This conference explores notions of disciplinarily and interdisciplinary in the human sciences. It represents a marvelous collage of specific instances of the study of social life worthy of the label ‘science’ as well as presentations which think in more general terms about the problem of method and the nature of interdisciplinary. The Social Sciences Conference was held in 2006 at the University of the Aegean in Rhodes, Greece, and in 2007 at the University of Granada, Spain, in 2008 at Monash University Centre, Prato, Italy, in 2009 at the University of Athens, Athens, Greece, in 2010 at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK , in 2011 at the University of New Orleans, New Orleans, USA, in 2012 at the Universidad Abat Oliba, Barcelona, Spain, and in 2013 at Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. We will hold the 2015 Social Sciences Conference in Split, Croatia at the University of Split. In addition to organizing the Social Sciences Conference, Common Ground publishes papers from the conference at www.TheSocialSciences.com/Publications/Journal. We do encourage all conference participants to submit a paper based on their conference presentation for peer review and possible publication in the collection of journals for this knowledge community. We also publish books at www.TheSocialSciences.com/Publications/Books in both print and electronic formats. We would like to invite conference participants to develop publishing proposals for original works, or for edited collections of papers drawn from the journal which address an identified theme. Finally, please join our online conversation by subscribing to our monthly email newsletter, and subscribe to our Facebook, RSS, or Twitter feeds at www.TheSocialSciences.com. Common Ground also organizes conferences and publishes journals in other areas of critical intellectual human concern, including diversity, museums, technology, learning and the arts, to name several (see www.CommonGroundPublishing.com). Our aim is to create new forms of knowledge community, where people meet in person and also remain connected virtually, making the most of the potentials for access using digital media. We are also committed to creating a more accessible, open and reliable peer review process. Thank you to everyone who has prepared for this conference. A personal thank you goes to our Common Ground colleagues who have put such a significant amount of work into this conference: Monica Hillison, Ian Nelk, Homer Stavely, Izabel Szary, Ana Quintana, and Jessica Wienhold-Brokish. We wish the best for this conference and hope it will provide you every opportunity for dialogue with colleagues from around the corner and around the world. We hope you will be able to join us at next year’s Social Sciences Conference 11-14 June 2015 in Split, Croatia. Yours Sincerely, Bill Cope Director, Common Ground Publishing Research Professor, Dept. of Educational Policy Organizational and Leadership University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA 2 2014 Social Sciences Conference ABOUT COMMON GROUND Our Mission Common Ground Publishing aims to enable all people to participate in creating collaborative knowledge and to share that knowledge with the greater world. Through our academic conferences, peer-reviewed journals and books, and innovative software, we build transformative knowledge communities and provide platforms for meaningful interactions across diverse media. [ Our Message Heritage knowledge systems are characterized by vertical separations—of discipline, professional association, institution, and country. Common Ground identifies some of the pivotal ideas and challenges of our time and builds knowledge communities that cut horizontally across legacy knowledge structures. Sustainability, diversity, learning, the future of the humanities, the nature of interdisciplinarity, the place of the arts in society, technology’s connections with knowledge, the changing role of the university—these are deeply important questions of our time which require interdisciplinary thinking, global conversations, and cross-institutional intellectual collaborations. Common Ground is a meeting place for these conversations, shared spaces in which differences can meet and safely connect—differences of perspective, experience, knowledge base, methodology, geographical or cultural origins, and institutional affiliation. We strive to create the places of intellectual interaction and imagination that our future deserves. Our Media Common Ground creates and supports knowledge communities through a number of mechanisms and media. Annual conferences are held around the world to connect the global (the international delegates) with the local (academics, practitioners, and community leaders from the host community). Conference sessions include as many ways of speaking as possible to encourage each and every participant to engage, interact,

Gregory, Chair Moon-Ho Jung Ileana Rodriguez Silva Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of History ii University of Washington Abstract Laboring for the Day: The Pacific Coast and the Casual Labor Economy, 1919-1933 Alexander James Morrow Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor James Gregory Department of History This dissertation explores the economic and cultural (re)definition of labor and laborers. It traces the growing reliance upon contingent work as the foundation for industrial capitalism along the Pacific Coast; the shaping of urban space according to the demands of workers and capital; the formation of a working class subject through the discourse and social practices of both laborers and intellectuals; and workers’ struggles to improve their circumstances in the face of coercive and onerous conditions. Woven together, these strands reveal the consequences of a regional economy built upon contingent and migratory forms of labor. This workforce was hardly new to the American West, but the Pacific Coast’s reliance upon contingent labor reached its apogee after World War I, drawing hundreds of thousands of young men through far flung circuits of migration that stretched across the Pacific and into Latin America, transforming its largest urban centers and working class demography in the process. The presence of this substantial workforce (itinerant, unattached, and racially heterogeneous) was out step with the expectations of the modern American worker (stable, married, and white), and became the warrant for social investigators, employers, the state, and other workers to sharpen the lines of solidarity and exclusion.

Excludes repeats, specials, movies, news, sports, programs with only one telecast, and Spanish language nets. Cable: Mon-Sun, 8-11P. Broadcast: Mon-Sat, 8-11P; Sun 7-11P. "<<" denotes below Nielsen minimum reporting standards based on P2+ Total U.S. Rating to the tenth (0.0). Important to Note: This list utilizes the TV Guide listing service to denote original telecasts (and exclude repeats and specials), and also line-items original series by the internal coding/titling provided to Nielsen by each network. Thus, if a network creates different "line items" to denote different seasons or different day/time periods of the same series within the calendar year, both entries are listed separately. The following provides examples of separate line items that we counted as one show: %(7 V%HLQJ0DU\-DQH%(,1*0$5<-$1(6DQG%(,1*0$5<-$1(6 1%& V7KH9RLFH92,&(DQG92,&(78( 1%& V7KH&DUPLFKDHO6KRZ&$50,&+$(/6+2:3DQG&$50,&+$(/6+2: Again, this is a function of how each network chooses to manage their schedule. Hence, we reference this as a list as opposed to a ranker. Based on our estimated manual count, the number of unique series are: 2015³1,415 primetime series (1,524 line items listed in the file). 2014³1,517 primetime series (1,729 line items). Though tried for first-degree murder, the jury found Drury guilty of manslaughter. Drury was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Closing statements were given by Att. David Thomas and Att. Robert McMahan on Friday. before presenting their final statements, both urged the jury to consider only the evidence and testimonies presented in court when coming to a decision. Att. Thomas told the jury, “Anger robs a man of his reason,” stating Drury that Drury had been angry with Jeff Garrison not only due to custody dis- putes between Garrison and Drury’s daughter, Misty Garrison, but also because Garrison had threatened Drury’s business as an unlicensed denturist. Thomas told the jury that Drury’s deliberate intent was shown by his actions leading up to the death of Jeff Garrison April 12, 2016 —driving from his den- tal lab in Blair to Altus to buy shotgun shells, arriving at Walmart at 5:59 p.m., tearing open the box and loading the .410 shotgun before arriving at the scene, and shooting Garrison by 6:15 p.m. that night when he called his wife to tell her he had shot Garrison.
