ADDITIONAL NOTE :

Eugene had been invited to give two lectures at the E'cole des Beaux Arts . At the end of the first one that he gave in French, the USIA Director suggested that he use a translator for the next lecture. Eugene agreed even though he felt comfortable giving the lecture in French, it had been 15 years since he had spoken French regularly.

Shortly before the afternoon lecture was to begin, the interpreter came into the room. He was wearing a Davidson College "T" shirt. We greeted him warmly because Davdson College is very close to Charlotte, North Carolina. We thought he was an American who had gone to Davidson College and was now visiting Abidjan. We were wrong, he was a native of Abidjan who had attended Davidson College. He sat through the lecture without making any comments.

After the lecture, Eugene sought out the Davidson College alumnus and asked why he hadn't said anything during the lecture. His answer was that Eugene had been well understood and he couldn't add to what was already said.
