MUSIC AT THE BASILICA Music for Pentecost Pentecost marks the culmination of the “Week of Weeks” that is the Easter Season. Whitsunday is an older term for Pentecost, de- rived from the white robes worn by baptismal candidates. Baptisms, often held outside in rivers, were frequently postponed from the Easter Vigil to Pentecost due to the chilling weather of cold northern European climates. Today’s Sequence, called the “Golden Se- quence,” is traditionally sung at Pentecost; it begins: Veni, Sancte Spiritus/Et emitte coelitus/Lucis tuae radium (Come Holy Spirit, send forth the heavenly radiance of your light). Follow along in along in your hymnals; the English translation is given there as well.

For Pentecost, we will sing a choral Kyrie and Agnus Dei by Rodrigo de Ceballos (c. 1525-1572) from the colonial music archive in Guatemala City. He was born in Aracena (), and was ordained a priest in in 1556. He was named maestro di capel- la in Malaga in 1554, in the cathedral of Córdoba in 1556, and in the Royal Chapel of Granada in 1561. He is a composer of the An- dalusian school, alongside better-known composers such as Francisco Guerrero (who, with Pedro Fernández de Castilleja, gave him his holy orders) and Cristobal de Morales. His works are preserved in various Spanish and Latin American cathedrals.

Gregor Aichinger (1564-1628) was a Catholic priest and organist to the powerful merchant-banker Fugger family in Augsberg. His Factus Est Repente is one of the most popular motets of all time for both Pentecost and Confirmations. Published in 1606, the traditional elements of plainchant and fugue are made to be fully expressive of the spirit and meaning of the text. The opening gives the impression of suddenness, the descent in pitch indicating the descent of wind from heaven. Later, he employs a double canon, one a psalm tone in augmentation, another a descant. There are percussive repeated notes and homophonic sections reminiscent of the Venetians, and no surprise there, since he also was one of the first German composers to use a basso continuo.

BULLETIN NEWS – MAY 14-15, 2016 EASTER 90-DAYS OF GRACE PERIOD ended Tuesday, May 10th. This also means it is the end of our 7:00 pm Masses. This was an ex- periment of sorts -- had this Mass been well-attended it would have continued into the future and, hopefully, we would have found priests who were able to celebrate it. However, attendance has been much less than ex- pected. Therefore, due to low attendance coupled with a shortage of available priests, Monsignor Sakano decided to cancel this evening Mass going forward. SAINT ANTHONY NOVENA: Tuesday, May 17th is week 10 of our 13-week Novena Mass in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. Thankfully, attendance at this Mass has been extremely good. We average between 35 to 45 people each week. The novena will end on Tuesday, June 7th. For the duration of this time period, we will continue to offer light refreshments – coffee, cookies, etc. – immediately after the 12:10 PM Mass. Many thanks to Anna Caroselli and Lina Faele for their donation of cookies and donuts, respectively, this past week. SAINT ANTHONY’S FEAST DAY: Monday, June 13th is Saint An- thony’s feast day. There WILL be a mass at 12:10 PM. After this, we go back to our original schedule of Masses: the Saturday 5:30 PM Vigil Mass and the Sunday 2:00 PM Vietnamese Mass. There will be occasion- al Sunday Masses throughout the year to accommodate all the societies currently associated with MPB Church and, of course, those Masses will always be announced beforehand in this Bulletin and via notices posted in and around the church and rectory. SAINT ANTHONY SOCIETY OF GIOVINAZZO IN NEW YORK: The Saint Anthony of Giovinazzo will hold its annual Mass on Saturday, June 11th. Their Mass will be incorporated into our regular Saturday 5:30 PM Vigil Mass. Anyone who has a Mass intention for that day can rest assured that your intentions will be honored as sched- uled. Mass will be celebrated by our former pastor, Father Fabian Grifone, O.F.M. Unfortunately, due to a number of different factors, the Saint Anthony Society decided last year to cancel its annual feast. However, there WILL BE A RELIGIOUS PROCESSION immediately following the 5:30 PM Mass on June 11th. Their Saint Anthony statue will be carried through the streets of Little Italy as is done every year. The fabulous and much- loved RED MIKE FESTIVAL BAND led by Louise Acompora will pro- vide the music as they’ve done since this society’s feast began. Saint Anthony is one of the most beloved saints and is known through- out the world. Everyone is welcome to join in the procession; whether you have a devotion to Saint Anthony or just want to be a part of this wonderful experience, feel free to follow along with everyone else. The Saint Anthony Society of Giovinazzo would love to have you join them in their annual celebration of and devotion to this saint of miracles. MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD SENIOR CLUB: Tuesday, May 17th, is our next MPB Senior Club luncheon. The luncheon takes place in the rectory dining room at 109 Mulberry Street and starts approximately 1:00 PM.
