Alawi 1 Hayla Alawi Pamela J Mackintosh Undergraduate Research Award May 8th, 2020 Jeju Island, the Three Clans Myth, and Women Divers: Female Importance in Jeju’s Cultural History Introduction Jeju1 Island, officially the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, lies 90 kilometers off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula and forms a province of South Korea. It is an interesting place, considered by many historians to be unique from mainland Korea before it was absorbed into the larger state, with fascinating cultural phenomena and a murky past. Although there is not much scholarship on the early history of Jeju2 and little in the written record about the island, it is possible to theorize what early Jeju cultural history may have looked like through a combined examination of the island’s mythology and modern-day culture. To gain a greater understanding of what early Jeju human culture may have looked like, I will examine the Myth of the Three Clans of Jeju Island, Jeju’s most prominent foundation myth. It is not the only foundation myth originating from the Korean Peninsula, but it is unique in that it features a key reversal between the roles of men and women in a narrative that is otherwise similar to other Korean foundation myths, the rest of which are found on mainland Korea. Myths can be thought of as reflecting a people’s society, culture, and perceived history, so the nature of 1 Note on Korean romanization: both the Revised Romanization of Korean (RR) and the McCune-Reischauer (MR) systems of Korean romanization will be used in this paper. -
Sea Deity Beliefs of the Kuroshio Oceanic Cultural Sphere: Maritime
Island Studies Journal, 13(1), pp. 171-184 Sea deity beliefs of the Kuroshio oceanic cultural sphere: maritime traditions and cultural interaction among Jeju Island, Zhoushan Archipelago, and the Ryukyu Islands Nam-chun Heo Jeju National University, South Korea Jeju Marine Life and Culture Research Team, Center for Jeju Studies, South Korea [email protected] Hyun-jeung Lee Jeju National University, South Korea Jeju Marine Life and Culture Research Team, Center for Jeju Studies, South Korea [email protected] ABSTRACT: This study analyzes sea the deity myths of Jeju Island (Korea), the Zhoushan Archipelago (China), and the Ryukyu Islands and Kyushu Region (Japan). The folk culture permeating this region is a common creation produced by long-term interactions among the islands via the Kuroshio Current, starting with primordial sea imagery. Jeju, on the last branch of the Kuroshio Current, was positioned to embrace the cultures of the Korean Peninsula, the Japanese archipelago, and north and south China. Jeju’s people had opportunities to absorb oceanic culture, such as oceanic beliefs, myths, and rituals that moved along the maritime route. However, Jeju’s historical political relations, such as conflict, negotiation, conquest, and submission, shaped and supplemented the maritime traditions. The religious system slowly changed over time, and yet the islanders maintained a sense of identity derived from the ocean. This collective identity relates to the fact that many elements of the Kuroshio oceanic cultural sphere simultaneously existed on various small regional islands across the region.
SOAS-AKS Working Papers in Korean Studies
School of Oriental and African Studies University of London SOAS-AKS Working Papers in Korean Studies No.40 The Course of Korean Historiography: from Orthodox to post-Altaic Andrew Logie August 2013 http://www.soas.ac.uk/japankorea/research/soas-aks-papers/ SOAS-AKS Working Papers in Korean Studies, No.40 August 2013 The Course of Korean Historiography: from Orthodox to post-Altaic Andrew Logie University of Helsinki. © 2013 The Course of Korean Historiography: from Orthodox to post-Altaic In broadest terms, there are two main branches of Korean historiography, the conventionally more Sinocentric 'orthodox' narrative and the opposing 'northern' or 'continental-Altaic' narrative. The orthodox narrative is most associated with the premodern Confucian tradition of historiography, and the northern/continental-Altaic narrative with modern historical analysis influenced by notions of ethnic nationalism and the Altaic language hypothesis. However, even before the modern era the substance of a non-Sinic narrative was present within orthodox tradition and, just as the Altaic hypothesis continues to inform popular Korean historiography today, the orthodox narrative at once survives owing to the body of tradition it maintains. If not interdependent, they are inseparably interrelated. The difference between the two narratives primarily lies in their description of the ancient period prior to the Three Kingdoms, in particular the notion of Old Joseon which, regardless of its location and early periodization, is largely accepted in both narratives -
A Riot, a Rebellion, a Massacre: Remembering the 1948 Jeju Uprising Brittany M
__________________________________________________________________ A Riot, A Rebellion, A Massacre: Remembering the 1948 Jeju Uprising Brittany M. Dixon Brittany M. Dixon is a graduate student at EIU . She wrote this paper for Dr. Jinhee Lee’s HIS 5 700: Collective Violence in East Asia. ______________________________________________________________________________ “Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past,” wrote George Orwell. 1 The Jeju Uprising of 1948 and how it is remembered is a clear example of this truism. Any mention of the Jeju Uprising was illegal in South Korea until the early 2000’s. Those who spoke out risked heavy penalties, including jail time and torture. In the year 2000, after nearly fif ty years of silence, South Korea's president, Kim Dae - jung, opened up discussion on the topic of the Jeju Uprising and established Korea’s first Truth and Reconciliation committee. This essay describes how South Korea controlled the official memory of the Jeju Uprising through textbook revision and language. That control, in turn, has fundamentally shaped both memory and history in South Korea. Methodology This study assumes that memory is created. It works under the premise that people cho o se what they c ommit to memory and what they forget. In terms of the Jeju Uprising, this approach differs from other authors on the topic because it focuses less on placing blame on any of the involved parties , and more on how the experience is remembered and felt by Zai nichi Koreans (Koreans living in Japan), North Koreans, and , most im portantly for this paper, South Koreans. -
