Many towns and cities have areas, like the Northside, South Dallas, Harlem, etc. In Brunswick, Georgia there is Dixville, an area that was 100% minor- ity – Blacks, Puerto Ricans, etc. The area consisted of 12 streets, and still does. If you lived in Dixville, that community knew you and your family members. The streets in Dixville consist of Prince, London, Gordon, Albany, Johnston, Amherst, Cleaburne, Stonewall, Davis, Lee, George and MLK Boulevard, which was originally Cochran Avenue. The rail road track ran down Cochran Avenue. On Saturday, June 9, 2012, Dixville held its first Family Reunion, consisting of present and past resi- dents. Many have moved away but at the reunion, there were family members who still lived in the homes Wil Ellis Williams and Clarissa Davis left by great, great, great grand relatives. They say the major difference now is the streets are now all paved and the area that was once filled with water is present- ly the Dixville park, now known as the Inez Williams Mayor Bryan Thompson Park, on the corner of Gordon and Prince. Mrs. Williams once lived on the corner of Gordon and London, in one of the once most presti- gious homes with a beautiful yard, in the area. Because of her many contributions to the community, she was called “The Mayor of Dixville.” Many of her relatives still live in or still own homes in Dixville, including Clarissa Davis, whose Great, great grand- mother purchased the land where her home sits, more than a hundred years ago. Mrs. Inez Williams’ son, Wil Ellis Williams now lives in Jacksonville, attended the reunion celebration that consisted of more than 200 res- idents and former residents, as well as her grand niece who owns The Georgia Star newspaper and, Mayor Bryan Thompson. The mayor greeted the residents and posed for pictures as requested. Everyone was delight- ed about his presence since the racial makeup of Dixville has not changed. There was much food such as BarBQ ribs, chicken, crabs, shrimp, and hot dogs, salads, baked beans and slaw, brought in by the residents of Dixville and the Long Shoremen of Brunswick. The event was planned by committee members Denise Myers, Naomi Speakman, Terry Ward, Treneice Baggs, Kathyrn Hill, Regina Hobbs-Daniels, and Andrea Austin West. Congratulations everyone, you did a fantastic job and plans are already underway for the second Dixville Family Reunion. PAGE A-5 THE STAR JUNE 23, 2012 The First Dix-Ville Family Reunion

E kaabo (eh-kah-bow). Welcome.

Frances Bradley, Columnist [email protected] Volume Burks, Photographer Happy Fathers Day: The Tribute Continues. Pushing beyond the traditions that Hallmark helps to keep established, I tend to believe that every day should be treated as a special day – Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Kwanzaa, Christmas, etc. In that vain, I am con- tinuing my homage to men who I have observed as great examples of fatherhood. I count Volume Burks as my BFF (in my case, Brother Friend Forever). Our friendship dates back to the mid ‘80’s days when I owned a downtown travel agency and he worked for the State of Florida registering companies for the state’s minority vendors list. Later, when he and Ok Sun opened Kemet House, I was an avid supporter of their unique store and gallery that featured authentic African goods, art, and cultural programs. Today, Kemet House Productions is an event planning company (see the ad on this page). I wanted to introduce Volume to TALK OF THE TOWN! readers shortly after we began this venture August, 2011. While he enthu- siastically agreed to be TALK OF THE TOWN!’s official photographer, he was not as forthcoming to provide the information I want- ed in order to profile him. That’s because he is a modest man. Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs in Alabama, Volume is capa- ble of running any Fortune 500 company or the country, for that matter. Yet, in my estimation, he doesn’t have to be President or Vice- President of the United States. Volume knows that the real work gets done by the Chief of Staff, the power behind the power that EVERYONE has to go through. He’s content to be that “quietly effective” person behind the scenes. Volume is analytical, a problem solver. He can walk into chaos and carve out his own sphere of order. He’s reserved, but does not meet a stranger. He encourages positive thinking as a way of understanding people. He is creative and resource- ful. Move his cheese and you’ll find he has layers of the stuff in reserve. He creates gadgets that make me smile (like the paper towel rack in the trunk of the car. It should be one of those “As seen on TV” deals). He has an ironic sense of humor that makes me howl with laughter. But above all, Volume is an amazing father, husband, son, and brother. Family means everything to him. He is very proud of the accomplishments of his children, Seann and Chloe. He created an atmosphere that encouraged conversation, independent