[ABNER] LEAD. STAR NAMES ONLY Late 30s to mid 50s. Abner Beech is a proud, stubborn farmer of Upstate New York, a man strong and honorable who is suddenly cast out by his community and reviled as a traitor—for Abner is a devout Democrat, and the year is 1862. A Civil War is upon the land, and Abner is against it. Vocally. Spurred on by his nemesis Jee Hagadorn, Abner’s neighbors shun him, scorn him, and refuse to trade with him. His son Jeff runs away to fight for the Union; in response, Abner and his wife M’rye disown the boy. When word comes that Jeff is missing in action at Antietam, they file it away without comment—or so it seems on the surface. To celebrate the Democratic victory in the New York election, Abner raises a defiant bonfire. It is met by a consuming counter fire that burns the Beech home to the ground. Frozen out of his community, burned out of his home, Abner is bloodied and battered but unbowed. The moral example of Esther Hagadorn, the noble act of rescue performed by neighbor Ni Hagadorn, and the startling return of a maimed Jeff deepen Abner’s understanding of his place and his family. He is, finally, no less stubborn and no less a Democrat—but he is, after coming through the fire, a better man.

[JEE] LEAD. STAR NAMES ONLY Early 40s to mid 50s. Jee Hagadorn is a wiry, nervous bundle of pure electricity and self-righteousness. He is a skilled cooper and the widowed father of two. Jee is a man of fervent religious expression— but one who in his zealotry has hit upon a fundamental truth: that slavery is immoral, an abomination in the eyes of a righteous God. Jee’s fervency, however, is so all-consuming that he has lost sight of the homelier truths taught by his Good Book: for instance, love thy neighbor. He loves humanity—but individual humans, not so much. Jee is so caught up in the war, and in the role of the Union Army as the avenging hand of God, that he leads the persecution of his neighbor, the antiwar farmer Abner Beech. It is Jee’s children, the intelligent and empathetic Esther and the easygoing but ultimately wise Ni, who live the faith that Jee has only preached. Nothing, it seems, can shake Jee from the certitude of his righteousness—until it appears that his hounding of Abner has inadvertently caused a horrific consequence - another casualty of the war.

Jeff has fallen in love with Esther Hagadorn, daughter of Abner’s chief tormentor, Jee Hagadorn. Under Esther’s influence, Jeff comes to regard slavery as a sin that must be absolved by war. So he joins the Union Army, to the horror of his father Abner and his mother M’rye, and soon finds himself at the battle of Antietam. Captured by the Rebs, Jeff is sent on a long march to the prison at Richmond. Along the way he loses an arm to gangrene. Rescued from Richmond by his best friend Ni Hagadorn, Jeff makes it back home. Although he returns to a homefront that has been scorched and razed by the war, Jeff is among the blessed and lucky, as he is welcomed back into the embrace of Esther and his family.

STORYLINE: The play takes place at a seaside resort. Although the play was written in 1888, the adaptation makes the play seem contemporary. Adolph, an artist, is desperate for marital advice from Gustav, a visitor at the resort whom he has just met. Gustav manipulates Adolph into distrusting his wife, Tekla, who has been gone for several days. When Tekla arrives, Gustav hides out to observe their relationship. His jealousy at a fever pitch, Adolph tries to exert control over Tekla. When Adolph leaves, Gustav reenters, and we discover that he is Tekla’s first husband. He woos her almost to the point of leaving Adolph and returning to him, but ultimately his actions are solely to ruin Adolph and Tekla’s marriage.

The play is quite psychologically energetic, passionate and savage, but there is much humor as well, and all three actors need to have a good comic sensibility.

Her one goal is to serve her mistress, Medea. Like most craven people, she does not like change. The Nursemaid's fear often comes across as comedic - but, like most things funny, the flip side is a darkness that is nearly inconceivable and ultimately tragic. She may occasionally come across as unhinged. She needs to be full-throated in her use of classical text, but also fully in truth with excellent comic timing. JOANNE, THE MOTHER POSSESSED, is a woman overtaken by jealousy, rage and fear when she finds out her husband is going to marry Becca Greenwald, the woman with whom he had an affair. [SHERIFF/JASON] (early 40s): THE SHERIFF is a Stonington, Maine local, and he feels it. Which is probably why it's a surprise he's gay. Modern, with good comic timing, a bit boyish, he is no- nonsense and in pointed contrast to the very classical Woman of Corinth and the Nursemaid. Not too smart and could give two craps about it. That said, the Sheriff possesses a surprisingly sweet vulnerability underneath. If he were a dog he'd be a rescuer Husky. At the same time, the Sheriff is also a mystery, a protean shapeshifter. As JASON, the Greek mythological hero, he's a shapeshifting man haunted by his past inactions, a driven man on a mission to heal, a grieving man so full of that pain he travels through time and space to save the children and ultimately himself. So, he's dangerous when he needs to be, warm when he needs to be, silly when he needs to be, with a darkness underneath, a singularity of purpose and mission. This actor must also be able to play classical/Greek as well.

