The presence of the aeolidacean Dondice parguerensis Brandon and Cutress, 1985, parasite of the cnidaria Cassiopea xamachana Bigelow, 1892 and Cassiopea frondosa (Pallas, 1774) is recorded for the first time in Venezuela. Progress in Mediterranean Bioinvasions Two Years After the Suez Canal Enlargement
ISSN: 0001-5113 ACTA ADRIAT., ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPER AADRAY 58(2): 347 - 358, 2017 Progress in Mediterranean bioinvasions two years after the Suez Canal enlargement Argyro ZENETOS Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters, 19003 Anavissos, Greece Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] The possibility that the recent expansion of the Suez Canal could trigger an entirely new twenty first century wave of invasions was investigated. Results showed that only 19 new alien species were detected after August 2015 (date of the last Suez Canal enlargement). Five of the newcomers have already established viable populations. Between August 2015 and August 2017 approximately 9,5 new species (mostly fish) entered the Mediterranean annually, 7 of them via the Suez Canal unaided. The next most important pathway is Transport - Stowaway: Shipping, while intentional releases from aquaria appear to play an impor- tant role. Our results confirm previous findings on the decreasing rate of introductions, which is not affected by the recent expansion of the Suez Canal. Conclusively, the rate of bio invasions via the Suez Canal has not “doubled” as anticipated but rather decreased in relation to previous years. This study was carried out, through a total of 271 scuba dives, from 2017 to the beginning of 2020 in four sites located along the Ionian coasts of Sicily: Catania, Aci Trezza, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla. Through a photographic data collection, 95 taxa, representing 17.27% of all Mediterranean marine Heterobranchia, were reported. The order with the highest number of found species was that of Nudibranchia. Among the study areas, Catania, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla had not a remarkable difference in the number of species, while Aci Trezza had the lowest number of species. Moreover, among the 95 taxa, four species considered rare and six non-indigenous species have been recorded. Since the presence of a high diversity of sea slugs in a relatively small area, the central-eastern coast of Sicily could be considered a zone of high biodiversity for the marine Heterobranchia fauna. FOREWORD Abundant fish and wildlife, unbroken coastal vistas, miles of scenic rivers, swamps and mountains open to exploration, and well-tended forests and fields…these resources enhance the quality of life that makes South Carolina a place people want to call home. We know our state’s natural resources are a primary reason that individuals and businesses choose to locate here. They are drawn to the high quality natural resources that South Carolinians love and appreciate. The quality of our state’s natural resources is no accident. It is the result of hard work and sound stewardship on the part of many citizens and agencies. The 20th century brought many changes to South Carolina; some of these changes had devastating results to the land. However, people rose to the challenge of restoring our resources. Over the past several decades, deer, wood duck and wild turkey populations have been restored, striped bass populations have recovered, the bald eagle has returned and more than half a million acres of wildlife habitat has been conserved. We in South Carolina are particularly proud of our accomplishments as we prepare to celebrate, in 2006, the 100th anniversary of game and fish law enforcement and management by the state of South Carolina. Since its inception, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has undergone several reorganizations and name changes; however, more has changed in this state than the department’s name. According to the US Census Bureau, the South Carolina’s population has almost doubled since 1950 and the majority of our citizens now live in urban areas. -

Introduction Gujarat has a long coastline of about 1650 km, which is mainly due to the presence of two gulfs viz. the Gulf of Khambhat (GoKh) and Gulf of Kachchh (GoK). The coastline has diverse habitats such as rocky, sandy, mangroves, coral reefs etc. The southern shore of the GoK in the western India, notified as Marine National Park and Sanctuary (MNP & S), harbours most of these major habitats. The reef areas of the GoK are rich in flora and fauna; Narara, Dwarka, Poshitra, Shivrajpur, Paga, Boria, Chank and Okha are some of these pristine areas of the GoK and its surrounding environs. -

BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 36(1): 139-144, 1985 A NEW DONDICE (OPISTHOBRANCHIA: FA VORINIDAE), PREDATOR OF CASSIOPEA IN SOUTHWEST PUERTO RICO Marielle Brandon and Charles E. CUfress ABSTRACT A new species of eolid nudibranch, Dondice parguerensis, is described from La Parguera, Puerto Rico. Major diagnostic features of the species include nine groups of cerata on either side; genital pores between the first and second groups of cerata; rhinophores with up to II annulations; masticatory process with about 54 denticles and about 20 radular teeth, with 7 denticles per side. This is the first report of the predatory association between the new species and the scy- phozoan Cassiopea. The principal host is C. xamachana, although C. frondosa can also be its host. The nudibranch feeds on the finer parts of the medusa's oral arms, on which it also lays its eggs. Like all other cnidarian-feeding eolids, Dondice parguerensis stores the nema- tocysts of its host, and the larger euryteles are selected in a ratio of 5 to I. At peak abundance during the months of November to February the eolid can be found on up to 80% (average 45%) of C. xamachana. and the average rate of infection is 2.3 nudibranchs per medusa. The nudibranch exhibits an aggregated distribution on the jellyfish. D. parguerensis has a life span of approximately 9 weeks. Newly laid eggs hatch in 2 to 6 days, and development is planktotrophic. Veligers apparently settle upon the scyphozoan, and rapid growth takes place after metamorphosis. Nudibranchs and their egg masses can be found year-round on Cassiopea. -

For this purpose, the material collected from the area between the years 2005 and 2009, within the framework of different projects, was investigated. The investigation of the material taken from various biotopes ranging at depths between 0 and 100 m resulted in identification of 286 mollusc species and 27542 specimens belonging to them. Among the encountered species, Vitreolina cf. perminima (Jeffreys, 1883) is new record for the Turkish molluscan fauna and 18 species are being new records for the Turkish Levantine coast. A checklist of Iskenderun mollusc fauna is given based on the present study and the studies carried out beforehand, and a total of 424 moluscan species are known to be distributed in Iskenderun Bay. The bivalves Pillucina vietnamica Zorina, 1978 and Alveinus miliaceus (Issel, 1869) were collected from sandy bottoms off Israel, whereas Gregariella cf. ehrenbergi (Issel, 1869) was recovered from a buoy originating from Port Said, Egypt, and stranded on the Israeli coast. The three species are first records for the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, we report range extensions for several gastropods: Varicopeza pauxilla (A. Adams, 1855) is recorded from Israel, Phidiana militaris (Alder and Hancock, 1864) from southern Israel (Ashqelon), and Viriola cf. bayani Jousseaume, 1884 from Israel and Crete. Shells and valves of an unidentified lucinid bivalve morphologically distinct from any known Mediterranean species were found along the Israeli Mediterranean shore.
