Bahamas 2018 Ports of Entry (REVISED) In Spring 2018, Bahamas Customs announced a new list of official ports of entry where you can clear customs, immigration and buy a cruising permit. Our experience is that the official list on the Bahamas Customs website is inaccurate in some places. At some ports listed, customs may not clear general boaters, except under extraordinary circumstances. Conversely, some marinas where customs regularly clears are not included on the website list. In March 2018, Waterway Guide conducted a national survey to find out which ports of entry were actual places to clear in. The list below reflects the results of that survey and serves as our unofficial guide. We have included newly assigned phone numbers. Customs headquarters has reaffirmed that transport fees should not normally be charged and, if so, a receipt must be given. We have learned, however, that when customs has to travel long distances to clear a vessel, voluntary tipping is an accepted practice. Our general advice is to always call a marina or customs well in advance. This list updates pages 44-45 in Waterway Guide’s 2018 Bahamas Edition. Manatees Adapt to Their New Home in the Berry Islands
BUSINESS NAME Conservation of marine mammals and their habitats through scientific research and educational outreach Summer 2012 Manatees adapt to their new home Volume 2 Inside this issue: in the Berry Islands Issue 3 President’s 2 Update In October 2011 after hurricane Irene, two manatees, Rita and her female calf, Georgie, both previously known from Spanish Wells, North Eleuthera were sighted in Nassau Harbour. On advice from the Department of Marine Resources (DMR), Atlantis Dolphin Cay captured the animals. After a collaborative effort spearheaded by BMMRO, a release and Rare sightings 2 monitoring plan was initiated. Rita and Georgie were successfully released in Great Harbour Cay (GHC), Berry Islands on April 19th 2012. A population of four manatees has been residing in GHC for the last 13 years. A month at Sea 2 One of the resident adult females Gina, known previously from Florida, was first sighted in Andros in 1999 and traveled to GHC in 2000. Gina has given birth to 3 -4 calves whilst in GHC, all of which have remained in the area. In the late winter Are whales 3 of 2011 Gina gave birth to a female calf, JJ. Both are frequently seen by the stressed? public and are often in the company of the resident adult and juvenile males. These animals are the only known breeding population of manatees in The Ba- BMMRO hamas and study of this small population has given Bahamian and US scientists 3 the opportunity to learn about manatee habitat use in The Bahamas. Resident Juvenile Male Contributors Rita and Georgie were released in GHC marina, and quickly joined up with both resident males, who were seen in the Satellite tracking marina during the time of release.

HARDY ESHBAUGH Department ofBotany, Miami University Oxford, OH 45056 ABSTRACT.-The use of herbal love potions on Andros Island, Bahamas, is examined including the various species, plant parts used, methods of preparation and social and medicinal functions of the love potions. Twelve species are referred to including Bourreria ovata, Bursera simaruba, Cassy tha fill/ormis, Cordia bahamensis, Diospyros crassinervis, Erythroxylon rotundtfolia, Eugenia axillaris, Phoradendron sp., Pinus caribaea, Swietenia Mahagoni, Tabebuia bahamensis and Thouinia discolor. Information is based upon inter views with seven bush medicinal practitioners, each of whom employ a slight variation on the same basic recipe. In rural and urban sites, the use of bush medicine differs in that isolated rural areas must rely to a greater extent upon native cures while only remnant medicinal practices in the form of love potions remain in urban sites. Although greatly disturbed, Andros Island still contains the elements of an essentially natural ecosystem. For several centuries the naturalized Africans in the West Indies have been sampling their environment and have compiled a substantial knowledge of those plants which are beneficial and harmful to man. The Caribbean island society has relied upon medicinal practitioners, in the past referred to as "grannies," who utilize the know ledge compiled by their ancestors to care for the daily medical needs of the community. Today Andros Island is influenced to an increasing extent by the central Bahamian government as well as by contacts with travelers from other countries.