[MAN IN SLACKS/ A BROTHER] (early-to-mid-30s): The MAN IN SLACKS is actively contemplative, a vulnerable soul-searcher standing on the cusp of marriage, questioning questioning his own resilience and his ability to change and grow given what he's been through. A BROTHER is the Man in Slacks' 10-year-old child self (voiced by the actor, physicalized by a puppet the actor manipulates). You get the feeling there's a lot going on in his mind -- and there is: he's a masterful storyteller and he's been weaving stories and telling them to himself all his life as a means of survival. He has great inner turmoil, vulnerability, resilience, a fierce desire to save his sister, and is determined to hold out for hope. Both as a child and an adult he is deeply connected to his sister. [WOMAN IN A SUNDRESS/A SISTER] (late 20s - early 30s): The WOMAN IN A SUNDRESS as an adult is a survivor - a woman who was dragged down once and vowed to forever stay above surface. She is light and love, a grounded survivor who retained a sense of fun and grace. A Sister is the Woman in a Sundress' 8-year-old child self (voiced by the actor, physicalized by a puppet the actor manipulates). She is a child in the grip of a terrible trauma--she still has a sense of fun and maturity for her age, but is also prone to panic. [WOMAN OF CORINTH/BECCA GREENWALD (UNDERSTUDY)] (late 30s): THE WOMAN OF CORINTH is a member of the Greek chorus who kidnaps Medea's children in hopes of saving them from their homicidal mother. She is fierce, determined, and a shining light of hope. She might come across as naïve or zealous, but those qualities are born out of a sense of newfound purpose and drive: to save the children. After years of his time and skills being abused, his idealistic views of others have become completely twisted and replaced with a judgmental and aggressive distrust. His once thoughtful, considerate, and humorous nature has now been replaced with cynicism, sadness, and cold calculation. Walter is exceptionally intelligent and has a gift for language. Under the inhuman conditions at work, he often uses this gift to verbally destroy others when in conflict. When Walter is assigned to help Cydney, a seemingly incompetent co-worker struggling with a large project, he soon discovers a world of pain and beauty he could never have predicted. Cydney will wake up one day soon and be 40, having had no life of her own. And at some point every day, Cydney can't help but think of a time when her mom is dead and at least then the burden will be gone. To silence these thoughts, alcohol has grown from a relief to a dependence, and with her tongue lubricated, she has begun to cut loose on her mom, verbally attacking her with stunning cruelty. Her good heart has become dark, and tired. When the film starts, Cydney is responsible for a major financial presentation at work, but she's hiding the fact that she is behind. [DR. LASSEN] Male - 40 to 60 - all ethnicities - Supporting Dr. Lassen is the last of the psychiatrists that Hazel has seen in the past 12 years. She's been through foster home after foster home, adoptive parents left and right, and now, in her late teens, Dr. Lassen is the only psychologist to make it this far with Hazel, and getting her to actually open up and deal with her trauma. She's been honest, and Lassen is concerned for her well being.

He's committed to her, and he's seen progress. Hazel has been more forthcoming and open to Lassen than any other point in her life. Sadly enough, Dr. Lassen probably knows her better than anyone else at this point. Yet despite his progress, in these past couple weeks he's seemed to have come to face a brick wall; whether it's Hazel hiding and protecting herself, or her fear of him getting to close to what she really thinks and feels, Lassen is Hazel's last hope in helping her deal with her deep trauma and the perverse fantasies of murder that dwell in her mind.

Wardrobe: Think blazers, cardigans, corduroy, and collared shirts. A humble "professorial" look.

Production Note: Would only be needed one day, Sunday the 29th. Shoot will begin around 3pm and should be a half-day shoot for the actor portraying Dr. Lassen.

[CONSTRUCTION WORKER] Male - 30 to 50 - all ethnicities - Supporting Our "Construction Worker" is the first person that the audience sees Hazel fantasize about killing. As Hazel heads for school one morning, a construction worker who works on re-paving a sidewalk whistles and cat-calls to get her attention. Hazel, never being looked at or objectified in this way is caught off guard and stoically observes the man.

The construction worker, not getting the sort of reaction he wanted, blows her off and turns away, only to find his head being smashed in with a baseball bat by a doll-like woman with full doll make-up and a bow: Hazel.

[BEAUTIFUL WOMAN] Female - 30 to 40 - all ethnicities - Supporting Every Sunday, Hazel sits under a park tree and reads from "Through the Looking-Glass." She constantly see's this beautiful woman, whom walks her dog and crosses her path and she thinks "Will I ever be like her? How can I be her?"

