Jones Foundations Pvt Ltd has Proposed proposes to construct a multistoried residential group development S.No: 55lIB2,58l7A,IB,2AL,2A2,2B &, 2C Sithalapakkam village, St Thomas mount panchayat union, Sholinganallur taluk, Kancheepuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu. The total plot area of the project is about 7639.10 Sq.m will have a total built up area of about 30303.24 Sq.m. As per EIA notification 2076, any new or modernization building and construction project with built-up area more than 20,000 sq m and less than 1,50,000 sq m falls under Project schedule 8(a) and category B and thus requires to obtain environment clearance frorn concerned authority prior to the start of construction. The Conceptual Plan describes all the detaiis of the project and its specific activities that will be considered for investigation of the significant adverse impacts. The report also provides specific measures that will be put to practice to minimize the impacts on the Environment. T.2 SITE DESCRIPTtrON The project site is located at Sithalapakkam village, St Thomas Mount Panchayat Union, Sholinganallur Taluk, Kancheepuram District in the state of Tamil Nadu at latitude 72"52',43.65"N and longitude 80o1 1'15.12"E. Site Connectivity The Project Site is well connected by road, rail and air ways. The project Site is well connected by 5th cross street (18m approach road) in the Eastern direction, and Ottiyambakkam main raod is NE direction, The nearest railway station is Thambaram Railway Station at 8.98 km, North western direction. Abstract Wetlands are ecosystems or habitats for specific plants and animals that are saturated with water. The presence or absence of water determines their formation, processes and characteristics. Wetlands are of great importance to man and nature as it purifies water, reduces flood, stores water, prevents soil erosion, supports varied biodiversities etc. Starting about thousands of years in urban areas of the world and typically a few hundred years ago in most other coastal areas, humanity has profoundly impacted, degraded or destroyed many coastal wetlands worldwide by direct physical degradation and pollution. Ironically, reduced coastal wetland increases threat to human safety at the same time, shoreline development exposes populations to coastal hazards such as tsunamis, erosion, flooding, storm waves and surges. This paper tries to evaluate the importance of Wetlands and the present scenario of wetlands and the steps taken by the world community to protect and preserve it. There is no proper sewage system provided in the neighbouring municipalities namely Sembakkam Municipality, Tambaram Municipality, Pallavaram Municipality and Chitlapakkam Selection Grade Town Panchayat and the entire untreated sewage from this area is illegally drained into Sembakkam lake which affects the purity of the lake. 2. The storm water drain has become sewage drains through which the municipal untreated sewage is being let into the lake. No attempt was made to desilt the lake for the last two decades which resulted in increase in encroachment and thereby the area of the lake has shrunk.

Chennai is among the worst affected as it has suffered long spells of water shortages combined with rapid and haphazard urbanization of its ever-expanding suburbs. In light of the above, the water bodies that supply precious water to the human population and to the flora and fauna gain paramount importance. The present study was undertaken to asses the quality of water in three important lakes of southern suburban Chennai which recharge the ground water as well as harbours a diversity of plant and animal life. All the three lakes suffer from encroachments, dumping and burning of wastes, and unchecked inflow of domestic and industrial effluents. The parameters studied were: colour, odour, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, alkalinity, total hardness, total solids, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, sulphate and chloride. INTRODUCTION Rapid development, increase in population of the metro cities and urbanization of their suburbs have resulted in the manifold increase in environmental pollution. The most affected are the water bodies which become highly polluted by addition of foreign materials such as plant and animal matter, and domestic sewage and industrial effluents.
