The July 20-21, 2018 Record Debarim (Hazzon)

PARASHAT DEBARAIM (HAZZON) Shabbat Service Candle Lighting Friday night

8:06 P.M. In this week's , Moses addresses the people reviewing the events that occurred, the Friday evening service laws that were given and recounting the instructions that G-d had given them in the course of 7:15 PM. their 40-year journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. Moses recalls how he told them that he could not bear the burden of their strife alone, and Shabbat morning service directed them to pick leaders from each tribe who were wise, discerning, and experienced. 9:00A.M. They did, and Moses charged the magistrates to hear and decide disputes justly. Moses Shabbat afternoon service directed them to bring him any matter that was too difficult to decide. Moses recalls the story of the spies, how the scouts reported that it was a good land, but the 7:30 P.M. people flouted G-d's command and refused to go into the land, instead murmuring in their tents about reports of people stronger and taller than they and large cities with sky-high walls. Moses recounted that G-d became angry and vowed that not one of the men of that generation would BIRTHDAY WISHES: see the good land that G-d swore to their fathers, except Caleb because he remained loyal to G -d. Moses complained that because of the people, G-d was incensed with Moses too, and Dr. Thad Ritch de Herrera told him that he would not enter the land either but Joshua would enter the land. Moses told how the people replied that now they would go up and fight. Despite Moses warning them not Ms. Ellen Geller Mr. Peter Levin to, as G-d would not travel in their midst and they would be routed by their enemies, they would not listen and the Amorites crushed them at Hormah. Mr. Gary Polikoff Moses recalled how they remained at Kadesh a long time, then marched back into the wilderness. Moses recounts how G-d instructed them regarding three nations whose land was off-limits for them: Seir (Edom), Moab and Amon. These lands were the rightful inheritance of the descendants of Esau and Lot. The people were instructed that they should be very careful not to provoke them, for G-d would not give them any of their land.

Is the menu of the affected on the preceding Shabbat of Tish'a Be'Ab?

It is clearly permissible to eat meat on the Shabbat before Tish'a Be'Ab, even if Tish'a Be'Ab begins on Mosa'eh Shabbat. In fact, the Magen Abraham (Rabbi Abraham Gombiner, Poland, 1637-1682) writes that it is considered sinful to abstain from meat on the Shabbat before Tish'a Be'ab, and such a practice is a " Ta'ut" - an erroneous custom. Even during Se'uda Shelishit, one may eat meat and have a lavish meal. The Shulhan Arukh writes that one's Se'uda Shelishit before Tish'a Be'Ab may be "like the meal of King Shelomo in his time." There is always a L'ellah (Hatsi) said after the reading of the in the morning. It precedes the and reading. This is done to indicate that the obligatory reading has been concluded. In contrast, after the reading of the Torah in Minha (afternoon service) we do not say the Kaddish. Even on Tish'a BeAb and Kippur when we read a Haftarah after the we still don't say the Kaddish. The reason is that we have to be aware that the Kaddish, in addition to being praises to the Name of The Almighty, serves as a separation between parts of the services. In the case of Minha, the separation will occur only after the return of the Torah to the Hekhal. The Maftir is effectively the third of three people called to the Torah. It is our Minhag that the Minister of the Congregation reads the Haftarah of Shabbat Hazon (the Shabbat preceding TBA). The reason is that this Haftarah (like the other preceding two) contains the reprimands that G-d gave to his People. In this way it will hopefully stir people to the proper path. The Torah reading on TBA in the morning is read in a softer voice and with barely chanted Ta'amim. The reason is obvious. Torah reading is a very happy occurrence. However, on this day of national mourning, we can't bring ourselves to that high level. In contrast, the Torah reading of Minha of TBA is read in a loud voice and fully chanted Ta'amim. The prophet Zachariah said that the four fasts pertaining to our national calamities will be changed in the future to days of happiness and gladness (LeSasson UlSimha). May we merit seeing these days. Amen.

Parashah con’t from first page Moses recounted how G-d instructed them to set out across the river Arnon, to attack Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and occupy his land. Sihon and his men took the field but

REFUAH SHELEMAH G-d delivered him to the Israelites, and they defeated him and captured all his towns, leaving no survivor, retaining as booty only the cattle and the spoil. Moses recounted how King Og of Bashan and his men took the field against them at Edrei, but G-d delivered King Og of Bashan, Mr. Shalom Atias his men, and his 60 towns into their hands, and they left no survivor. Og was so big that his iron Mr. Vittorio Ginzburg bedstead was nine cubits long and four cubits wide. Moses recounted how he assigned land to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Dr. Jacob Lahijani Manasseh. He told again how he charged them that even though they had already received their Mrs. Andrea Rich land, they needed to serve as troops at the head of their kinsmen, leaving only their wives, children, and livestock in the towns that Moses had assigned to them, until G-d had granted the Mr. Sal Sonsino people their land west of the Jordan. He also recounted how he charged Joshua not to fear the kingdoms west of the Jordan, for G-d would battle for him and would do to all those kingdoms Mr. Reginald Young just as G-d had done to Sihon and Og.

Parashat Debarim has 105 verses Haftarat (Hazon) has 27 verses Sefer HaHinukh: Parashat Debarim contains 2 Mitzvot.

This week's Haftarah is from Isaiah and will be read by Rabbi Albert Gabbai in memory of his brother, Mr. Baruch Gabbai.
