Prepare yourself for aN exclusive and fascinating journey through the criminal mind! What Goes Through the Mind of a Death Row Inmate? By Dr. Bill Kimberlin Death is inevitable. There is no escaping it. We are all going to die at some point; some will just die sooner than others. Death is one of those few “constants” that we all have to deal with throughout our life. Louise Bundy wipes away a tear as she tells her son Ted: ‘You will always be my precious son.’ He was executed minutes later. Betty Lou Jensen, just sixteen years old, headed out for her first date. She was with David Arthur Faraday, a seventeen-year-old, who was a top student and a varsity wrestler. They ended up parked just off Lake Herman Road, a lovers’ lane in Vallejo, California. fig. 4.1 Betty Lou Jensen fig. 4.2 David Arthur Faraday © Bettmann / Getty Images © Bettmann / Getty Images Sometime between 11:10 and 11:15 p.m., they were attacked. The killer put his gun to the boy’s head and pulled the trigger, killing him while he was still in the car. Betty exited the vehicle, but the killer shot her in the back five times as she tried to run away. Both teens died. Police later found ten expended .22 casings. It is related to the term physicotheology, the difference between them being that the aim of physicotheology is to derive theology from physics, whereas that of theophysics is to derive physics from theology. Usage Paul Richard Blum (2002) uses the term in a critique of physicotheology, i.e. the view that arguments for the existence of God can be derived from the existence of the physical world (e.g. the "argument from design"). Theophysics would be the opposite approach, i.e. an approach to the material world informed -
International Crime, Media & Popular Culture Studies Conference
FIRST ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CRIME, MEDIA & POPULAR CULTURE STUDIES CONFERENCE October 5-7, 2009 Indiana State University Terre Haute, Indiana Sponsored by the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice Indiana State University 1 Table of Contents Welcome 3 Conference Maps 4-5 Featured Speaker Bios 6-9 Monday 10-23 October 5th, 2009 Tuesday 24-40 October 6th, 2009 Wednesday 41-56 October 7th, 2009 A Special Thank You 57 2 Dear Conference Attendees Welcome to the First Annual International Crime, Media & Popular Culture Studies Conference. While the ICMPCS Conference has a Criminology and Criminal Justice discipline core, the conference was established to encourage an international cross-disciplinary exchange between both academic scholars and practitioners who are engaged in research, teaching and practices associated with crime, media and popular culture. The conference serves as a forum for the dissemination of knowledge associated with these areas of study in an effort to engender further growth of the discipline among students, academicians and practitioners. This year‘s conference clearly demonstrates both the international and cross disciplinary appeal of this area of study in that a number of different disciplines are represented among scholars from over 10 countries. I would encourage each of you to utilize the conference to broaden the scope of your individual research agendas and methodological boundaries by exploring what scholars in other fields are doing in this area of study. Given the increased role of media and popular culture in our understanding of crime, deviance and the justice system in general, it is my hope that attendees begin to look at how this area of study plays a role not only in our intellectual growth but also in how it can influence policy in the future. -
