Alumni Spotlight

Maria Ruiz, a graduate of Collegiate Leadership Experience 2017, volunteered with YLJ during the past year and has already begun volunteering with CLE 2018. She says that she has stayed involved with Leadership Jacksonville because she wants to continue improving our community, to share her experiences with future generations and also learn from class participants - past and present. She was most impacted by the poverty simulation, saying that it gave her a better understanding of how hard it can be to get back on your feet after falling. One action or problem takes on another and continues making a chain. The activity showed the importance of proper guidance and help that the community can provide to the families and also the importance of the desire of the families to improve. CLE gave Maria hope and inspired her to stay engaged in the community.

Alumni spotlight is brought to you by the Alumni Relations committee and features short interviews with Leadership Jacksonville alumni.

Notes of Sympathy

Our condolences to the family and friends of Jim Adams (LJ 2000) who died on April 21 following a lengthy illness. Jim was former CEO of Family Support Service of North Florida, where he was instrumental, with others like Justice David Gooding, in the creation of hundreds of forever families through such initiatives as the Heart Gallery. Jim served the citizens of Northeast Florida through his work in the political process and public policy, spending his time focused on his motto "help just one person each day." During his career Jim served as Legislative Aide to State Representative Janet Adkins, Congressional Aide to Congressmen Ander Crenshaw and Ted Yoho, chairman of the Nassau County Republican Party, and the Republican State Committeeman for Nassau County. Jim also served as a member of the Nassau County School Board for 16 years.

Our condolences to Chase Foy (LJ 2018) and his family upon the death of his father, Bill Foy, on May 2 in Quitman, GA.

Our condolences to Terri Florio (LJ 2004) and her family upon the death of her mother, Pat Byers Florio, on May 4.

Our condolences to the family and many LJ friends of Afesa Adams (LJ 1994) upon her death on May 6 in Salt Lake City, Utah where Afesa had moved to be with her family. Afesa retired from the University of North Florida where she was known as an inspirational educator and leader. She was active in community affairs and held leadership positions on the governing boards of many nonprofit organizations. In 2011 Afesa was named a Distinguished Alumna by her graduate school alma mater, the University of Utah. An outstanding video explaining Afesa's work that led to the award is on YouTube. A Memorial Service for Afesa will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018, 11 a.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Jacksonville, 7405 Arlington Expressway, Jacksonville, FL 32211.
