  • Hédi A. Jaouad. “Limitless Undying Love”: the Ballad of John and Yoko and the Brownings
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Revue CMC Review (York University) Hédi A. Jaouad. “Limitless Undying Love”: The Ballad of John and Yoko and the Brownings. Manchester Center, Vermont: Shires Press, 2015. 132 pp. Hédi A. Jaouad is a distinguished scholar known for his expertise on Francophone North African (Maghrebi) literature. Professor of French and Francophone literature at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York, he is the Editor of CELAAN, the leading North American journal focusing on North African literature and language. He is also interested in Victorian literature, with particular concentration on Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, on whom he published a previous book, The Brownings’ Shadow at Yaddo (2014). However, his current book, “Limitless Undying Love”: The Ballad of John and Yoko and the Brownings, shows a whole other side to his scholarship, for it links the Brownings to those icons of contemporary popular culture, John Lennon and Yoko Ono. This is a concise, economical little study (132 pp.), but it manages, in brief compass, to be pluridisciplinary, building bridges between poetry, music, and painting. As he modestly proclaims, it shows “his passion for more than one liberal art” (7). The title, “Limitless Undying Love,” comes from a late John Lennon song, “Across the Universe.” Hédi Jaouad reminds us that the titular “Ballad” applies to both poetry and music. He compares what he has called 19th-century “Browningmania” to 20th-century “Beatlemania,” both of which spread to North America in what has been popularly described as a “British Invasion.” Lest the reader assume Jaouad is only tracing coincidental parallels, he makes it clear from the outset that John and Yoko actually saw themselves as reincarnations of the Brownings, and consciously exploited the similarities in their lives and careers.

Her artistic triumphs encompass chart-topping hits, platinum albums, and successful forays into several genres of popular music. Through her multi-faceted solo career and her legacy as an original vocalist in the group Sister Sledge, which included her lead vocals on worldwide anthems like "We Are Family" and "He's the Greatest Dancer," she's inspired millions of listeners across all generations. Kathy is currently traversing new terrain with her critically acclaimed show The Brighter Side of Day: A Tribute to Billie Holiday plus studio projects that span elements of R&B, rock, and EDM. Indeed, Kathy's reached a fascinating juncture in her journey. That journey began in Philadelphia. The youngest of five daughters born to Edwin and Florez Sledge, Kathy possessed a prodigious musical talent. Her grandmother was an opera singer who taught her harmonies while her father was one-half of Fred & Sledge, the tapping duo who broke racial barriers on Broadway. "I learned the art of music from my father and my grandmother. The business part of music was instilled through my mother," she says. Schooled on an eclectic array of artists like Nancy Wilson and Mongo Santamaría, Kathy and her sisters honed their act around Philadelphia and signed a recording contract with Atco Records.

  • The Truth About What Michael Jackson Had (And Didn't Have) in His Bedroom
Raven Woods, Contributor Raven Woods is an author, educator, pop culture journalist and author of Allforloveblog The Truth About What Michael Jackson Had (And Didn't Have) In His Bedroom This is all old news from a decade ago, and there is absolutely nothing in those reports that hasn't already had its day in court. HUFFPOST 07/08/2016 Updated Jul 14, 2016 Last week, as the world geared up to remember Michael Jackson on his seventh death anniversary, a deluge of negative publicity hit regarding allegations of "disturbing" child porn that was supposedly uncovered during the 2003 raid of Neverland, conducted prior to Jackson's 2004 indictment on charges of molesting a minor. The highly publicized trial in 2005 resulted in Jackson's acquittal on all fourteen counts. The problem is that the police documents in question and the list of items seized from Neverland are not "new" or "recently unearthed" documents, as some media outlets have mistakenly claimed in an effort to bolster salacious headlines. These were all items that were entered in court back in 2005 ― items that were well known to both the prosecution and defense and were presented before both Judge Melville and the jury. None of the items seized from Neverland fit the legal definition of child pornography, and in fact many of the items that are currently creating the most media hysteria were not pornographic at all. They were legal art books; a few of them containing some examples of adult erotica, but again, these were not titles that could be in any way deemed as pornographic or even obscene.
