Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) “The word ‘catechesis’ comes from Greek and means ‘to resound’ or ‘to echo.’ The ‘sound’ to which we seek to give voice in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has two fundamental notes: kerygma, which is the proclamation of the Christian message, and the transmission of what God makes known to us of himself; and parenesis, or moral exhortation, which indicates the appropriate response to what God has made known to us.” (Sofia Cavalletti, The Source of the Moral Life, 1999 Journal The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd) “To teach morality, the catechist must be convinced that at its roots is love, and then proceed from that principle. Morality emerges from love. We must never wander far from this source, not even when we teach explicitly the Law, which is the Word of God, which shows us the way we must follow to reach God. The entire Law has been summarized by in the two commandments of love, and He has made love the badge of allegiance. ‘One cannot obey more than one loves,’ wrote the Prior of the Little Brothers of Jesus.” Sofia Cavalletti, Teaching Doctrine and Liturgy

Discussions rest with the 6 - 12 year old children relating the moral life through parables and the maxims. The maxims offer us short summaries that remind us how to continue to live the “greatest” law: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) Celebrate the joy we find in each other in glorifying God.

The Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel: ~Luke 6:27-38~ REFLECTION: This wonderful homily of Jesus calls all who follow him to a radical love of all people. If we love in this way, we’ll be true children of God the Father, who loves without measure. Christ and the Church have always explained that the Christian’s life should be an imitation of Jesus. By imitating God’s Son, Jesus, we become better children of God. The Joy of the Gospel on Campus Small groups can represent a dynamic tool for student evangelization. Across many campuses the most dynamic efforts to enliven a student church often involve some sort of small group (i.e. Catholic Student Association). One of the obvious advantages to small faith groups is that they do not necessarily require large buildings, big budgets, or full-time staff to be successful. Organized and coordinated effectively, small groups can be initiated in colleges and universities without a campus parish or full-time pastoral team. But as Evangelii Gaudium makes clear, it is not enough to have just any type of structure to serve the needs of students. No church structure, as Francis writes, can be truly effective unless it is marked by “new life and an authentic evangelical spirit” (no. 26). In other words, effective student ministry, in all its forms, must be mission oriented. Four characteristics of effective Catholic Student organizing are Empowering, Ecclesial, Encompassing and Engaging. First, effective student organizing and evangelization need to involve students as active agents and not simply as passive recipients. At the close of the 2012 Synod on The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith, the bishops make a rather obvious point that very often gets lost: “The youth are not only the future but also the present (and gift) in the Church. They are not only the recipients but also agents of evangelization, especially with their peers.” In Empowered by the Spirit: Campus Ministry Faces the Future, the bishops speak to the responsibility of students as baptized members of the people of God to minister to their peers. Through baptism and God’s special gifts they are empowered to be fully adult Christians and participants in ministry. In other words, the real subjects of any student-targeted ministry must be the students themselves, not the chaplains and ministers who play important roles in accompanying them. Since taking office has repeatedly emphasized the agency of young adults in the church. Students and other young adult Catholics must go beyond being mere “spectators” to becoming “real actors.” They must be encouraged and supported to become active agents of evangelization. Student empowerment and leadership may be inhibited by time and financial pressures facing students, particularly those who live at home, who have children, or who must work to support their studies. Not all students can afford the time necessary to lead groups or pay for the costs of being involved. Here, campus ministers can play an invaluable role in serving students who may face economic pressures. Second, evangelization with students must also be ecclesial; that is, it must be connected to the universal community of believers. In speaking about the power of small Christian communities in Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis makes this point clearly. After praising their work, he warns them “not to lose contact with the rich reality of the local parish and to participate readily in the overall pastoral activity of the particular Church.” In other words, small groups need to be connected to the church beyond themselves to “prevent them from concentrating only on part of the Gospel or the Church, or becoming nomads without roots” (no. 29). Being ecclesial also means being sacramental. To be Catholic, small group activities must relate to the church’s sacramental life, especially the Eucharist, which, as Lumen Gentium points out, is the “source and summit of the Christian life” (no. 11). Encompassing and Engaging will be discussed next week. Excerpt from God’s Quad, Small Faith Communities on Campus and Beyond
