KING GEORGE V SCHOOL, SOUTHPORT. ROLL OF HONOUR WORLD WAR 1939 45 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ROBERT HUGH ABRAM AGE 19 Son of Robert and Elizabeth Ellen Abram of Hoscar, Lathom, Lancashire. Served in the Royal Navy as Ordinary Coder P/JX 404362 aboard the Cruiser H.M.S. Birmingham. He died on Sunday, 28th November 1943, along with twenty-six other members of the crew when a torpedo from U 407 hit the Birmingham. Although badly holed, the ship managed to reach the port of Alexandria. His grave is in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt grave no 5 H 2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HAROLD ERIC ACKROYD Age 25 Son of George Whiteley Ackroyd and Eliza Jane Ackroyd of Southport Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Flying Officer (Bomb Aimer) with 298 Squadron (Handley Page Halifax bombers) He died on the 27th March 1945 and is buried in Duke Street Cemetery, Southport, section 13, grave 22. LESLIE HAROLD ASHTON Age 23 Next of kin det ails not available Served as a Bombardier in the 111th Field Regiment, Ro yal Artillery. He died on Wednesday 14th April 1943. His grave is in the Tripoli War Cemetery, Libya - grave no 6.E.9. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HERBERT LESLIE BALDWIN Age 21 Son of Reuben and Gertrude Baldwin Served as a Corporal in the Royal Air Force He died on Wednesday 21st January 1942 and is buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore grave 12 D.19. NORMAN CASSON BANISTER Age 27 Son of Robert and Lillian Banister of Birkdale Husband of Edna Phyllis Banister Served as an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy on board H.M.S.Prince of Wales He died on Wednesday, 10th December 1941 when the H.M.S. Prince of Wales and H.M.S.Repulse where both sunk by Japanese aircraft. His name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, panel 47, column 1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THOMAS BATEMAN Details of age and next of kin not known. He served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Sergeant with 252Squadron. This squadron was equipped with Bristol Beaufighters at Edcu, Egypt. He died on the 12th March 1942 and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt column 250. HARRY BINNS Age 35 Son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Binns, husband of Annie Binns of Birkdale, Southport. Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Pilot Officer/Navigator with 78 Squadron (Handley Page Halifax Bombers) He died on Wednesday, 11th August 1943, when Halifax Mark II JD 151 EY-M crashed short of the runway after completing a bombing raid on Nurnberg, Germany, it ran out of fuel. He is buried in Southport Cemetery (Birkdale) section 6 grave 267. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EDWARD HUNTER BOND Age 22 Son of George Edward Metcalfe Bond and Eleanor Hunter Bond of Southport, husband of Margaret Lloyd Bond of Southport. Served with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Pilot Office, Wireless Operator/ Air Gunner with 460 Squadron, an Australian Squadron (Avro Lancasters.) He died on Sunday, 13th June, 1943, when Lancaster Mark I W4329 AR-K was lost near Dortmund, Germany. His grave is in Reichwald Forest War Cemetery, Germany grave 3.E.8. HENRY BUCKLEY Age 26 Son of Walter and Bertha Buckley of Southport. Served as an Ordinary Seaman on board t he battleship, H.M.S. Barham. He died on Tuesday, 25th November 1941 when H.M.S.Barham was sunk when hit by torpedoes from the U.331. There were 848 casualties. His name is on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent 44-2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ROBERT HENRY CARR. Age 22 Son of Henry J. and Elizabeth Carr of Southport. He served as a Flying Officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in the 44th Rhodesia Squadron, who were equipped with Avro Lancaster Bombers and based at Waddington, Lincolnshire. He died on Thursday, 11th March 1943, when Lancaster Mark I W481 KM-W crashed at Sassnitz while gardening (mine laying) in the Baltic. His name is on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey panel 123. EDWARD ROY CLOUGH Age and next of kin not available. Served as a Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps. He died on Sunday, 21st May 1944 and is buried in Nicosia War Cemetery, Cyprus grave 2.B.1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LAWRENCE STEELE COLLINS Age 21 Son of Herbert Leo and Elsie May Collins of Southport. He served as Flight Sergeant, Wireless Operator / Air Gunner in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve with 612 Squadron. This squadron flew out-dated Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk.V11s, bombers fitted with A.S.V.Radar. Their duties were to cover the Fleet and the Atlantic convoys. He died on Sunday 15th March 1942. His grave is in Iceland and he is buried in Reykjavik (Fossvogur) Cemetery, Iceland grave C.XL.10. DENNIS AUSTIN DENTON Age 22 Son of Hubert Austin Denton and Norah Elsie Denton of Southport, husband of Patricia Alexina Denton of Ainsdale, Southport. He served in the Royal Air Force as a Warrant Officer, Wireless Operator / Air Gunner with 502 Sqadron (Handley Page Halifax Bombers) The Squadrons duties were long range Atlantic patrols. He died on Wednesday, 30th August 1944 and is buried in Escoublac la-Baule, Loire-Atlantique, France. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JOHN HOLT DICKINSON AGE 21 Son of Norman and Mary Dickinson of Southport. Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Sergeant Pilot with 253 Squadron ( Hawker Hurricane Mark 1 Fighters) On 30th August, 253 Squadron recorded two enemy aircraft destroyed, five probables, one damaged. Sergeant Dickinson was one of three pilots lost on this day. He died on Friday 30th August 1940, one of The Few and is buried in St Mary s Churchyard in Egton, North Yorkshire, grave N.1. WILLIAM DOBSON AGE 28 Son of Edward and Alice Dobson Served as a Private with the 8th Battalion, Loyal North Lancs, Regiment He died on Wednesday 23rd.July 1941 and is commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial, Surrey, panel 9, column 1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JOSEPH HART DOWNS AGE 30 Son of Arthur Henry and Jessie Maude Mary Downs and husband of Alice Downs of Marshside, Southport. Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Flying Officer/Flying Instructor. He died on Tuesday 19th October 1943 and is buried in St.Johns Churchyard, Crossens, Southport, grave section F, no 44. CLIVE ENTWISTLE AGE 23 Son of Henry and Sarah Edith Entwistle of Southport. Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Flying Officer with 155 Squadron, based at Sapam, Burma. The Squadron was equipped with Spitfire Mark VIII s. He died o n Saturday 9 th December 1944 and is buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar (formerly Burma) grave 16a G 19 which is outside Yangon (formerly Rangoon) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHARLES ERIC EVANS AGE 33 Son of Charles and Mary Evans and husband of Annie Evans of Southport. Served as an Able Seaman aboard the destroyer H.M.S.Limbourne He died on Saturday 23rd October 1943 when the Limbourne, a Hunt Class destroyer, was sunk by T22, a German Torpedo Boat. His name is on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire panel 74, column 2. This memorial is on Southsea Common. JOHN RICHARD FENTON AGE 20 Son of Nancy Fenton of Churchtown, Served as a Sailor aboard the Merchant Ship, S.S.Gazcon (Glasgow) He died o n Wednesday 2 nd September 1942, when S.S.Gazcon was sunk in the Indian Ocean by the Japanese Submarine I.29. His name is on the Tower Hill Memorial, Tower Hill, London panel 51 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ KENNETH JACK FOSTER DFC and Bar AGE 26 Son of Mr. and Mrs J E Foster, husband of Eileen Foster of Southport. Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, as a Squadron Leader Navigator, originally with 51 Squasdron (Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bombers) and finally, at the time of his death, with 97 Squadron (Avro Lancaster Bombers) He died Thursday 23 September 1943, when Lancaster Mark III JA708 OF-P was shot down from 16,000ft by nightfighters. The squadron operational target was Manheim, Germany. He is buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany grave 18.B.25 WILLIAM GORDON AGE 27 Son of Thomas and Clara A.Gordon of Southport, husband of Thora Leonora Gordon. Served as a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force. He died o n Sunday 1st October 1944 His grave is in Accrington Cemetery, Lancashire section D, plot A, grave 105 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ARTHUR GREEN AGE 26 Son of James and Ella Green of Birkdale, Southport, husband of Eva Ruth Green of Haskayne Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Leading Aircraftman with 172 Squadron (Vickers Wellingtons) He died on Tuesday 12th January 1943 His grave is in Southport (Birkdale) Cemetery section C grave 2. DONALD ADDIE HALSALL AGE 21 Son of Robert and Marie Macnee Addie Halsall of Southport Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Pilot Officer Observer with 254 Squadron (Bristol Blenheim Mark 1V) He died on Saturday 27th December 1941 His grave is in the Trondheim (Stavne) Cemetery, Norway, grave G 5 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DENNIS HARGREAVES AGE 22 Son of John and Emily Hargreaves of Southport Served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as a Flying Officer/Navigator with 138 Squadron (Special Duties Squadron) - Westland Lysanders, Handley Page Halifax Bombers and later, Short Stirlings on Cloak and Dagger Operations. He died o n Friday 2 nd June 1944, when Halifax Mark V LL289 NF-P, on route from Tempsford to France on Operation Percy, crashed on fire 33kms. south west of Angers. His grave is in Longue Communal Cemetery, Maine-et-Loire, France - grave 4 FRANK HARRISON AGE 20 Son of James Yates Harrison and Annie Ellen Harrison of Birkdale, Southport Served in the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Coder, aboard the destroyer H.M.S.Martin He died on Tuesday 10th November 1942 when the Martin was torpedoed by U 431.
