That was until the changeup that spun from Tomlin's fingertips betrayed him, sailing high and inside and striking Miller in the chest. The Chase Field crowd unleashed some boos, but this was not malicious on Tomlin's part. It was simply a misstep, and a costly one in Cleveland's7-3 loss to the D-backs on Friday night. Instead of inducing a sacrifice bunt, Tomlin gave Miller a base, and Arizona capitalized with a five-run inning that sent the Tribe to its first loss of 2017. "You obviously want to get an out when a guy's giving you an out," Tomlin said. "He's sacrificing himself to move the guy to second base, so it kind of changed the whole dynamic of that inning." Tomlin had already been teetering before his game-changing mistake. After cruising through the first three innings, Tomlin flinched in the fourth. A walk to slugger Paul Goldschmidt helped set up a two-run outburst, which was highlighted by a Yasmany Tomas double off the wall in center. The veteran catcher received his wish last week when he and the Braves agreed to a two-year, $5.3 million contract. The Braves officially announced the completion of the deal on Wednesday afternoon. Outfielder Dian Toscano was outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Flowers, who is now set to share the Braves' catching duties with his former White Sox teammate A.J. Pierzynski. "This turned out maybe even better than I had hoped," Flowers said. "Atlanta is home to me, and the [Braves] organization is somewhat home to me as well. When I was non-tendered, I was hoping the Braves would be interested because I knew I would love an opportunity to return." After being born and raised in suburban Atlanta, Flowers experienced the thrill of being selected by his hometown team in the 33rd round of the 2005 Draft. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound catcher steadily enhanced his stock during the three seasons he played in Atlanta's farm system. He was one of the key pieces the Braves used to acquire Javier Vazquez from the White Sox on Dec. 4, 2008. With the addition of Flowers, the Braves have gained an opportunity to lessen the workload placed on the 38-year-old Pierzynski, who logged 104 starts as Atlanta's catcher this year.

Find that hard to believe? Then the man who delivered both long balls will also be a shocker. With two swings of his bat, right fielder David DeJesus provided the winning margin in the A's 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians before 13,872 fans at Overstock.com Coliseum. A pesky contact hitter, DeJesus entered the night with just 61 homers in eight-plus big league seasons. He entered the night mired in a 55-game homerless streak dating back to last season, and he had never had a multihomer game. "Not even in Little League," DeJesus said. "I was a bunter back then." The A's snapped Cleveland's seven-game winning streak, and DeJesus' out-of-nowhere power display was needed on a very strange night for the home team. Oakland recorded just four hits, and through the first seven innings, DeJesus' homers accounted for the A's only base runners against Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin (4-1). The A's nearly became the third team since 1919 to win a nine-inning game without benefit of a single, double, triple or walk. They notched two singles in the eighth, when Coco Crisp's run-scoring hit up the middle made it 3-1. Right-hander Trevor Cahill made the bare-bones offense stand, allowing just one run over seven innings.
