Examining Black Women's Expressions of Selfhood and The
I DO NOT WEEP AT THE WORLD: Examining Black Women’s Expressions of Selfhood and the Revolutionary Act of Claiming Experiences and Identity by Nailah I. Herbert A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Sociology Middle Tennessee State University December 2019 Committee: Dr. Ashleigh E. McKinzie, Chair Dr. Vicky MacLean Dr. Roberta Chevrette ABSTRACT Black women’s interpretations of popular media are marked by a unique experience that is both racialized and gendered. In this study I explore Black women’s self-defined interpretations of media and literature that portray Black womanhood. Additionally, I consider how Black women’s perceptions of such portrayals affect their impressions about popular media in general. I addressed my research questions by conducting qualitative interviews with fifteen individuals who self-identified as Black women and a small focus group which contained three of the original interviewees. Six distinct themes emerged from this study: the magical Black character, the exotic Black woman, natural and diverse representations, filtering, media distrust, and consequences. The women in my study described their interpretations of popular depictions of Black womanhood in terms of the underlying perceptions that informed these depictions and the effects of these perceptions upon their daily interactions and their relationships with media and literature in general. They perceived these factors as interrelated and typically did not distinguish a fine line between the -
Brian Mcknight Evolution of a Man Album Download Better
brian mcknight evolution of a man album download Better. After the release of More Than Words, Brian McKnight established his own label, Brian McKnight Music, through the artist-friendly Kobalt Label Services, and went about making his third proper studio album outside the major-label system. Even more organic than what immediately preceded it, Better is filled with lively songs that are well crafted but don't seem the least bit fussed over. McKnight sounds like he's having as much fun as ever, gleefully flitting from falsetto disco-funk jams to lonesome, modern country-flavored ballads. It's all free and easy and allows for some whimsical moves, like the reggae backing on "Goodbye" and the tricky prog/pop-funk hybrid "Key 2 My Heart," the latter cut being where his love for Swedish trio Dirty Loops is most evident. There are occasional odd quirks, like the winking manner in which he slips "bitch" into the chorus of "Strut," and the way he throws a sharp curve, the tipsy newfound-love rocker "Just Enough," so early in the sequence. Several tracks do keep it simple and heartfelt, the qualities for which McKnight is most known, heard best on the humble title track, "Uh Oh Feeling," and "Like I Do." Mercifully, this material is a lot less erratic than the back cover typography (which displays McKnight's name as "B. McKnight," "B. Mcknight," "brian mcknight," "Brian McKnight," and "BRIAN MCKNIGHT"). Brian mcknight evolution of a man album download. It won't be long now until Brian McKnight unleashes his new album Evolution Of A Man (October 27th). -
African Diaspora Collective Action: Rituals, Runaways, and the Haitian Revolution
AFRICAN DIASPORA COLLECTIVE ACTION: RITUALS, RUNAWAYS, AND THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION By Crystal Nicole Eddins A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of African American & African Studies – Doctor of Philosophy Sociology – Doctor of Philosophy 2017 ABSTRACT AFRICAN DIASPORA COLLECTIVE ACTION: RITUALS, RUNAWAYS, AND THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION By Crystal Nicole Eddins The project is an interdisciplinary case study that couples an African Diaspora theoretical paradigm with concepts from social movements scholarship to explain the influence of Africa- inspired sacred rituals on oppositional consciousness and patterns of escape from enslavement – mawonaj – leading up to the Revolution. My data emerges from archival and secondary source research in France, the United States, and Haiti. I bring focus to the study of collective consciousness in two fields, African American & African Studies and Sociology, with attention to how consciousness was shaped by material conditions, was reinforced in spheres of interaction, and guided social action among early modern members of the African Diaspora in colonial Haiti (Saint Domingue). The first paper hypothesizes that in addition to being sacred events, ritual gatherings were simultaneously free spaces wherein rebels enhanced oppositional consciousness and solidarity by campaigning for liberation and seeking new mobilization recruits. Findings suggested that during African-Saint Dominguans’ gatherings at burial sites, in churches, and at nighttime calenda assemblies, they re-produced aspects of their religious cultures away from the observation of whites. Ritual free spaces allowed participants to reclaim personal and collective power by using sacred material artifacts; and to communicate seditious speech concerning freedom, independence, and the injustice of slavery. -
