Sea the Stars THE AGA KHAN STUDS Success Breeds Success SEA THE STARS His fi rst two year olds in 2013 PAT SPREAD From the moment he started racing in Ireland, to his final victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Sea The Stars’ record was a model of excellence and consistency. He rose through the ranks to win a Group 2 as a juvenile and six Group 1s at three with the regularity of a metronome. He showed unparalleled versatility to handle the Irish plains, the Rowley Mile and Sandown Park; the undulating Epsom Downs, the Knavesmire at York and the unique test that is Longchamp. Three years after being retired to Gilltown Stud, this same notion of consistency springs to mind when speaking of his first progeny’s character and their attitude to work: “even-tempered”, “fast learners” and “easy movers” are recurrent phrases used by their trainers and there is great anticipation in the bloodstock world as to how Sea The Stars’ impeccable track record will be replicated by his progeny. You will find details of the stallion’s first generation of two year-olds in the pages that follow. We thank all the breeders who have sent him some of their finest mares in the last three seasons. We look forward to working with you again this season and wish you great success in the years to come – at stud, at the sales and on the racecourse. • Qatar Goodwood Festival
Your complete guide to the QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL Presented with the compliments of Introduction Welcome to the 2018 Qatar Goodwood Festival magazine presented by Timeform, which features previews and tips for all of the big races at the track this week. Staying events have always been a prominent feature of British Flat racing which, unlike some jurisdictions, offers a rich variety in the distances of races in the calendar. Much has been said over the years about the need to protect—and enhance—the programme of staying races in Britain, so when Weatherbys Hamilton announced earlier this year that a new bonus scheme for stayers worth £1 million was to be introduced this season, it was well received. The WH Stayers’ Million is on offer to any horse that wins one of four races in May—the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot, the Ormonde Stakes at Chester, the Yorkshire Cup at York or the Henry II Stakes at Sandown— before going on to claim victory in each of the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, the Goodwood Cup and the Lonsdale Cup at York. The bonus prize has come along at just the right time for connections of last year’s Goodwood Cup winner Stradivarius, who is a short-priced favourite to retain his crown and move one step closer to landing the inaugural WH Stayers’ Million, having won the Yorkshire Cup and Gold Cup in his two previous starts this season. He will be without the services of regular pilot Frankie Dettori in the feature race on Tuesday, but Andrea Atzeni is an able deputy, having won both the Queen’s Vase and this race on him last season, and everything looks set fair for another big run.
