A season‐win total stuck at six has taken some of the shine off that success, but the fact remains that Vincent Lavenu’s team has been influential all season long. Founded in: 1992. Wins in 2016 (as of Aug. 22): 6 RIDERS TO WATCH Romain Bardet (FRA): Age 24, turned pro in 2012. Palmarès: 5 wins including two stages of the Tour de France. This season: 1 win; 2nd in the Tour de France, 2nd in the Critérium du Dauphiné, 2nd in the Tour of Oman. In 2016, this French climbing specialist continued his impressive rise to the higher echelons of world cycling, proving that he was one of the few men who could give Chris Froome a run for his money, both in the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France. Though tired after the Rio Olympics, he’ll be eager for end‐of‐season success in Canada, where he has done well in the past (5th in Montréal in 2014, and 7th last year). Alexis Vuillermoz (FRA): Age 28, turned pro in 2013. Palmarès: 5 wins including Stage 8 of the 2015 Tour de France. This season: 2nd in the GP de Plumelec, 3rd in the French National Championships. PUTTING SHOULDER PADS ON SCHLECK: HOW THE BUSINESS OF PROFESSIONAL CYCLING COULD BE IMPROVED THROUGH A MORE AMERICAN STRUCTURE Chris Deubert* INTRODUCTION t was announced in August 2010 that three-time Tour de France I winner Alberto Contador, less than a week after his latest victory, was leaving his Kazakhstan-based team, Astana, at the end of the sea- son.1 Contador reportedly rejected a two-year, nearly $13 million deal from Astana,2 instead choosing to sign with Bjarne Riis’ Danish-based Saxo Bank-SunGard team for a reported two years and $20 million.3 The move was particularly notable because Contador was essentially replac- ing rider Andy Schleck, who announced that at the end of the 2010 sea- son he would be leaving Riis’ squad to form a team based in his native Luxembourg.4 Schleck finished second to Contador in both the 2009 and 2010 Tours de France, including a controversial thirty-nine second victo- 5 ry in 2010. -

NEWS RELEASE For immediate release Philippe Gilbert to Race in Quebec and Montreal Grands Prix Cyclistes Events No. 1 Rider on UCI WorldTour Confirms He’ll Be Taking Part Saint-Lambert, Quebec, Friday, July 8 – Great news for the organizers of the Quebec City and Montreal Grands Prix Cyclistes races: The UCI WorldTour’s leading rider, Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto), currently competing in the Tour de France, has announced he will be taKing part in the Quebec City and Montreal events. One of the top competitors in this year’s Tour de France (winner of the first stage, green jersey on four stages, and polKa-dot jersey on three), Gilbert began racing professionally in 2002 and has 45 wins to his credit, with 14 of them coming so far in 2011. Reigning champion of Belgium, he usually focuses on the spring and fall classics. This year, he is determined to retain his top UCI WorldTour ranKing. In both Quebec City and Montreal, Gilbert will be the man to beat. Last spring, at the age of 31, he made professional road-racing history when he won four consecutive high-profile events: the Flèche Brabançonne, the Amstel Gold Race, the Flèche Wallonne and Liège–Bastogne–Liège. These four races are held in the Ardennes region of Belgium and the Dutch province of Limburg; the last three, known as the Ardennes classics, are all on the UCI WorldTour calendar. “He is an ideal rider for the Quebec City and Montreal Grands Prix Cyclistes events.
