CEU eTD Collection iii ABSTRACT This study describes the foundation of the Cairo Opera House (1869) and the creation of Aïda (1871) in the context of the opening ceremonies of the Suez Canal (1869). Doing so, the thesis introduces the concepts of political aesthetics and aesthetical politics as bridging principles between Opera Studies and Colonial Studies. The foundation event of the Cairo Opera is understood in the context of the “imperial set”. This concept is one of the theoretical results of the work: it defines the public visual expression of the imperial imagination of the Egyptian ruler, Khedive IsmÁÝÐl (1863-79). His cultural foundations are shown as serving the goal of political independence from the Ottomans and as means in the negotiation with the British and French colonial empires in a nineteenth-century Mediterranean culture. -

Swietłana Czerwonnaja An Egyptian Mosque of the Latest Times in Egypt, Europe, Asia, and America Recognition by European and world society of the universal importance of Egyptian sacred Islamic architecture (its classical heritage and achievements of that time) begins in the 19th century with the construction of the mosque of Muhammad Ali in the Cairo Citadel (1824-1848) and his perception by European observers (eg. such as Gustave Flaubert, Ida Pfeiffer, Georg Ebers, Pierre Loti) as the new "miracle of the world". References to masterpieces of Egyptian artistic heritage by European and American architects of the 20th century have been used to solve the construction problems of the first stone mosques in their own countries, such as: the Cairo-based Mosque of Al-Azhar / Shining (X century) served as a model of the Sunni mosque built by Polish architect Józef Płoszko in Vladikavkaz in 1906. Kait-Bey Mosque, Faradha Ibn Barkuk and other monuments of the Mameluk architecture (13th-15th century) were the patterns to follow, creative interpretation and "architectural citation" in the design of mosques in European capitals of the 20th century (for example: Main Kaunas Mosque, 1933, architect: Waclaw Michniewicz) and in Egypt itself (the architectural ensemble El-Sayyida Safiyya in Cairo (1977-1990), architect: Mohamed Rachid Abdullah Sabounji Eissa). The creative activity of the Italian architect Mario Rossi (1897-1961), who lived in Egypt from 1917, was a thread linking Egyptian and Muslim cultures in USA. In the first half of the 20th century he designed mosques in Cairo and Alexandria as well as the Islamic Center in Washington in 1957. -

ANTONIO LASCIAC TRA ORIENTE E OCCIDENTE LA VILLA SUL RAFUT Predica di San Marco ad Alessandria d’Egitto, Gentile e Giovanni Bellini, 1504-1507, Brera, Milano. INTRODUZIONE Qualche anno fa, mi era capitata l’occasione di scrivere l’introduzione a un impegnativo saggio di Francesco Krecic, Arsia, la bianca città del carbone, pubblicato nel 2012 nel n.17 della collana Relazioni, dalla Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici e Paesaggistici del Friuli Venezia Giulia, sovrintendente Luca Rinaldi nel quale si raccontava la vicenda di quella città di nuova fonda- zione, realizzata in epoca fascista nella parte dell’Istria che oggi si trova in Croazia. Il progetto per la città di Arsia, Raša in croato, inaugurata col nome di Liburnia il 4 novembre del 1937, è dell’architetto triestino, di origine ungherese e diplomato al Politecnico di Monaco di Baviera, Gustavo Pulitzer-Finali (1887-1967), che lo disegnò su commissione di Guido Segre, im- prenditore piemontese trapiantato a Trieste. Poco tempo dopo, lo stesso Segre lo incaricò anche della progettazione della città nuova di Carbonia, in Sardegna nel Sulcis, successivamente inaugurata il 18 dicembre del 1938. Diversamente da Arsia, la cui chiesa si presenta in forma di carrello da minatore rovesciato e il campanile ricorda le lampade da miniera, Pulitzer-Finali trasfuse in Carbonia elementi storici caratte- rizzanti i nuovi territori conquistati dall’Italia con la prima guerra mondiale, proponendo per la chiesa una copia del campanile di Aquileia, costruito dal patriarca Poppone nel 1301, il quale, assieme alla Basilica, veniva fatto visitare dai fanti italiani affi nché potessero riconoscere, nelle antiche vestigia, il motivo atto a giustifi care le cruente battaglie combattute sull’Isonzo per la presa di Gorizia, con tanta parte di coloro i quali persero poi la vita, tra cui moltissimi coscritti della brigata Sassari.
