A Guide for Owners & Trainers A GUIDE FOR OWNERS & TRAINERS TUESDAY 30 JULY – SATURDAY 3 AUGUST 2019 THE QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL Welcome To Goodwood Proudly boasting an illustrious history and heritage, Goodwood is an inspirational and unique venue that has often been described as the world’s most beautiful racecourse. I am delighted that the continuing success of the Qatar Goodwood Festival has culminated in further race upgrades, most notably The Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes, upgrading to Group 2 status last year. Goodwood has, for more than 200 years, been about the best racing in the most English of settings, accessible to everyone. Our partnership with Qatar has enabled us to significantly increase the prize money on offer this and it is, as always, key for us that this new money does not just sit at the top end but trickles down to the grassroots of the entire race programme. Royalty, celebrities, sporting heroes, statesmen and diplomats have all enjoyed visiting Goodwood. It now gives me great pleasure to invite some of the very best overseas owners and trainers to be a part of this truly great horseracing Festival and join our ambition to become the best race week experience in the world. The Duke of Richmond and Gordon Owner of Goodwood Over £5million in prize money will be awarded over five thrilling days at Goodwood Racecourse from 30 July – 3 August 2019 The Qatar Goodwood Festival, now in its fifth year, has established itself as one of the most competitive and entertaining weeks in the international racing calendar. Including the increase in prize money for the upgraded Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes the total prize purse for the Festival now exceeds £5.5million and no race will be run for less than £25,000. Following 2017’s elevation of the Qatar Goodwood Cup to Group 1 status we are very grateful to the BHA and the European Pattern Committee for supporting and approving the further development of our race programme. This resulted in the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes being upgraded from a Group 3 to a Group 2 contest last year. We hope that this race will cement its position as part of a high-profile programme for stayers across Europe. The Qatar Nassau Stakes is the highlight of the Thursday of race week ensuring a focus on the very best fillies in particular. The supporting card on this day also features the Group 3 Gordon Stakes and will therefore serve to compliment the unique ambience of Ladies’ Day. The Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes is the highlight of the whole week and always serves up a mouth-watering race with the very best milers in the world sure to line up. We look forward to seeing the entries for this £1million contest in 2019 with great expectation. This brochure should include everything that you need to know from the race programme for the week. If, however, you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact the team whose details can be found towards the back of this booklet. We very much hope that your horse(s) will be able to compete at Goodwood and become part of its great history, alongside which we would love to host you in the unique setting of the Goodwood Estate. Yours sincerely, Alex Eade Racecourse General Manager AN UNRIVALLED RACECOURSE THE COURSE + ground rises d - ground falls The racecourse at Goodwood is meticulously prepared by Clerk of the Course, Edward Arkell, and his highly skilled team using their collective wealth of experience to create a fantastic racing surface. rise all roun 1m 1f & 1m 2f Overseas trained horses have done well at Goodwood in recent seasons: the Australian mare Ortensia landed the Qatar King George 1m Stakes in 2012 while the French have a strong record headed by Champion Miler, Solow, taking the Qatar Sussex Stakes in 2015 - 1 in 70 and Al Jazi leading the field home in the 2016 & 2017 renewal of the L’Ormirans Queen’s Plate. • Interpreting Tempo and Rubato in Chopin's Music
Interpreting tempo and rubato in Chopin’s music: A matter of tradition or individual style? Li-San Ting A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales School of the Arts and Media Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences June 2013 ABSTRACT The main goal of this thesis is to gain a greater understanding of Chopin performance and interpretation, particularly in relation to tempo and rubato. This thesis is a comparative study between pianists who are associated with the Chopin tradition, primarily the Polish pianists of the early twentieth century, along with French pianists who are connected to Chopin via pedagogical lineage, and several modern pianists playing on period instruments. Through a detailed analysis of tempo and rubato in selected recordings, this thesis will explore the notions of tradition and individuality in Chopin playing, based on principles of pianism and pedagogy that emerge in Chopin’s writings, his composition, and his students’ accounts. Many pianists and teachers assume that a tradition in playing Chopin exists but the basis for this notion is often not made clear. Certain pianists are considered part of the Chopin tradition because of their indirect pedagogical connection to Chopin. I will investigate claims about tradition in Chopin playing in relation to tempo and rubato and highlight similarities and differences in the playing of pianists of the same or different nationality, pedagogical line or era. I will reveal how the literature on Chopin’s principles regarding tempo and rubato relates to any common or unique traits found in selected recordings.
