In such a situation, you may realize something as “Japanese-like” or “Finnish-like” in designs as you hold the product in your hand. But why do you think like that? The aim of this study is to clarify the factors that characterize these ideas, in terms of furniture design, with a focus on industrial development and the cultural contexts of Japan and Finland. The study is twofold, with a theoretical framework and an empirical framework. The theoretical analysis works with cultural industrial context and also argues that the transition of industrial development significantly affects national product design orientation and helps characterize products. The empirical analysis works with questionnaires concerning product image. The results conceptualize cultural references in both Japanese and Finnish furniture design. However, the results also present the realistic difficulty of recognizing products. The paper concludes by arguing that factors affecting customer’s decision making are also influenced by not only product design but the socio-culture they belong to. Therefore, measuring product image is not the only way to define national product identity, and the image is formed by both customers and product design factors. -

The religion and the environment of this region have had a central role in the evolution of the domestic spaces and in the choice of materials used. The eastern architects have kept some canons of construction that modern designers still use. These models have been source of inspiration of the greatest minds of the architectural landscape of the 20th century. The following analysis tries to understand how such cultural bases have defined construction choices, carefully describing all the spaces that characterize the domestic environment. The Japanese culture concerning daily life at home is very different from ours in the west; there is a different collocation of the spiritual value assigned to some rooms in the hierarchy of project prioritization: within the eastern mindset one should guarantee the harmony of spaces that are able to satisfy the spiritual needs of everyone that lives in that house. The Japanese house is a new world: every space is evolving thanks to its versatility. Lights and shadows coexist as they mingle with nature, another factor in understanding the ideology of Japanese architects. In the following research, besides a detailed description of the central elements, incorporates where necessary a comparison with the western world of thought. All the influences will be analysed, with a particular view to the architectural features that have influenced the Modern Movement. -

Web Japan http://web-japan.org/ ARCHITECTURE A harmonious coexistence of tradition and innovation The Development of Japanese Architecture Historically, architecture in Japan was influenced by Chinese architecture, although the differences between the two are many. Whereas the exposed wood in Chinese buildings is painted, in Japanese buildings it traditionally has not been. Also, Chinese architecture was based on a lifestyle that included the use of chairs, while in Japan people customarily sat on the floor (a custom that began to change in the Meiji period [1868–1912]). Architecture in Japan has also been influenced by the climate. Summers in most of Japan are long, hot, and humid, a fact that is clearly reflected in the way homes are built. The traditional house is raised somewhat so that the air can move around and beneath it. Wood was the material of choice because it is cool in summer, warm in winter, and more flexible when subjected to earthquakes. In the Asuka period (593–710), Buddhism was introduced into Japan from China, and Buddhist temples were built in the continental East pagoda of Yakushiji temple (Nara Pref.) manner. The Kaidan Dansu, a Stairway in Historical Shadow Final Report
Japan Foundation David Jackson Fellowship Project Title: The kaidan dansu, a stairway in historical shadow Final report The cabinetry of Japan known as tansu has within its multiplicity of designs something truly unique: a hybrid that is both staircase and cupboard. It is invariably known as the hakodan, hako kaidan, also the kaidan-dansu, literally box stair and stair chest or step-chest. Its history has been obscured by myth and anecdote as no other tansu that I know of, both its origins and uses. In September of 2007 I was awarded a Japan Foundation grant to research hako kaidan. The following essay is the product of this research. My goals included finding texts on tansu which I had been unable to access in the United States. Another was to see hako kaidan in their original architectural context and finally to find out who made these cabinets and how they began. My methodology included book searches at the National Diet Library, traveling to various cities and visiting museums and historical districts. I also spoke with architects and when possible craftsmen, and antique dealers. Many people helped along the way and I thank them at the end of this essay, but I remind the reader any mistakes or omissions are wholly my own. History Wooden stairs of various designs have been in Japan for over a thousand years. The earliest forms dating to the Yayoi period (300BC-300AD) were cut from tree trunks, notched as it were and inclined for use to reach raised floor granaries. The Geku (outer) Shinto shrine complex at Ise still exhibits such forms as testament to their beginnings1. -
