Magh Bihu falls in the local month of 'Magh' during mid-january. It is also called 'Bhogali Bihu' or 'Maghor Bihu' as it is celebrated with community feasts after the annual harvest takes place. Key Points: • People began the day by gathering at the temple and offered prayers, beat up the drums and walk around the bonfire. • The highlight of this festival is the food, which is made from the abundance of grains after the harvest. • The night before ‘Magh Bihu' is called 'Uruka' meaning the night of feasts. • The villagers make bamboo huts called 'Bhelghor' or community kitchen where they begin with the preparations for the festival. A large section of the Asamiya people supported the movement because it was embedded in the question of identity. The movement, in its first inception, was a protest movement against the government policy of giving political rights to alleged foreigners. But gradually it transformed with the emphasis being shifted on the issue of identity construction by drawing upon various ethnic stands and ultimately leading to ethnic disorder. The movement brought a distinctive political awareness amongst the Muslim community in general and the Muslims of East-Bengal origin in particular of Assam. Though the Movement at its initial phase was against all the illegal foreign nationals residing in Assam, yet gradually it seemed to be stood against the Muslims of East-Bengal origin and the Hindu Bengalis living in Assam. It propelled a deep polarization between the Asamiyas and the Muslims of East-Bengal origin. Keywords: Assam Movement, Communal Polarization, Identity, Muslims of East-Bengal Origin. -
Chapter- 3 Char Areas of Brahmaputra Valley 3.1
CHAPTER- 3 CHAR AREAS OF BRAHMAPUTRA VALLEY 3.1 Introduction In this Chapter we have tried to focus on Char areas of Brahmaputra Valley of Assam through four sections. The second section provides Char area development in the political history of Assam covering the question of developments before the formation of the Char development Authority and also Char Development Authority phase movement together with highlighting 73rd Amendment of the Constitution vis a vis Char areas under four sub-sections. The third section focuses on physical aspects, social demographic aspects and socio-economic aspects under three sub-sections. The fourth section is the concluding section. 3.2.1 Char Area Development in the Political lHistory of Assam As mentioned earlier, barring a very few almost all the 'Char' areas of Brahmaputra Valley are Muslim dominated. So the question of development of Char Areas is naturally linked with the people belonging to religious minority in the history of Assam. It is worthwhile to mention here that without apprehending the role of the Muslims in the civil society of Assam, it would be difficult to analyse the question of Char area development the history of Assam. M. Hussain (1993: 197) has rightly observed that the Muslims of Assam are not a single homogenous community; rather they are groups of several identifiable distinctive ones and Hussain categorized the Muslims of Assam into four groups: (i) Asamiya Muslims, (ii) Na-Asamiya Muslims, (iii) Muslims of the Barak Valley and (iv) North Indian Muslims living in Assam (Hussain: 1993). At the same time it is equally true that such kind of categorization in regard to the Muslims of Assam is not made by the Census Reports. -

However, it needs to be emphasised here that the problem of illegal immigration in Assam from across the border with Bangladesh is a serious political, economic and demographic issue. In fact, it is more about saving a community‟s cultural and civilisational pride, along with its religious identity. For centuries, Indians, in all parts of the country, fiercely resisted all attacks by forces alien to their history and culture. But, unfortunately, continued brutalities and exploitation by these alien forces led to a defensive mind-set among Indians. This hesitation to be proactive has infested the psyche so much that even monstrous political and socio-economic crises are continuously ignored! The crisis facing Assam is no longer a war of swords and weapons, like the barbaric attacks in the medieval times, but a demographic war of numbers. -
