The improvement in the quality of higher education, therefore, deserves to be given tom-most priority to enable the young generation of students to acquire skill, training and knowledge to enhance their thinking, comprehension and application abilities and prepare them to compete, succeed and excel globally. Sustained initiatives are required to reform the present higher education system for improving and upgrading the academic resources and learning environments by raising the quality of teaching and standards of achievements in learning outcomes across all undergraduate programs in science, humanities, commerce and professional streams of higher education. One of the significant reforms in the undergraduate education is to introduce the Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) which makes it student-centric, interactive and outcome-oriented with well-defined aims, objectives and goals to achieve. The University Grants Commission (UGC) took the initiative of implementing the LOCF in the Colleges and the Universities of the country. Accordingly, the University of Kerala has decided to implement the LOCF in all its departments under the auspices of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). A series of teacher training workshops were organised by IQAC and the office of the Credit and Semester System (CSS), and the departments have revised the syllabus accordingly, through workshops and in consultation with academic experts in the field. GRADUATE ATTRIBUTES (GAs) The Graduate Attributes (GAs) reflect particular qualities and abilities of an individual learner including knowledge, application of knowledge, professional and life skills, attitudes and human values that are required to be acquired by the graduates of University of Kerala. The graduate attributes include capabilities to strengthen one’s professional abilities for widening current knowledge and industry-ready skills, undertaking future studies for global and local application, performing creatively and professionally, in a chosen career and ultimately playing a constructive role as a socially responsible global citizen. The Graduate Attributes define the characteristics of learners and describe a set of competencies that are beyond the study of a particular area and programme. Use education as a tool for emancipation and empowerment of humanity 6 BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT The Department of Music, University of Kerala has been established in the year 1998. Situated at the heart of the city in Trivandrum, this institution attracts lot of significance in the institutionalised education of Carnatic Music. Travancore is considered as one of the Principal seats of music, from the period of Swati Tirunal, the Royal composer. Being adjacent to the University women’s Hostel, it provides a pleasant atmosphere to the students from far off places. The Department offers regular courses such as MA, M Phil and Ph D courses in Music. The Department had also conducted MA –Music through Distance Education previously, through which many music aspirants have benefitted. Studying in the Department of Music, University of Kerala, provides a diverse experience. This Department holds the uniqueness in offering a set of electives such as Hindustani Music, Tala Ensembles and Instruments. This contributes the rare opportunity to become conversant with the different styles of music performance. While pursuing their concurrent courses, they also secure a firm foundation for public performances for both vocal and Instrumental. From its inception, The Department of Music has attained a prominent role in offering music education to many students. Over the past twenty two years, it has produced a significant number of Professionals and teachers in the field across the globe. The Department started publishing Peer Reviewed Academic Journal, named “Nadamrutham” in the year 2005. The Department has been conducting successive National Seminars/Workshops on various subjects, which in turn have the reflective influence in the academic and professional domains.
