Some argue that the problems result from an incomplete or careless editorial redaction, and might even provide evidence of the changing theology of the 10hannine community as it moved through successive historical developments (diachronic reading). Others attempt to resolve the inner tensions by positing that the supposed difficulties actually signal changes of mood or spiritual insight, and for that reason belong where they fall (synchronic reading). A third alternative, suggested more frequently in recent years, tries to bring these divergent readings toward some harmony though a different exegetical approach. Reflecting on the influence of the Hebrew Bible on the content and style of the Fourth Gospel, these interpreters see patterns of both micro-chiasm and macro-chiasm in its literary development.     ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: CHI-THINKING: CHIASMUS AND COGNITION Patricia Ann Lissner, Doctor of Philosophy, 2007 Dissertation Directed by: Professor Mark Turner Department of English The treatise proposes chiasmus is a dominant instrument that conducts processes and products of human thought. The proposition grows out of work in cognitive semantics and cognitive rhetoric. These disciplines establish that conceptualization traces to embodied image schematic knowledge. The Introduction sets out how this knowledge gathers from perceptions, experiences, and memories of the body’s commonplace engagements in space. With these ideas as suppositional foundation, the treatise contends that chiastic instrumentation is a function of a corporeal mind steeped in elementary, nonverbal spatial forms or gestalts. It shows that chiasmus is a space shape that lends itself to cognition via its simple, but unique architecture and critically that architecture’s particular meaning affordances. We profile some chiastic meanings over others based on local conditions. Chiastic iconicity (‘lending’) devolves from LINE CROSSING in 2-D and PATH CROSSING in 3-D space and from other image schemas (e.g., BALANCE, PART-TO-WHOLE) that naturally syndicate with CROSSING. Profiling and iconicity are cognitive activities. The spatio-physical and the visual aspects of cross diagonalization are discussed under the Chapter Two heading ‘X-ness.’ Prior to this technical discussion, Chapter One surveys the exceptional versatility and universality of chiasmus across verbal spectra, from radio and television advertisements to the literary arts. Wendland Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Department of Ancient Studies March 2011 ii DECLARATION iii ABSTRACT The compositional strategy, structure, and peak of the book Hebrews are heavily debated. Most scholars analyze Hebrews from only a Western linear approach. Other scholars like Vanhoye, Neeley, G.H. Guthrie, and Gelardini have suggested a chiastic perspective. Despite the insights gained from a chiastic approach, the linguistic analyses of Neeley and G.H. Guthrie posit linguistic peaks that appear incompatible with the chiastic peak of Vanhoye, Neeley, and Gelardini. Neeley, G.H. Guthrie, and Westfall claim to apply linguistic principles to the text, but with quite different conclusions. This study focuses on the form and function of the literary units and the relationship of these units to the overall book-level structure. Initial considerations include defining the individual literary units and determining the significance of lexical and syntactical recurrences within the pericopes. Such recurrences are important features for determining textual boundaries, transitions, and compositional patterns. Subsequently, this study evaluates literary units in relation to each other in light of book-level correspondences (syntactical and semantic) as a means of positing an overall structure and compositional strategy for the book of Hebrews. Unlike the linear study of Westfall, the relationships of non-sequential literary units are considered as well as sequential units (i.e., both linear and concentric patterns).

ABSTRACT Perek Helek, the last chapter of Tractate Sanhedrin in the Babylonian Talmud (BT), is unusual in consisting almost entirely of aggadah (non-legal material). The present study is a source and literary analysis of six units (sugyot) from the chapter, which are almost continuous over ten pages of Talmud. The sugyot relate to specific groups and individuals who, according to the Mishnah, are denied a place in the World to Come. They cover subjects in the books of Genesis, Numbers and Samuel. Comparisons with the Tosefta, Palestinian Talmud and midrashim suggest that the BT is less concerned with the World to Come than Palestinian sources are. Rather, it focuses on the wrong-doing of the groups and individuals and issues of justice and authority.

Murder is disrup- tive to the very fabric of human life. It instills in the community anxieties, horror, fear, chaos, vengeance, and blood feuds. It throws the normal boundaries of human powers in the world into personal turmoil, into metaphysical uncertainty, and into cosmic imbalance. The groundbreaking legal historian F. W. Maitland once famously said, “But if some fairy gave me the power of seeing a scene of one and the same kind in every age of history of every race, the kind of scene that I would choose would be a trial for murder, because I think that it would give me so many hints as to a multitude of matters of the first importance.”1 And I would agree, but with one elaboration: I would add, “And show me a homicide narrative in a sacred text and we can know more about the laws, social beliefs, and ultimate values of its adherents than by any other way.” Many homicide laws and stories are found in scripture. In a recent volume of the Jewish Law Association Studies, which contains the papers from a meeting in Antwerp on Jewish law and narrative, I dis- cuss twenty-three homicide narratives in the Bible and seventeen in the Book of Mormon.2 Those forty stories are factually entangled and legally complicated. Much has been written about the laws of homicide and refuge in the Hebrew Bible3 and also about the process of extracting legal material from biblical narratives.4 As Assnat Bartor has recently BYU Studies Quarterly 59, supplement (2020) 151 152 v Chiasmus: The State of the Art stated, in biblical texts “the narrative and the laws are not only com- bined together—at times they are actually merged.”5 Among the findings of interest in that article is the observation that chiasmus is used both in the law codes and also in the legal narratives regarding homicide.

    CHIASTIC STRUCTURE IN BRITISH LIBRARY MANUSCRIPT COTTON NERO A.x, Article 3 by DEBORAH LORENE–CHURCH MILLER (Under the direction of Dr. Christy Desmet) ABSTRACT In this dissertation I argue that the four poems appearing in the Cotton Nero A.x Manuscript have a discernable sequence, structural integrity, and rhetorical purpose: Together, the four poems constitute a Text. Instead of being a randomly bound, miscellaneous anthology of works by, perhaps, the same anonymous fourteenth–century alliterative poet, the Manuscript reveals a coherent discourse, sequenced in an orderly way to achieve a particular rhetorical purpose. The underlying “logic” of this sequence is peculiarly Medieval and, paradoxically, postmodern because it is based on a visually and aurally apprehended rhetorical scheme that relies on apposition. The apposition is materially and rhetorically elaborated by means of balanced numeration of lines, a transitional “hub,” and the placement of the poems and their illustrations in the volume itself. In this Manuscript, the sophisticated intertwining of themes, character types, and poetic styles operates within the rhetorical framework of a chiasmus. The failure to see or trust an integrating mechanism in the Cotton Nero A.x Manuscript can be accounted for in three ways. In Chapter One, I examine the historical neglect of those rhetorical figures classed as schemes, as opposed to tropes, particularly the scheme chiasmus. I conclude that chiasmus offers an excellent and frequently used means of organizing text, acting as visual and aural text marker that functions non– logically and non–hierarchically. In Chapter Two, I demonstrate how the Manuscript’s material and editorial histories have tended alternately to undermine or support the perception of the Manuscript as a Text.
