Alawi 1 Hayla Alawi Pamela J Mackintosh Undergraduate Research Award May 8th, 2020 Jeju Island, the Three Clans Myth, and Women Divers: Female Importance in Jeju’s Cultural History Introduction Jeju1 Island, officially the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, lies 90 kilometers off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula and forms a province of South Korea. It is an interesting place, considered by many historians to be unique from mainland Korea before it was absorbed into the larger state, with fascinating cultural phenomena and a murky past. Although there is not much scholarship on the early history of Jeju2 and little in the written record about the island, it is possible to theorize what early Jeju cultural history may have looked like through a combined examination of the island’s mythology and modern-day culture. To gain a greater understanding of what early Jeju human culture may have looked like, I will examine the Myth of the Three Clans of Jeju Island, Jeju’s most prominent foundation myth. It is not the only foundation myth originating from the Korean Peninsula, but it is unique in that it features a key reversal between the roles of men and women in a narrative that is otherwise similar to other Korean foundation myths, the rest of which are found on mainland Korea. Myths can be thought of as reflecting a people’s society, culture, and perceived history, so the nature of 1 Note on Korean romanization: both the Revised Romanization of Korean (RR) and the McCune-Reischauer (MR) systems of Korean romanization will be used in this paper. -

Covaciu-Marcov, E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. The south-western part of Mehedinţi County comprises many herpetofauna species, compared to most regions in Romania. This is how we managed to encounter 14 amphibian species (Salamandra salamandra, Lissotriton vulgaris, Triturus cristatus, Triturus dobrogicus, Bombina bombina, Bombina variegata, Pelobates fuscus, Bufo bufo, Bufo viridis, Hyla arborea, Pelophylax ridibundus, Pelophylax lessonae, Rana dalmatina, Rana temporaria) plus Pelophylax kl. esculentus and 15 reptile species (Emys orbicularis, Testudo hermanni, Ablepharus kitaibelii, Lacerta agilis, Lacerta viridis, Podarcis muralis, Podarcis taurica, Darevskia praticola, Anguis fragilis, Zamenis longissimus, Dolichophis caspius, Coronella austriaca, Natrix natrix, Natrix tessellata, Vipera ammodytes). Salamandra salamandra, Bombina variegata and Rana temporaria were identified at very low altitudes, lower than any other indication from Romania up to present. This is explained by the fact that mountain valleys, bearing here a typical aspect, reach all the way to the Danube, carrying with them the occurring species. -

Between Tradition and Modernity. Case Study: Oltenia Region, Romania
HUMAN GEOGRAPHIES – Journal of Studies and Research in Human Geography (2010) 4.1, 105-119 www.humangeographies.org.ro DEMOGRAPHIC BEHAVIOUR OF THE ROMA POPULATION – BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERNITY. CASE STUDY: OLTENIA REGION, ROMANIA Mihaela-Daniela Predaa* aFaculty of Geography, Bucharest University, Bucharest Romania Abstract: Analyzing the demographic behavior of the Roma population is a difficult endeavor due to the fact that the available statistical data concerning this population’s exact number presents significant errors. Considering the fertility data, to which we should add the mortality rates, we appreciate that Roma, as an ethnic group, have had a mostly ascending evolution from a demographical point of view - and this situation isn’t always reflected by the statistics. As far as the fertility data goes, its level is dictated by a series of factors whose detailed analysis shows a past preference for a high number of children per family, specifically for the continuously nomadic tribes, also associated with increased values of fertility rates which perpetuated to this day. The mortality values registered within the Roma population fall within the standard values for the entire population - differences were spotted by analyzing the infant mortality. On a final note, these indicators are meant to present inequalities based on the living standards of the population. The analysis of migrants as an important component of the migratory movement brings into discussion one of the most current subjects: that of the percentage of Roma population that participate to the international migration flow. The preference for destination countries, which in most cases is attributed to their previously nomadic traditional life style, is determined by a series of factors, the most important of which being their financial situation. -

Sea Deity Beliefs of the Kuroshio Oceanic Cultural Sphere: Maritime
Island Studies Journal, 13(1), pp. 171-184 Sea deity beliefs of the Kuroshio oceanic cultural sphere: maritime traditions and cultural interaction among Jeju Island, Zhoushan Archipelago, and the Ryukyu Islands Nam-chun Heo Jeju National University, South Korea Jeju Marine Life and Culture Research Team, Center for Jeju Studies, South Korea [email protected] Hyun-jeung Lee Jeju National University, South Korea Jeju Marine Life and Culture Research Team, Center for Jeju Studies, South Korea [email protected] ABSTRACT: This study analyzes sea the deity myths of Jeju Island (Korea), the Zhoushan Archipelago (China), and the Ryukyu Islands and Kyushu Region (Japan). The folk culture permeating this region is a common creation produced by long-term interactions among the islands via the Kuroshio Current, starting with primordial sea imagery. Jeju, on the last branch of the Kuroshio Current, was positioned to embrace the cultures of the Korean Peninsula, the Japanese archipelago, and north and south China. Jeju’s people had opportunities to absorb oceanic culture, such as oceanic beliefs, myths, and rituals that moved along the maritime route. However, Jeju’s historical political relations, such as conflict, negotiation, conquest, and submission, shaped and supplemented the maritime traditions. The religious system slowly changed over time, and yet the islanders maintained a sense of identity derived from the ocean. This collective identity relates to the fact that many elements of the Kuroshio oceanic cultural sphere simultaneously existed on various small regional islands across the region.
