  • Dead Dead in the Bed”1 – Zbrodnia Jako Element Fabularny Muzyki Blackmetalowej

I det glimrande mörkrets djup Om religiöst gränsöverskridande, identitetssökande och meningsskapande i svensk extrem metallyrik Robert Andersson 2010 Examensarbete, Grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 15 hp Religionsvetenskap Religionsvetenskap C Människa-natur -religionsprogrammet Handledare: Juan Carlos Gumucio Examinator: Peder Thalén Abstract This study is an attempt to investigate religious perceptions and its development, function and connection to religious practise within the Swedish extreme metal scene. This is performed mainly by a qualitative method of investigation, studying lyrical content published on a number of extreme metal albums, thereafter relating the lyrical progression to the progession of the scene as a whole and also to the development of individual religious belief and practise. The lyrically expressed manifestations of religiosity within the extreme metal scene prove to be related to religious practise in some cases, most visibly in the Christian parts of the scene. The study also indicates that development of religious expression often is evident regardless of religious preference. This development also regularly relates to an increase in musical evolution and prowess often achieved with increased age and maturity. Musically and lyrically, the extreme metal scene displays transgressive attributes which assist both individual and group in the process of creating identity, meaning and individuality. Experiencing extreme metal, in concert or in the privacy of one´s own home, can be one way of perceiving spirituality in

Volume 15 Number 36 Championing the musically jaded for well over a decade FREE PMB #570, 21010 Southbank St, Sterling VA 20165-7227, USA • www.disposableunderground.com What Blue Collar War calls its assault on the metal and hardcore scene begins with the band’s war room in Northern Virginia. The guys have their opinions about not only the local music scene, but the musical landscape as a whole and economically struggling musicians within it. Here Blue Collar War collectively reads from its manifesto. Blue Collar War “Let’s get real: people in this scene are starving as is, working jobs, going to school, like myself, at George Mason University while working a thirty-three hour job on top of it all so I can graduate within the next year or so and get a real job. Being in a metal band isn’t a real job; it’s a real dream. It’s not realistic to think that you’ll make it in this dog eat dog world of commercial music. Being in a metal band and trying to make it big is like trying to win the lottery when you only buy one one dollar ticket per week.” For the young men in the band, the roots in metal go in relative terms far back. “I started listening to metal when I was in middle school. Say, ‘93, I got into AC/DC––Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap forever changed my life ... I hung out with a group of friends from middle school on, and we had friends who were four years older or so than us who initially started taking us to shows to see bands like Gwar, the Misfits, Pro-Pain, [and the] Ozzfest.

  • The Magic of Thulcandra Is That They're Really
“The magic of Thulcandra is that they’re really fucking good. It’s not just nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake.” (Decibel Magazine) One might argue that the artist’s intent is irrelevant. In Thulcandra’s case, taking the bands’ aesthetic intentions into consideration not only enriches and elevates the experience of the music, it also enhances its value for extreme metal. When Thulcandra was founded in 2003 by Obscura’s lead guitarist and vocalist Steffen Kummerer and Juergen Zintz, it was done with one intention: To celebrate the music of bands from the golden age of Swedish extreme metal such as Dissection, Sacramentum and Unanimated; songs that comprehend, reinterpret and pay tribute to old-school Swedish blackened death metal and its overall aesthetic. Yet, after the demo “Perishness Around Us” was released in 2004 and preparations for the recording of Thulcandra’s first studio album were already taking place, events took a grim turn. All activities came to an abrupt end when Juergen Zintz tragically committed suicide. Thulcandra was reborn when Tobias and Sebastian Ludwig (both Wraithcult, Ex-Helfahrt) und session drummer Seraph (Dark Fortress) joined forces with Kummerer in 2009 – and the band’s debut album “Fallen Angel’s Dominion” was finally recorded. With its release in 2010, a merciless winter storm was unleashed upon the masses that can only be described as the an accurate homage to Dissection, including the infamous “blue” Necrolord cover artwork and the grim reaper imagery. By doing so, Thulcandra was coming “as close as possible to reviving those fallen heroes of old” as angrymetalguy.com put it.

  • Ritual Black Metal Popular Music As Occult Mediation and Practice
Correspondences 1.1 (2013) 5–33 ISSN 2053-7158 (Online) correspondencesjournal.com Ritual Black Metal Popular Music as Occult Mediation and Practice Kennet Granholm E-mail: [email protected] Web: http://www.kennetgranholm.com Abstract From the creative fantasy of musicians to the fearful imaginations of concerned parents and fundamentalist crusaders, Metal music has frequently been linked to the occult. It is, however, only recently that the occult milieu as represented by initiatory orders and segments of the broader Extreme Metal scene have been brought close enough to each other to spawn an identifiable “Ritual Black Metal” scene characterized by explicit, systematic, and sustained engagements with the occult. Members of this scene, particularly the musicians involved in it, not only demonstrate an interest in occult subject matter that surpasses most of what came before, but explicitly claim their artistry to be an expression of the occult in itself—as divine worship or communion, an expression of and tool for initiatory processes, and/or an explication of seriously held beliefs. In this article I examine the Swedish Ritual Black Metal scene, with some detours to the Finnish scene when closely connected to the Swedish one, by looking at both scenic institutions and key artists. Keywords Extreme Metal; Black Metal; Dissection; Watain; Ofermod; Saturnalia Temple; Forgotten Horror; Jess and the Ancient Ones; The Devil’s Blood; Misanthropic Lucifer-Order (MLO); Temple of the Black Light; Dragon Rouge Introduction © 2013 Kennet Granholm.
