A great leader both in physical and in psychic science In token of respect This work is dedicated PREFACE This work has grown from small disconnected chapters into a narrative which covers in a way the whole history of the Spiritualistic movement. This genesis needs some little explanation. I had written certain studies with no particular ulterior object save to gain myself, and to pass on to others, a clear view of what seemed to me to be important episodes in the modern spiritual development of the human race. These included the chapters on Swedenborg, on Irving, on A. J. Davis, on the Hydesville incident, on the history of the Fox sisters, on the Eddys and on the life of D. D. Home. These were all done before it was suggested to my mind that I had already gone some distance in doing a fuller history of the Spiritualistic movement than had hitherto seen the light - a history which would have the advantage of being written from the inside and with intimate personal knowledge of those factors which are characteristic of this modern development. It is indeed curious that this movement, which many of us regard as the most important in the history of the world since the Christ episode, has never had a historian from those who were within it, and who had large personal experience of its development. -

It seemed to me a simple and sensible way of saying that the reader of these pages must not look for many jokes, certainly not merely for jokes, because these are controversial essays, covering all subjects on which a controversialist is challenged, and not particular subjects chosen as they are chosen by an essayist. It is an awful revelation of the world of unreason into which we have wandered, that people more practical than I are convinced that if I say that this is apart from joking, everyone will think it is a joke. -

Magic in the Moonlight Presentation from Wikipedia by Peter Anderson Magic in the Moonlight is a 2014 American romantic comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen. The film stars Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Hamish Linklater, Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver, Erica Leerhsen, Eileen Atkins, and Simon McBurney. Set in the 1920s on the French Riviera, the film was released on July 25, 2014, by Sony Pictures Classics. Magic in the Moonlight received a generally mixed reception. Critics praised the performances of Firth and Stone, but criticized the clichéd scriptwriting. Critical response Magic in the Moonlight has received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 50%, based on 151 reviews, with an average rating of 5.8/10. The site's consensus states: "While far from a failure, Magic in the Moonlight is too slight to stand with Woody Allen's finest work." Review aggregator Metacritic assigns the film a score of 54 out of 100, based on 40 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Rex Reed, writing for The New York Observer , gave the film a largely positive review, calling it "a masterstroke of enchantment" and praising Colin Firth's acting. Jordan Hoffman of Film.com also enjoyed the film, stating, "This picture isn’t as showy or obvious as one of his (many) masterpieces, but it is quite good and deserves your time and respect." In The New Yorker , David Denby agreed that Colin Firth "carries [the film] through." (to carry sth through: sostenere e salvare) . He added that one scene is reminiscent of To Catch a Thief . -

The chief manifestations that occurred with her were the movement of objects without contact, the levitation of a table and other objects, the levitation of the medium, the appearance of materialized hands and faces, lights, and the playing of musical instruments without human contact. All these phenomena took place, as we have seen, at a much earlier date with the medium D. D. Home, but when Sir William Crookes invited his scientific brethren to come and examine them they declined. Now for the first time these strange facts were the subject of prolonged investigation by men of European reputation. Needless to say, these experimenters were at first sceptical in the highest degree, and so-called ‘tests’ (those often silly precautions which may defeat the very object aimed at) were the order of the day. No medium in the whole world has been more rigidly tested than this one, and since she was able to convince the vast majority of her sitters, it is clear that her mediumship was of no ordinary type. -

We picture the ama- teur sleuth, vain, aloof, tall, lithe, with a fondness for pipes, violins, drugs, capes, and deerstalker hats. We remember tales of the expert detective who solves crimes through investigation, observation, deduction, and logical interpretation of evidence. But who was his creator, this man called Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? When did he live? What were his interests? How did he become a ‘Sir’? Does his work reflect a literary period? Was he responsible for defining the genre of detective fiction? What is the quality of his writing? What kind of a Victorian was he? How was he regarded by his contemporaries? He came from Roman Africa, and he was going to make a fortune by teaching rhetoric in Rome. His name Augustinus; and he little dreamed that until about the year 1950 A.D., or thereabouts, he would be known all over the world, and greatly honored, under the quaint name of St. Augustine. In Life and Morals in Greece and Rome (Little Blue Book No.1078) we may see something of the superb city and wonderful life which Augustine would admire. Here I am going to tell one experience which he described in later years. He was not yet a Christian: neither was Rome, for he tells us that even then, three centuries and a half after the death of Christ, seventy years after the Emperors had begun to make an acceptance of Christianity "the pathway of ambition," still "nearly the whole nobility of Rome"-which means the whole of its educated men-were pagans. Imperial gold had built a church or two, but the great city of a million people scorned the new religion. -

