Bluetongue is characterized by vascular injury with hemorrhage, tissue infarction and widespread edema, lesions that are consistent with those of the so-called viral hemorrhagic fevers. To further investigate the pathogenesis of vascular injury in bluetongue, we utilized an electrical impedance assay and immunofluorescence staining to compare the effects of BTV infection on cultured bovine endothelial cells (bPAEC) with those of inducers of cell death (Triton X-100) and interendothelial gap formation (tissue necrosis factor [TNF]). The data confirm that the adherens junctions of BTV-infected bPAECs remained intact until 24 hours post-infection, and that loss of monolayer impedance precisely coincided with onset of virus-induced cell death. -

First Wright brothers’ airplane patent, based on their 1902 glider, is filed in America. Aug. 8, 1903. The Langley gasoline engine model airplane is successfully launched from a catapult on a houseboat. Dec. 8, 1903. Second and last trial of the Langley airplane, piloted by Charles M. Manly, is wrecked in launching from a houseboat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Dec. 17, 1903. At Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville Wright flies for about 12 seconds over a distance of 120 feet, achieving the world’s first manned, powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. The Wright brothers made four flights that day. On the last, Wilbur Wright flew for 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. (Three days earlier, Wilbur Wright had attempted the first powered flight, managing to cover 105 feet in 3.5 seconds, but he could not sustain or control the flight and crashed.) Francis, 2001/2). June 1907: Brooklands Motor Circuit completed for Hugh & Ethel Locke King and first opened; construction work included diverting the River Wey in two places. Although the secondary use of the site as an aerodrome was not yet anticipated, the Brooklands Automobile Racing Club soon encouraged flying there by offering a £2,500 prize for the first powered flight around the Circuit by the end of 1907! February 1908: Colonel Lindsay Lloyd (Brooklands’ new Clerk of the Course) elected a member of the Aero Club of Great Britain. 29/06/1908: First known air photos of Brooklands taken from a hot air balloon – no sign of any existing route along the future Aerodrome Road (A/R) and the River Wey still meandered across the road’s future path although a footbridge(?) carried a rough track to Hollicks Farm (ref. -

Served in the Royal Navy as Ordinary Coder P/JX 404362 aboard the Cruiser H.M.S. Birmingham. He died on Sunday, 28th November 1943, along with twenty-six other members of the crew when a torpedo from U 407 hit the Birmingham. Although badly holed, the ship managed to reach the port of Alexandria. His grave is in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt grave no 5 H 2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HAROLD ERIC ACKROYD Age 25 Son of George Whiteley Ackroyd and Eliza Jane Ackroyd of Southport Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Flying Officer (Bomb Aimer) with 298 Squadron (Handley Page Halifax bombers) He died on the 27th March 1945 and is buried in Duke Street Cemetery, Southport, section 13, grave 22. LESLIE HAROLD ASHTON Age 23 Next of kin det ails not available Served as a Bombardier in the 111th Field Regiment, Ro yal Artillery. He died on Wednesday 14th April 1943. 21/07/2019 | VELHOGENERAL.COM.BR | CATEGORIAS: PERSONAGEM, SEGUNDA GUERRA MUNDIAL ARTHUR “BOMBER” HARRIS Por Luiz Reis* O Marechal da RAF Sir Arthur Travers Harris, 1º Baronete, GCB, OBE, AFC (13 de abril de 1892 – 5 de abril de 1984), também conhecido pelos apelidos dados pela imprensa e subordinados como “Bomber” (“Bombardeiro”) Harris ou “Butcher” (“Açougueiro”) Harris, foi o Comandante-em- Chefe do Comando de Bombardeiros (Bomber Command) da RAF (Força Aérea Real) inglesa durante o auge da campanha de bombardeio estratégico anglo-americana contra a Alemanha Nazista na Segunda Guerra Mundial. Em 1942, o Gabinete Britânico concordou com o “bombardeio de área” das cidades alemãs. Harris recebeu a tarefa de implementar a política do Primeiro-Ministro Winston Churchill e apoiou o desenvolvimento de novas táticas e inovadoras soluções tecnológicas para realizar a tarefa com mais eficiência. Harris auxiliou o Chefe do Estado-Maior da Aeronáutica da RAF, Charles Portal, na condução dos ataques mais devastadores do Reino Unido contra a infraestrutura e população alemãs, incluindo o polêmico Bombardeio de Dresden. O jovem Harris emigrou para a Rodésia do Sul em 1910, aos 17 anos, mas retornou à Inglaterra em 1915 para lutar no teatro europeu da Primeira Guerra Mundial. Ele se juntou ao Royal Flying Corps (força antecessora da RAF), com a qual permaneceu até a formação da Royal Air Force em 1918, e permaneceu na Força Aérea durante os anos 1920 e 1930, tendo servido na Índia, Mesopotâmia, Pérsia, Egito, Palestina e outros lugares. A Night Long Forgotten - 18th April 1944 At around 2300hrs on 18th April 1944 three members of the 384th took a shortcut – a shortcut that would lead to their deaths and ultimately the deaths of three Royal Air Force crew too. S/Sgt David Ollre, Cpl James Moore and Cpl Teddy Potocki – all three members of the communications section of the 384th Bomb Group – were cycling back to base. The assumption is they were returning from Geddington, possibly even the Star or the White Hart after a pleasant evening relaxing, when they turned to take a shortcut across the airfield presumably back to their billets. We can’t be sure of the exact route they took however what we do know is it took them across the 5000ft East / West runway. At the same time an RAF Short Stirling of 1657 Heavy Conversion Unit (HCU) was completing a series of night time ‘touch and goes’ – also known as ‘circuits and bumps’ – as part of a student training syllabus for new RAF Bomber Crews. The Short Stirling was the first of the RAF’s four engine bombers but by this stage of the war had been overtaken in performance and available numbers by both the Avro Lancaster and the Handley Page Halifax and generally retired from front line duties. Those aircraft retired now found themselves filling the essential role as the last part of the training programme for new crews to gain experience in operating large and complex aircraft similar to those they would be expected to fly over occupied Europe once fully fledged Bomber Command Aircrew.