On this particular day, the woman notices and waves to Hazel. Hazel, in between fascination and intrigue, follows the woman deeper into the park--and alone.

Whether fantasy or reality, Hazel appears to skip and transform behind the woman into a life size doll-like figurine and wielding a pair of huge blue scissors. In her quest for human attention, understanding and the idea of "feeling alive" - Hazel is fixated on the idea of murder. Since dealing with the murder of her parents, it's the only thing left that evokes something from Hazel at 64 all. But not cold blooded murder--Hazel sees killing as a whimsical, grandiose and magical experience. The idea is something strange, exotic and beautiful, just like this woman in the park and therefore this character serves as yet another temptation into fantasy, leading Hazel even further down the rabbit's hole.

Wardrobe: Something you would wear comfortably in an outdoor excursion, walking the dog, or simply jogging.

Production Note: Will only be photographed Sunday the 29th, starting around 10am and ending in the afternoon. Half day shoot with meal provided. MUST be comfortable with a Jack Russell Terrier and dogs in general. Must be willing to walk with the dog on a leash. Don't worry, he's not a professional actor but he is a very cool guy.

Storyline: After witnessing her father stabbing her mother then turning the blade on himself, HAZEL, a teenager, visits yet another psychologist to try and make sense of her emotional fantasies of killing people in order to make her feel alive. The question is, does Hazel actually act upon these thoughts or are they all just stuck in her head?

[ORVILLE WRIGHT] AGE 41 If Wilbur is the scientist, Orville is the artist. He is the dreamer, the sensitive one, and sometimes the pesky younger brother. He's a risk taker, and a constant source of entertainment for his brother Wilbur. He's an extrovert. Give him a stage and he'll be happy. He's in touch with his feelings more, in touch with nature and sees the beauty in simple things of life. He has a brilliant mind, but never shows off his intellect like his brother. Orville is thin. Fit but not muscular. He could easily run five miles quickly. He's handsome. Although he's 41, he still thinks of himself as a small-town boy with a big dream. In many ways, attached to his brother, dependent on his brother. He can hardly go anywhere or do anything without first consulting his brother. Now he seeks to vicariously live out his dream through them. He wants to somehow keep his name alive so his work will be recognized; then he would feel that his life was worth while. When the Wright's did not recognize him as he felt they should, he becomes incredibly bitter. He wrote to every newspaper with convincing articles disclosing the real truth the Wright's discoveries. But, he is incredibly disillusioned. He has a way with words. He gets to your heart quickly. He gets under you skin quickly. He's a charmer and well-liked by most people. You find yourself pouring out your secrets 68

to him five minutes after you meet him. If he were a used car salesman, he would be employee of the month all year round. But he can use these talents for good or evil. [CARRIE] AGE 27 She's kind and sweet, and is living her dream job as the Wright's housekeeper. She knew the Wright Brothers before they were the Wright Brothers, and stepped into their world when their mother left this world after a fatal battle with tuberculosis. If you asked her to run a mile, she would run seven. She's a hard-worker, a humble quiet soul, and faithful friend...in fact, she's family. She's the best listener in the world. Her gentle eyes and voice welcome any weary soul. She's a constant blaze of encouragement and hope, but today, she seems to have lost that flame. Prototype: Anna Kendrick

[DR. BUSHIEMER] AGE 70 Dr. Bushiemer is a specialist from New York. He's recognized as the most qualified doctor on the East Coast to treat tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases. He's a big fan of the Wright Brothers, and is grieved that he is meeting the Wrights under these horrific circumstances. He was confident that he could help Wilbur just like his other patients, but soon he realizes that Wilbur's condition is diseased beyond remedy. His ailment is not of the body, but of the soul. Dr. Bushiemer feels responsible to revive this national/global hero, and feels like a failure when he can't. He is short, balding, wears round glasses that match his round face. He's quiet. He and his wife have been married for 45 years. He's cool under pressure, but today, he's lost his calmness and is trying to regain it. Prototype: James Cromwell

[FRENCH LAWYER] AGE 45 The French Lawyer is a good-looking, finely dressed man with a quick mind. He's sneaky, slimy, and never plays fair. He takes pride in the fact that he's won every court case he's ever fought. He's not married, but has had many girlfriends. LOG LINE: First In Flight is an AFI short film based on the Wright Brothers. It takes place during the last 20 minutes Orville Wright has with his brother, Wilbur, who is dying of Typhoid Fever. He spends his final moments reflecting on their lives- the joys and pains, friendships and betrayals, successful flights and fateful crashes. Though they have taught the world to fly, they have made enormous sacrifices along the way. With years of partnering about to end, they are haunted by the question, "Was it worth it?"