These public productions were as much an experiment in audience and performer psychology as they were an exotic entertainment. Written, produced and directed by leading cast member, Aleister Crowley, The Rites of Eleusis attempted to present a contemporary interpretation of an ancient myth in order to reignite the role and importance of mysticism in modern society. Through exposing the audience to a variety of sensory stimuli such as incense, rhythmic music, dance, and poetry, it attempted to create within the audience itself an altered state of consciousness which would make them co-celebrants within the performance/ritual. As Crowley stated in the original broadsheet advertisements for the productions, the Rites were intended “to illustrate the magical methods followed by a mystical society which seeks for illumination by ecstasy.” But Crowley intended much more: he hoped the audience would not merely view an “illustration,” but experience an -

La mort laïque en Angleterre s’est fait une place viable dans la société de la fin du XIXe siècle. Les libres penseurs avaient la possibilité d’échapper aux services funéraires théistes, mais il n’existait aucune ‘ terre promise’ pour les approches non religieuses envers la mort au cours du XXe siècle. Le christianisme ainsi que les approches non-rationnelless à l’égard de la mort adaptèrent rapidement leur message sur la mort et l’au-delà et créèrent un ‘ marché du confort’ où ils espéraient attirer des adhérents grâce à de nouvelles offres théologiques et philosophiques. Les libres penseurs anglais ont dû s’adapter à ce nouveau monde. À la fin du XXe siècle ils ont saisi eux mêmes l’essence de ce que le ‘ marché du confort’ pouvait apporter. Ainsi faisant, le message purement rationnel dans l’organisation des funérailles laïques devient moins important que la satisfaction et le confort qui peuvent être offerts aux individus. -

David Nash, Oxford Brookes University Abstract Secularist death in Britain had carved itself a viable place in society by the end of the nineteenth century. Whilst it had made escaping theistic services and burial possible for its own adherents it did not move forward into a ‘promised land’ of widely practiced secular and secularist approaches to death. Christianity and other non-rational approaches to death rapidly remade their messages about death and the hereafter and created a ‘marketplace of comfort’ where they hoped to attract adherents with new types of theological and philosophical offering. Secularists had to adapt to this new world and by the end of the 20th century had themselves grasped the essence of what the ‘marketplace of comfort’ could provide. In doing so the actively rational message in secular funeral provision began to be less important than the satisfactory and flexible forms of comfort it could offer to individuals. Despite early struggles in the first two thirds of the 19th century, secularists in Victorian Britain could argue that they had achieved many of the important rights of citizenship associated with death and dying by the very end of that same century. This apparent triumph during this era has similarities with the chronology of struggle for cultural and legal recognition of secularist death in countries like France and Belgium. The final third of the nineteenth century saw the religious stranglehold on the control of death and burial broken so that atheists, agnostics and deists could reasonably contemplate the ability to plan their own interment, devoid of clerical interference. -

LIBRARY PREFACE On March 11 of this year Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did me the honour of debating the claims of Spiritualism with me before a vast and distinguished audience at the Queen's Hall, London. My opponent had insisted that I should open the debate ; and, when it was pointed out that the critic usually follows the exponent, he had indicated that I had ample material to criticize in the statement of the case for Spiritualism in his two published works. How conscientiously I addressed myself to that task, and with what result, must be left to the reader of the published debate. Suffice it to say that my distinguished opponent showed a remarkable disinclination to linger over his own books, and wished to " broaden the issue." Since the bulk of the time allotted to me in the debate was then already spent, it was not possible to discuss satisfactorily the new evidences adduced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and not recorded in his books. I hasten to repair the defect in this critical examination of every variety of Spiritualistic phenomena. My book has a serious aim. The pen of even the dullest author—and I trust I do not fall into that low category of delinquents—must grow lively or sarcastic at times in the course of such a study as this.
