Abstract South America is diverse in climatic and thus vegetational zonation, and even the uniformly looking tropical rain forests are a mosaic of different habitats depending on the soils, the regional climate and also the geological history. An important part of the nutrient webs of the rain forests is formed by the terrestrial Isopoda, or Oniscidea, the only truly terrestrial taxon within the Crustacea. They are important, because they participate in soil formation by breaking up leaf litter when foraging on the fungi and bacteria growing on them. After a century of research on this interesting taxon, a revision of the terrestrial isopod taxa from South America and some of the Antillean Islands, which are traditionally placed in the family Philosciidae, was performed in the last years to establish monophyletic genera. Within this study, the phylogenetic relationships of these genera are elucidated in the light of phylogenetic systematics. Several new taxa are recognized, which are partially neotropical, partially also found on other continents, particularly the old Gondwanian fragments. The monophyla are checked for their distributional patterns which are compared with those patterns from other taxa from South America and some correspondence was found. The distributional patterns are analysed with respect to the evolution of the Oniscidea and also with respect to the geological history of their habitats. -

Die Erforschung der Landisopoden des heutigen Österreichs hat erst in den vergangenen 30 bis 40 Jahren größere Fortschritte gemacht. Zwar gibt es immer noch da und dort Landstriche des Reiches, deren Asselfauna heute noch unbekannt ist. Auch ist, nach den Erfahrungen der letzten Jahre, in den Ostalpen noch weiterhin mit der Möglichkeit des Auffindens von neuen oder zwar bekannten, aber bisher auf österreichischem Gebiete noch nicht beobachteten Arten zu rechnen. Trotzdem sind unsere Kenntnisse schon so weit vorgeschritten, um aus der Verbreitung der österreichischen Landasseln, von denen jetzt insgesamt 58 Arten und Unterarten bekannt sind, einige bemerkenswerte Feststellungen tiergeographischer Art machen zu können, die sich kaum noch wesentlich ändern werden, selbst wenn noch weitere Arten und Fundorte hinzutreten sollten. Dabei wird auch angestrebt, das Wichtigste über die mit den Nachbarländern bestehenden Beziehungen, soweit sie Landisopoden betreffen, herauszuarbeiten. Aus den namentlich von Holdhaus (1932) und von Heberdey (1933) durchgeführten Untersuchungen geht hervor, daß die Eiszeit des Quartärs mit der wiederholt erfolgten, über die Alpen weit sich erstreckenden Ver- gletscherung von einem bedeutenden Einfluß auf die präglaziale (und inter- glaziale) Alpenfauna gewesen ist. -

Among the species captured, distribution; community some represented rare stenoecous Carpathian endemics, namely dynamics; the Western the isopod Trichoniscus carpaticus, and diplopods Julus curvicornis Carpathians and Leptoiulus mariae. Others were subterranean forms, partly adapted to hypogean conditions: the isopod Mesoniscus graniger, and diplopods Mecogonopodium carpathicum and Trachysphaera costata. The annual activity in the vast majority of the species ceased completely in winter, and was gradually relaunched in spring. In evaluating the age structure of two predominant diplo- pods Polydesmus denticulatus and Mecogonopodium carpathicum, both widespread across the depth gradient, a vertical segregation of early post-embryonic stages was found. Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, den Populationskomplex der hawai’ischen Höhlenzikade Oliarus polyphemus als Modellsystem für das Stu- dium schneller Artenbildungsprozesse zu erschließen. Dazu wurde ein theoretischer Rahmen aus Konzepten und daraus abgeleiteten Hypothesen zur Interpretation be- kannter Fakten und Erhebung neuer Daten entwickelt. Im Laufe der Studie wurde zur Erfassung geografischer Muster ein GIS (Geographical Information System) erstellt, das durch Einbeziehung der historischen Geologie eine präzise zeitliche Einordnung von Prozessen der Habitatsukzession erlaubt. Die Muster der biologi- schen Differenzierung der Populationen wurden durch morphometrische, etho- metrische (bioakustische) und molekulargenetische Methoden erfasst. -

A total of 8 species of woodlice were found. The number of collected species ranged from 1 (Dolina Chuczka, Mosty Kalińskie, Klimonty) to 5 (Łosiowe Błota). The most common species in the all studied reserves was Trachelipus rathkii. Key words: woodlouse fauna, nature reserves, Poland, Isopoda, species INTRODUCTION Woodlice are key organisms for nutrient cycling in many terrestrial ecosystems; how- ever, knowledge on this invertebrate group is limited as for other soil fauna taxa. By 2004, the world’s woodlouse fauna (Isopoda, Oniscidea) included 3637 valid species (Schmalfuss 2003). The fauna of terrestrial isopods in Europe has been active studied since the beginning of the XX century and is now well studied (Jeff ery et al. 2010). In Poland 37 isopod species inhabiting terrestrial habitats have been recorded so far, including 12 in Mazovia and 16 in Pomerania (Jędryczkowski 1979, 1981, Razowski 1997, Piksa and Farkas 2007, Astrouski and Aleksandrowicz 2018). -

IN MEMORY OF EMIL G. RACOVITZA (1868–1947) – HIS IDEAS REVERBERATE IN OUR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IONEL G. TABACARU*, DAN L. DANIELOPOL** AND ILINCA JUVARA-BALŞ*** Abstract. The ideas of E. G. Racovitza which led to the development of biospelaeology (biospeology, is the term used by Racovitza and adopted here) are reviewed. We emphasize the important research programme named Biospeologica which allowed to implement practical investigations on the subterranean animals due to enthusiastic cooperative work of many scientists. It leads to the exploration of many caves and other hypogean habitats. It is stressed out that the aim of Racovitza’s efforts was to stimulate scientists to contribute with their research to the development of an encyclopedic view of the “Natural History of the Subterranean Domain”. Examples from our own research reflect such ideas. We adopted Racovitza’s views on the phylogenetic systematics, on the way to identify the relict aspect displayed by many subterranean animal groups. Also it is pointed out the importance of Racovitza’s ideas for reconstruction of the dynamic dispersion of homogeneous phylogenetic animal lineages in time and space. Such ideas help us to develop biogeographic scenarios which are important for understanding earth’s history. It is confirmed this way that the ambitious programme of Racovitza, became during the time a real research tradition that merits being pursued by young naturalists interested in solving exciting problems related to the origin and evolution of the subterranean domain and its ecosystems.
