gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, and fecundity were conducted. The total length of females was ranging from 14.5 cm-21 cm and that of weight, ranging from 32 g-120 g. The total length of males, were ranging from 15.5-22 cm and that of weight, ranging from 38.5 g- 140 g. The sex ratio for male to female was 1: 0.76. Gonadal maturity stages namely, immature, maturing, mature and ripe of maturity in both sexes were recognized during the study period. An inverse relation was observed between GSI and HSI values during the study month. The absolute fecundity of C. punctata ranged from 4667.0 - 9143.46 eggs with the relative fecundity varied from 66.27 - 99.76. Fecundity-ovary weight gave a better relationship in comparison to fecundity-total length and fecundity-body weight relationship. However, as the monthly GSI values in male and female of this species were high during June to August and even to September, the spawning season of C. punctata to fall between June to September. Abstract: Local communities in some Asian, African and American countries, use plant toxins in fish poisoning for fishing activities; however, the effects of this practice on the particular wild fish assemblages is unknown. This study was conducted with the aim to investigate the effects of fish poisoning using Tephrosia candida, on freshwater fish diversity and abundance in streams at the boundary of the World Natural Heritage site, Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka. A total of seven field trips were undertaken on a bimonthly basis, from May 2013 to June 2014. We surveyed five streams with similar environmental and climatological conditions at the boundary of Sinharaja forest. We selected three streams with active fish poisoning practices as treatments, and two streams with no fish poisoning as controls. Physico-chemical parameters and flow rate of water in selected streams were also measured at bimonthly intervals. Fish were sampled by electrofishing and nets in three randomly selected confined locations (6 x 2 m stretch) along every stream. Fish species were identified, their abundances were recorded, and Shannon-Weiner diversity index was calculated for each stream. Streams were clustered based on the Bray-Curtis similarity matrix for fish composition and abundance. -

BIAWAK Journal of Varanid Biology and Husbandry Volume 11 Number 1 ISSN: 1936-296X On the Cover: Varanus douarrha The individuals depicted on the cover and inset of this issue represent a recently redescribed species of monitor lizard, Varanus douarrha (Lesson, 1830), which origi- nates from New Ireland, in the Bismark Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. Although originally discovered and described by René Lesson in 1830, the holotype was lost on its way to France when the ship it was traveling on became shipwrecked at the Cape of Good Hope. Since then, without a holotype for comparitive studies, it has been assumed that the monitors on New Ireland repre- sented V. indicus or V. finschi. Recent field investiga- tions by Valter Weijola in New Ireland and the Bismark Archipelago and phylogenetic analyses of recently col- lected specimens have reaffirmed Lesson’s original clas- sification of this animal as a distinct species. The V. douarrha depicted here were photographed by Valter Weijola on 17 July and 9 August 2012 near Fis- soa on the northern coast of New Ireland.
