The community shop continues to serve the village but due to the current guidelines we are putting the following into operation:-

Shop opening hours will be 9.00am -1.00pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm Satur- day and Sunday 9.00am -12.00 midday.

To keep you and ourselves as safe as possible we are asking everyone to wash their hands when entering the shop. The facilities are there for you to use.

We ask that only two single people or one family go into the shop at one time and you keep to the 2 metre distance rule.

If you live in the parish of Horsley and you have a cough, temperature or cold then ring us on 01453 836662 and we will take a order and arrange a collection or delivery.

We are struggling to currently keep up with our supplies as suppliers cannot keep up with the high demand but we hope that this will adjust to normality as the weeks go on.

Please keep safe and see you on the other side. Our own Tom Herbert of Rockness is running The Long Table which is about bring people together with food. In light of Coronavirus, people self-isolating and the practice of social distancing coming into effect we’ve found we are well placed to help build strong communities like never before.

We can drop them direct to the door (with or without contact) or these can be collected from our warehouse. For deliveries we are currently able to cover the entire . We endeavour to cater for most dietary requirements, please let us know of any allergies when you make your order. The current menu includes:

Lentil Dahl Turkey Curry (mild) Sausage Casserole Bean Stew Mediterranean Vegetable Pasta Chickpea Curry

Citizens Advice Stroud & Cotswold – Attendance Allowance

This is a benefit that helps with extra costs if you have an illness or disability, either physical or mental or both, and severe enough to require someone else to help you with your personal care needs. You can make a claim for Attendance Allowance if you have reached State Pension age or are older, and it is normally payable after six months of needing the care. It is paid at one of two rates, £58.70 or £87.65 per week, depending on your care needs. Attendance Allowance is tax-free and not means-tested, which means your income and savings will not affect the level you may be entitled to.

You do not need to have someone actually caring for you in order to make a claim. The claim form can be obtained from the Attendance Allowance helpline on 0800 731 0122 by providing your contact details. Please note that the form is complicated and lengthy and you may wish to get advice and help before completing it. If you would like more ad- vice on this or other matters please contact Stroud Citizens Advice weekdays 10 am to 4 pm on Freephone: 0808 800 0510. Further information can also be found at www.citizensadvice.org.uk and then search for attendance allowance.

Please note that following national guidance on Covid-19 Citizens Advice Stroud has closed its face to face services at all offices and outreaches, but will continue to operate a phone and email service. Climate Change Village Meeting Follow Up

The village meeting last month, arranged by Carbon Neutral Horsley (CNH) and the Horsley Parish Council (HPC) discussed how the village should address the climate emergency. The session allowed the 50 or more residents who attended to discuss practical things that can be done, both as a community and individually, to reduce the village’s carbon foot- print. They also set out their vision for Horsley’s resilience to climate change.

What is our vision? A summary of the elements of the vision created in the meeting is provided on the following page. The main themes and ide- as that emerged have been presented to the HPC. With the Council, CNH would like to prioritise 3 areas:

 Growing food,  Improving transport  Community energy generation.

Working Groups! For each of these, we want to create a working group. These groups would explore their topic with the aim of creating short term carbon reductions and would also research and propose longer term ac- tions. The current aim is to establish these groups over the next month and (Covid-19 permitting) have them report back to a further village meet- ing in the autumn.

CNH are seeking a Parish Councillor for each of these groups but we want much wider contributions too. Are you interested in growing more food sustainably and locally, in finding better local transport solutions or investigating options for generation of energy through local community schemes? We need, and would very much welcome your involve- ment. If you are interested, please contact:  Growing Food Group: Ruth Liengaard (rsliengaard.gmail.com) or Simon Allen ([email protected])

 Better Transport Solutions Group: Vaughan Webber ([email protected])

 Community Energy Generation Group: Norman kay ([email protected], tel. 833458)

I know that there are a lot of distractions from the climate issues at the moment but it is important that we keep up momentum even if we can’t meet physically and have to communicate virtually for a while; so please join us. Thanks, Paul Archer, Carbon Neutral Horsley

CNH to HCAN

A strong undercurrent from the village meeting on climate change last month was that residents want hints, tips and knowledge on how to reduce their carbon footprint. Such items can help make the seem- ingly huge task of responding to the climate emergency a little more manageable, especially when interleaved with ‘good news’ stories.

To facilitate this, CNH plans to align more closely with Nailsworth Climate Action Network (NCAN) group which has, for many months, produced a lot of this sort of information. Part of that process is to change the name, Carbon Neutral Horsley, to Horsley Climate Action Network (HCAN).

HCAN will have a new Instagram and Facebook presence. Instagram will be searchable as @horsleyclimateactionnetwork. The existing Facebook site will be renamed as Horsley Climate Action Network. Please sign up for both to receive practical infor- mation on how to respond to the climate emergency, comment and make these sites ex- citing with us.

This is new to us…

We never wanted our customers to shop online – we wanted them to come in, say hi, and browse. But now things are a bit different. Customers can’t come into the shops, see what’s new, or what we’re excited about. So we’re trying to create an online shop that replicates just a bit of the whole ‘Yellow-Lighted’ buying experience. One thing – we’re booksellers, not web designers. We’ll work on making the site easier to navigate over the next few weeks.

Stock: The stock listed in our online shop is what our computerised stock system thinks we have in stock. It’s not wholly accurate, but gives you a fair idea of what’s on the shelves today.

Book ordering: As long as you’ve ordered from us by about 4pm, most books will be with us the next day, and we can send them on to you. If they have to come from the publisher, this usually takes a couple more days – but it depends on the publisher. We can get hold of pretty much anything in print – if you’re patient enough. The "online Shop" is on: https://yellowlightedbookshop.co.uk/, or phone 01666500221.

Current circumstances mean that there might be unpredictable delays in the supply chain. Please bear with us.

Horsley Orchard

Project &

Growing Local Food Sustainably and the Horsley Orchard Project

Phew! The coronavirus, with all the huge challenges it brings, is kicking in as I write this. I feel overwhelmed and sometimes helpless in the face of it, especially coming on top of the climate change challenges.

But….Growing our own food is something we can still do - apart and to- gether. Learning how to do it well is looking to become a lot more than a "would be nice" thing to do. At the very successful village meet- ing organised by Carbon Neutral Horsley (CNH) and the Parish Council last month, many ex- pressed an interest in growing more food.

So…. this is a call for us to meet up and take things forward to- gether! A starting point…. "No dig" beds grow a lot of food and Simon Allen of CNH has been growing wonderful vegetables for years by this method. Simon and I would like to establish a no dig bed and some espaliered fruit trees some- where near the village hall as a role model for individuals’ gardens. That seems a good initial plan for taking forward the thoughts from the village meeting but we need some help to realise it.

Looking ahead…. for those without their own garden, Nupend Orchard offers the space for 8 to12 small raised beds and has a long south facing wall for espaliers. I believe that there are other potential sites for commu- nity growing in the Parish. There are already many successful templates for community or allotment gardens to choose from in the District. We just need some more individuals prepared to contribute a little bit of time and energy to make it happen.

If you are interested in growing more of your own food sustainably, please get in touch with me, Ruth at rsliengaard.gmail.com or Simon at [email protected]
