At the Ordinary Session of Cardinals and Bishops of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, held on January 9, 2018, the miracle attributed to the intercession of Mother Clelia Merloni was recognized with a unanimous affirmative vote. Pope Francis signed the Decree of a Miracle on January 26, 2018. All that remains is to celebrate a Mass of Beatification in Rome sometime later this year! We invite all of you to join us in thanking the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin Mary for the special grace they have given us in obtaining the beatification of Mother Clelia. The Miracle attributed to the Intercession of Mother Clelia Merloni On March 14, 1951, a Brazilian doctor named Pedro Ângelo de Oliveira Filho was suddenly stricken by an ascending progressive paralysis known as Landry’s paralysis, or Guillain-Barré syndrome. Within a few weeks the paralysis spread, resulting in acute respiratory difficulty. When the paralysis finally reached his throat, the doctors discontinued limited medical options for treatment available at that time. On March 20, he was having great difficulty breathing and was barely able to swallow his own saliva, and doctors informed the family that he would not likely survive the night. The patient’s wife sought out Sr. Adelina Alves Barbos, who immediately began praying with the family, asking Mother Clelia to intercede for a cure.

She was drawn to the order’s charism by observing that the sisters were “women of the heart, that their way of loving just imbued everything that they did.” The sense of a child’s belonging in a classroom and school is affirmed by being taught “from the heart,” Sister Kathryn said. Whatever subject is be- ing discussed “can touch their heart and can make a difference in their life. And so for me, teaching these students is also like, in some ways, teaching their parents,” teaching the students’ future children, “teaching their grandchildren.” And that could include her no-non- Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Blessed sense example of gently reprimanding a mischievous student who playfully soared a paper airplane through the By Beatification of Foundress classroom, as one youngster did when CNY visited Sister Kathryn’s fifth- By CHRISTIE L.

The call to be better each every day leads us on the search for holiness because each and every person is personally touched by the gift of God to make progress along this path of love. It was a fun and faith-filled way for the Catholic youths and young adults to honor God and conclude the 31st biennial national conference. Bishop Christopher J. Coyne, apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and host of the conference, asked the teenagers, collegians and adults attending the closing Mass to text, e-mail or tweet the words “Called to Glory,” the conference theme, to family members and friends throughout the U.S. at the conclusion of the vibrant liturgy. Murmurs began to spread through the quiet football stadium when Bishop Coyne surprised the conference participants by asking them to turn on their cell phones at the end of Mass. “For over two hours now, we have turned this space into a holy place where holy people have listened to holy words and done holy things and received holy gifts,” Bishop Coyne said.
