  • An Interview with Ron Bolton Mbe
AN INTERVIEW WITH RON BOLTON MBE Question: Ron, you have just stepped down from the Management Committee of N&DTTA after over 50 years of service is that a sad occasion for you? Answer: No not really. I am now 89 years old and things have changed such a lot since I started playing. Whilst experience comes with age there is always a time to step aside for younger and more active people to play their part. Question: So what was it like when you first picked up a bat? Answer: It was at work actually, and I remember it well – 4th August 1939. I was 17 and just finishing my first day at work as a Civil Servant with the Ministry of Labour. The people in the office in Nottingham asked me if I was interested in a game of table tennis before going home. I just went along. There was not a lot else to do in those days because the War was on. We didn’t have TV or computers or mobile phones – just the radio and newspapers. Question: Did you come from a sporting family? Answer: No. Not really. I was really keen on cricket. My Headmaster at West Bridgford Grammar School was against my joining the Civil Service so if I had followed his advice everything could have changed. Jean my wife played tennis and badminton and I have a grandson who represents England at under-15 fencing, but that obviously came later. Question: What was it like playing in those days? Answer: Well, we all had hard bats – sponge had not been invented.

  • 03 Mtta Newsletter March 2018
ACROSS THE NET Melton Table Tennis March 2018 Edition 43 2018 UNDERWAY, OZ OPEN MOVES, COMM GAMES TEAM, & GRABBING ON TIGHT In this edition, we discuss how good we are getting, prepare for a major tournament just down the road, announce the players for our Commonwealth Games teams, and work out the best way to hold it and what to do with it. MTTA CLOSE TO CAPACITY It was just fantastic to walk into the playing hall on the first night of the new season and see so many new faces. Every team on the newly expanded C Grade has a player who is new to the club, as well new players in other grades and the return of some who have been absent for some time. The expanded numbers has caused us to go with a different format for both A Grade and C Grade, with an expanded A Grade being spilt into A1 and A2, and eight equal C Grade teams being split into 2 divisions. It remains to be seen how successful these changes will be, but it will be seriously analysed before the Winter season to make sure we have the best plans in place for the rest of the year. And wasn’t it pleasing to see the return of Craig Archman. Craig’s recovery from a stroke has been a long one, but I’m sure that being back at the table and amongst friends will give him a real boost. The newcomers will very soon settle in to our routine, and this short season will give the selection committee a better understand of abilities in preparation for the longer seasons later in the year.

  • Eight Decades, Ready for Number Nine
Eight decades, ready for number nine By Ian Marshall (Editor – Swaythling Club Magazine, International Table Tennis Federation). A total of eight decades completed, a career starting in the 1940s, now in 2020 New Zealand’s Alan Tomlinson commences his ninth decade of play! He progressed to international status in an era that witnessed television becoming the norm in the household, the plastic bottle appearing; rock and roll transforming the music scene, the first passenger jets entering service. Recovering from the effects of World War Two, the 1950s was an era of immense change. Arguably, in the sport of table tennis, the greatest of changes; it was an age that witnessed the most significant impacts on the history of the sport, a period that formulated the modern day game. At the start of the decade, Europe dominated the international scene, by the end of the period Japan and then China had world titles in their lockers. Moreover, the racket had changed from a blade covered with layer of pimpled rubber to the principle of the modern day racket that added a layer of sponge. The so-called sandwich bat was born. Starting to play in those days meant adapting quickly; especially adjusting techniques, experimenting with new materials was rampant as the sport moved into the unknown. Born on Tuesday 27th March 1934 in Auckland in the North Island, the city in which he has always lived, either in St Mary's Bay or Herne Bay; Alan Tomlinson is a family man. He is married to Maureen, has a married daughter Larissa Park and a son, James; his grandchildren are Emily and Isabella Park.
