Protecting and enhancing the Environment for Future generations A Forgotten Landscape Report from the South Gloucestershire Environment Forum Wednesday 10th July 2013 Welcome Councillor Dave Hockey welcomed everyone to the meeting, including many new members, and introduced the theme for the evening. Biodiversity Update Sally Pattison Sally gave a short and inspiring update on the progress of the biodiversity action plan and how it ties into the Forgotten Landscape project. Highlights included the high numbers of great crested and smooth newts in Bradley Stoke, the success of long grass management and installation of wildflower meadows, bee friendly planting and bee hives. Presentation Miriam Woolnough, Project Officer, ‘A Forgotten Landscape’ Miriam gave a presentation to introduce the project. A Forgotten Landscape is funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund and is a landscape partnership scheme located in the floodplain of the River Severn. The project focuses on all aspects of heritage, from the significant water vole population in Avonmouth to the over wintering groups of wildfowl, the largest tidal range in Europe as well as history, crafts and landscape of the area. It aims to improve habitat for wildlife, improve public access and interpretation and create volunteering and training opportunities. The scheme is currently in the development stage, and individual projects are being worked up, along with community consultation. This will inform the second stage bid to the Heritage Lottery for the full funding for the three and a half year delivery stage. Workshops Cllr Dave Hockey introduced Peter Seccombe and Sarah Douglas from Red Kite Environment who are contracted as part of the project to assist with developing the access, interpretation and learning plan. They then introduced the workshops designed to gather forum members input to the project. The workshops comprised four questions, a compilation of the responses from the four tables is represented below beneath each of the questions. 1. What are the seven wonders of the Lower Severn Vale Levels: • Estuary Habitat • Saxon era church at Oldbury 1 Protecting and enhancing the Environment for Future generations • Panoramic Views, and access to them via the Severn Way • The bridges and tunnels as feats of engineering and landmarks • Wind turbines at Avonmouth • The Severn Bore • Estuary Trades such as elver fishing, cider making and ferries and boating industry • Industrial heritage • Orchards • Aust Cliffs • The Feeling of exposure and wide skies • The history and quirky stories of the area • The old ferry terminal at Aust • Inter-tidal zone • The network of drainage rhines • The English Stones • The historical village of Severn Beach • Oldbury Power Station and the energy generation potential of the area • Salmon fishing • Villages and pubs 2. What five stories would you tell to visitors to the area: • Farmhouse cider making and putcher fishing histories • Migration of species, including fish, fowl and human both across the estuary and further • The Severn crossing, both under and over the sea • The development of the landscape through history • Britannia in the mud • The story of St Arilda • The beaching of the whale at Whale wharf • The river traffic and trade • St Augustine and Bob Dylan on the Aust Ferry • The 1607 tidal wave • Archaeology including Roman and Saxon remains and dinosaur fossils. • The sex life of glow worms • Stories from Whale Wharf, brick cottages and brickworks • The story of Oldbury Power Station • The story of the impact of railways on the area 3. What three projects would you like to see developed: • New walks and trails available either as guided walks or downloadable leaflets, covering wildlife, history, geology/archaeology, industry and natural environment. These should be available as horse rides, bike rides, walks or sensory areas, and include some designed for disabled access. 2 Protecting and enhancing the Environment for Future generations • Local art and educational workshops, with cross-generation input • Training courses covering heritage skills • Public art, either storytelling or sculpture trails • Coherent access to sites and to the project itself • A project which includes a relationship between the project area and the surrounding area • A project which links with the development areas and enterprise zones • A better route down Aust cliff • A project to revitalise the dairy farms • Enhancement of rhines and scrapes 4. What one word characterises the lower Severn Vale Levels: Participants were invited to call out words resonant with their experience of the area. Conclusion Peter, Sarah and Cllr Dave Hockey thanked the attendees for a very useful session. The outputs of the workshops will be worked into the final plan for submission in January 2014.