thinking, respect for each other and family. He and Ok Sun ensured that Seann and Chloe grew up knowing their family – Ok Sun’s in Starke and Missouri, and Volume’s in Uniontown, Alabama. I love to watch Volume and Seann communicate, father to son and son to father, noting the characteristics that son has picked up from father – a snicker, a smirk, the walk, the interest in all things entrepreneurial. Chloe is the emotional twin of her father – sensitive, intuitive, and reserved. There is no doubt that Volume would do anything for his children. One memory that stands out is the time we attend- ed a Kirk Whalum concert during the Florida Black Expo. As an introduction to a song, Whalum talked about the impor- tance of fathers to the family. He asked for fathers in the audience to raise their hands if they would give their lives for their children. I watched Volume’s hand go straight up, without hesitation. He had a look of resolute on his face, one that said, “I would do it without a second thought.” Volume, I salute you as a real father, real man 365 days of the year. Jacksonville press was treated to a momentous occasion one day after Juneteenth when The Most Rev. Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa introduced the Winds of Change Economic Empowerment Initiative. The project consists of a partnership with Royal Bafokeng Holdings, N.G. Wade Investment Company & African Business Development Group to form a $5 billion 100 percent black-owned investment company. The indaba, or initiative is the first global business venture of its kind, which was created to combat the disen- franchisement that occurred during the period of colonial rule in South Africa. The initiative employs sustainable and profitable economic development through business ventures with an African, community-based character. The Archbishop is now travelling throughout the U.S. calling upon various members of the black community to invest in business ownership in and around the African Diaspora. His objectives for the economic indaba are as fol- lows: 1). To empower the African Diaspora by providing jobs and investing in our communities 2). To provide coaching and training to indigenous populations seeking to own and grow their own businesses 3). To create and establish lasting partnerships and business ownership among indigenous populations 4). To remain a good steward in order to make this project run efficiently and effectively through hard work, honesty, and financial accountability Archbishop Makgoba stated that, “On the eve of Juneteenth, this moment will be another turning point in his- tory for the African Diaspora in the U.S. and abroad. “ The Winds of Change Initiative remains dedicated to reinvest- ment in the sub-continent and other eligible regions with large Diasporic populations. Raymond and Mary Harris, the couple who faced eviction and the possibility of being involved in a multi-million dollar dis- crimination scandal with SunTrust Bank are continuing to hold off hope that they will return home soon. The traumatized couple in their mid-70’s have been over- whelmed with calls ever since their article appeared in our newspa- per last week. “I’m so glad we agreed to do the interview,” said Mrs. Harris. “As a result of our coming forth, others in our position and those worse off have contacted us to render words of encouragement and to express support for Neighbor To Neighbor. We need to come together as one in order to make ourselves heard and show that we will not be taken advantage of.” The couple are not dissuaded from continuing their fight and they are now arming themselves with every document they can lay hands and have been going through the Glynn County court system to see that justice is served. According to court documents, communications with the bank and appraisals obtained by our newspaper, Raymond and Mary Harris’ assets totaled $1.3 million. This included their home at $500,000, office building at $150,000, raw land worth $565,000 (no lien), rental property $52,000 and CD at $39,000. “We asked for a $20,000 loan, they [the bank] used all of our Raymond and Mary Harris in front of their dream home prior to it being foreclosed. assets and our attorney for the closing,” said Mrs. Harris. “They (Photo by Angela Favors-Morrell) tricked us into signing away all of our assets. The loan was over col- lateralized by $827,000.” Mr. Harris said that they went to great lengths to seek assistance in this intricate matter but were met with challenges. “We sought help from an attorney in Savannah,” said Mrs. Harris showing us the letter. “He did contact SunTrust but to no avail. They did not attempt to correct the loan. We also sought help from the Attorney General of the State of Georgia. His Assistant attorney General sent our complaint to the Federal Reserve Consumer Help who found SunTrust guilty of discrimination. However, when we sought help from the Georgia State Attorney General on May 