A dissertation presented By Sana Tannoury Karam ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University December 2017 2 This dissertation is an intellectual and cultural history of an invisible generation of leftists that were active in Lebanon, and more generally in the Levant, between the years 1920 and 1948. It chronicles the foundation and development of this intellectual milieu within the political Left, and how intellectuals interpreted leftist principles and struggled to maintain a fluid, ideologically non-rigid space, in which they incorporated an array of ideas and affinities, and formulated their own distinct worldviews. More broadly, this study is concerned with how intellectuals in the post-World War One period engaged with the political sphere and negotiated their presence within new structures of power. It explains the social, political, as well as personal contexts that prompted intellectuals embrace certain ideas. Using periodicals, personal papers, memoirs, and collections of primary material produced by this milieu, this dissertation argues that leftist intellectuals pushed to politicize the role and figure of the ‘intellectual’. -

Fieldwork was conducted by Drs. Tony Ghanem, Miche Fahad, Ralph Karam, Chucrallah Chamandi, and was coordinated by Dr. Samer Abi-Chaker. Mr. Elie Hobeika was instrumental in data entry, analysis and report preparation. The project was also facilitated through the intervention of Mr. Mohammad-Ali Hamandi and Mrs. Rita Rahbany-Saad on behalf of the Syndicate of Private Hospitals and Ms. Hilda Harb on behalf of the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health (MOPH). MATERNAL MORTALITY RATIO IN LEBANON IN 2008: A HOSPITAL-BASED REPRODUCTIVE AGE MORTALITY SURVEY (RAMOS) A. INTRODUCTION A1. Rationale The complexity of ascertaining maternal deaths makes it difficult for many low income countries to measure the levels of maternal mortality, hence the lack of valid data on such avoidable deaths. A report prepared by international agencies (1) has recently assigned Lebanon to the group H of countries with “no national data on maternal mortality”. As a result, an arbitrary equation was used to determine that Lebanon’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in 2005 was 150 per 100,000 live births. The Lebanese government disputes this classification and its consequences. -

Original Language: Arabic Contents: English Translation Scan of Original Document 1/157 Beirut, Jun 17, 1949 Number 85/ The communists are preparing to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the independence of the Syrian and Lebanese Communist Parties with the strengthening of their branches in the regional specific committees by finding strong elements as supervisory secretaries for these committees. I have come across the text of a secret memo distributed by the central committee of the Lebanese Communist Party entitled; (The role of the Regional Secretary) that included the following: “We remind you that article 19 of the Party bylaws [page 2] states that “ The Regional Committee consults the Central Committee regarding the candidacy of the Regional Secretary.” If the party conference votes on this bylaw; that means that this matter has become insignificant and the Regional Secretary is a fighter with great responsibility, on whom party action is great dependent. -

Solley Marine Corps Command and Staff College Marine Corps Development and Education Command Quantico, Virginia 10 May 1987 ABSTRACT Author: Solley, George C., Major, USMC Title: Israel's Lebanon War, 1982-1985 Date: 16 February 1987 On 6 June 1982, the armed forces of Israel invaded Lebanon in a campaign which, although initially perceived as limited in purpose, scope, and duration, would become the longest and most controversial military action in Israel's history. Operation Peace for Galilee was launched to meet five national strategy goals: (1) eliminate the PLO threat to Israel's northern border; (2) destroy the PLO infrastructure in Lebanon; (3) remove Syrian military presence in the Bekaa Valley and reduce its influence in Lebanon; (4) create a stable Lebanese government; and (5) therefore strengthen Israel's position in the West Bank. This study examines Israel's experience in Lebanon from the growth of a significant PLO threat during the 1970's to the present, concentrating on the events from the initial Israeli invasion in June 1982 to the completion of the withdrawal in June 1985. In doing so, the study pays particular attention to three aspects of the war: military operations, strategic goals, and overall results. The examination of the Lebanon War lends itself to division into three parts. Part One recounts the background necessary for an understanding of the war's context -- the growth of PLO power in Lebanon, the internal power struggle in Lebanon during the long and continuing civil war, and Israeli involvement in Lebanon prior to 1982. -

Original Language: Arabic Contents: English Translation Scan of Original Document 30C/ 10 Communist activities The Conference of the Syrian-Lebanese Communist Party did not convene in Damascus on 20/12/1955 as I reported to you in an earlier message, but rather on 14/1/1956 in Damascus, at the home of Mr Ahmad Abaza located in the Kurdish area, under the Chairmanship of Khaled Beikdache (Khālid Bikdāsh). The events that impacted on the situation in Jordan and the mass demonstration that accompanied them were the reason behind the postponement; the Communist Party at the time wanted to postpone the meeting until the situation which followed these events becomes clearer. The first session of the meeting, which took place in the morning of 14/1/1956, was devoted to the Secretary General of the Communist Party, Khaled Beikdache’s report on the current situation in the Arab countries as a result of foreign pressure on Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. This pressure, he said, aims at isolating Syria from other Arab countries, involving Lebanon and Jordan in the Iraqi- Turkish Pact, and countering the strong position adopted by the Communist Party in support of the National Front established in these three countries to combat all kinds of colonial schemes. -

These without doubt merit much more praise… Niccolò Machiavelli, The Art of War (2003, 161) INTRODUCTION Abstract This thesis provides an analysis of the organizational politics of state supporting armed groups, and demonstrates how group cohesion and institutionalization impact on the patterns of violence witnessed within civil wars. Using an historical comparative method, strategies of leadership control are examined in the processes of organizational evolution of the Popular Defence Forces, an Islamist Nationalist militia, and the allied Lebanese Forces, a Christian Nationalist militia. The first group was a centrally coordinated network of irregular forces which fielded ill-disciplined and semi-autonomous military units, and was responsible for severe war crimes. -

POSITION PAPER The Genesis of Hezbollah June 12, 2016 Rachel Naguib INTRODUCTION In the late twentieth century, the Middle East has witnessed a rise of Arab nationalism and a resurgence of Islamic wave that is prominent in both its strength and scope. After being known as “the Switzerland of the Middle East”, Lebanon plunged into the law of the jungle. More specifically, the Islamic movement became the powerful resistance to the existent order, politically and socially that undermine the Lebanese state’s sovereignty. A Shiite movement such as Hezbollah in Lebanon is a clear example of this phenomenon. In the rural region of South Lebanon, 85% of the Shiites were over- represented among the poor working classes.1 Hezbollah began by the transition from groundwork preparation and being marginalized to not only having an organized institution based on norms and rules but also its members serve in both legislature and the cabinet, while simultaneously maintaining an armed militia. In this paper I will analyze what is particular about Hezbollah and what are the circumstances that made it possible for Hezbollah to become a local, regional and international player in the political arena. I will discuss the historical dynamics of the ‘Party of God’ emergence locally, regionally and internationally and its ideology. THE EMERGENCE OF HEZBOLLAH To begin with, the unique characteristics of Hezbollah’s emergence are influenced by numerous factors internally and regionally.