9,2012, he refused to answer the subpoena and squashed it in the court.” The couple said that the justice system has been failing them and other people they know in the same situation. “We are totally ignored in the courts,” said Mrs. Harris. “We have pleadings pending in State Court, Superior Court and the U. S. District Court. The judges, attorneys and banks just ignores us like we have no Constitutional Rights. We have no rights!” “When we sought help from an attorney in another county and the court threatened him with sanctions and he had to back off and show cause why he should not be sanc- tioned,” she added. The Harrises have also had contact with an employee of Millennium Security Company, which stood on guard to ensure that they were only allowed to retrieve their belong- ings between 9am and 5pm when they were evicted. The couple has lost several items including appliances like a refrigerator. And they said that the attorney for SunTrust has refused to return it. “That employee said that he would swear in court that SunTrust Bank sent a crew of people to pick up all of our belongings,” said Mrs. Harris. “They did not give the name of the company and called themselves the "Cleanup Crew". “The whole thing is just one big confused mess,” a frustrated Mrs. Harris continued. “We asked them not to use the home or office building, the totally ignored us. Our story is someone else’s warning. I wish everyone who has been foreclosed on to read the case regarding U.S. Bank v. Antonio Ibnez. Mr. Ibanez was foreclosed on but the court determined U.S. Bank was not the rightful owner of his property when it was foreclosed on. After 2 years Mr. Ibanez's property was awarded back to him because U.S. Bank had no standing in ownership in his property. We are maintaining hope that we will have what is rightfully ours returned as well.” Stay tuned for the conclusion of this series in next week’s issue. Both teams have won NCAA National Championships in men’s basketball. “We’re honored to take part in such a special event, and one that brings recognition to the United States Navy and Marine Corps,” said University of Florida head coach Billy Donovan. “The U.S. Navy has a long and storied history in the city of Jacksonville, and this should be a truly special night. According to Forbes’ list of highest paid athletes, the boxer earned $40 million in his fight with Ortiz and $45 million in his fight with Cotto totaling $85 million. Golfer Tiger Woods who has been at the top for 11 years is now sitting in third place with $59.4 million. In fourth place is NBA MVP LeBron James with $53 million. Other athletes making the list included Kobe Bryant and Usain Bolt. Asia Cannon of Ribault High School expressed her desire to be- come a journalist. She requested to get experience through the city’s oldest, largest and most read African American newspaper. Asia said she expected to learn but she did not expect what happened during her first two days. The morning started with her learning about invoices but the af- ternoon took her away from the facility where she was able to person- ally meet and shake hands with The Most Reverend Thabo Makgoba, Christella Lewis & State Rep Mia Jones Angelican Archbishop of Cape Town, South African. Archbishop Mak- goba took the place of Archbishop Tutu and is the youngest archbishop to hold such a position. Her assignment was to write a story about the Andrea Ortiz & Angela Spears conference. The following afternoon, Asia and a student from Ed White High School, Christella Lewis, were privileged to go with Clara McLaughlin, owner, and her assistant, Andea Ortiz, a psychologist from San Diego, California. Andrea has worked with The Star for many events. They were scheduled to go to Jacksonville’s City Hall. The young ladies knew Mayor Brown & Andrea Ortiz where City Hall was but never dreamed of visiting it. They were sched- uled to meet with Angela Spears, Deputy Director for Mayor Alvin Brown who herself is a trained journalist. Ms. Spears talked with them about her experiences as a journalist and news anchor, and the many State Rep Mia Jones and Asia Cannon roads they may have to travel. And then, the girls had a shock of their life. There was a knock on the door and to their amazement, Mayor Alvin Brown came in and greeted them. You would have thought a celebrity movie or music star had walked in the door by the look on their faces. They were awed that the mayor would personally greet and en- courage them. To top it off, as Ms. Spears was showing them around City Hall, they met former City Councilwoman and present Florida State Representative Mia Jones before looking in on a City Council Committee meeting. Angela Spears and Christella Lewis That evening, Christella was able to go to the radio station to witness The Florida Star’s live radio show, Impact, where Ms. Ortiz talked about bulling. These students say they are ready to continue their desire to get in the media.
