Harry Watters-Syllabus with Curriculum Benchmarks Applied Trombone Syllabus with Curriculum Benchmarks Harry Watters, 571-251-9041 [email protected] Goals & Objectives • Convey positive and relaxed but disciplined learning techniques to my students. • Follow a holistic, results-based approach, encouraging students to stay healthy, positive and on-task. Creative learning is achieved when the process is natural, effortless and filled with exuberance. • Prepare students for a life in music by addressing all areas of the industry while emphasizing the art of trombone. • Develop a well-rounded student with polished technical proficiency and advanced creative output. • Encourage students to become accustomed to self-examination to ensure that they are prepared to continue advancing once lessons are completed. Lesson Expectations • Arrive to each weekly lesson fully prepared and warmed-up with all lesson materials. • Progress continually from week to week, following pre-assigned benchmarks. • Expected practice time is from 1 1/2-3 hours per day, preferably done in smaller segments to ensure high levels of concentration. • Regularly record your practice sessions, listening back with a pencil in hand. • Your jury constitutes 40% of the final grade. Studio Policy • Students are expected to attend lessons at the assigned time…be punctual. • Cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance of the lesson in order to reschedule. If the lesson in cancelled with fewer than 24 hours notice, rescheduling will be done at my discretion. • If I need to miss a lesson, I will reschedule. • Students will be expected to enter all applicable ITA and ETW competitions. I met him once, many years ago, at the Molde International Jazz Festival. He was a very kind man, and when he realized I was doing some useful work on ja zz tenor saxophone, he invited me to his hotel room for whisky. We had a very nice time together in the light summer night of Norway! Early history: His brother, a saxophonist, gave Buddy an alto in 1925. Two years later began gigging with McCloud's Night Owls (led by his cousin, trumpeter Roy McCloud). In 1929 played for several months in Wichita Falls with the St. Louis Merrymakers, later that year joined Troy Floyd's Band in San Antonio. Briefly with Gene Coy's Band, then with Terrence Holder's 12 Clouds of Joy from 1930-33. Worked with E. J. Malone and his Rhythm Kings (early 1933), Wesley Smiths' Band, ‘Tan Town Topics’, and Ethel May's Band before joining Count Basie in Little Rock, Arkansas (ca. July 1934). From late 1934 until early summer 1935 with Andy Kirk, played with band at Wiley College, Texas, then long spell with Nat Towles until joining Count Basie in spring 1939. Remained with Basie until September 1948, brief return in early 1949, then for the rest of that year worked mostly with Hot Lips Page, occasionally with Lucky Millinder.

Earlier this year, a trio version of Reverso released The Melodic Line. DownBeat met with Keberle via videoconference, as he commented on tracks from his home in New York’s Catskill Mountains.     1 The TENORSAX of FRANK WELLINGTON WESS Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Sept. 9, 2020 2 Born: Kansas City, Missouri, Jan. 4, 1922 Died: Oct. 30, 2013 Introduction: Oslo Jazz Circle always loved the Basie orchestra, no matter what time, and of course we became familiar with Frank Wess’ fine tenorsax playing. My own real ear opener however was the Joe Turner session on Atlantic from 1956. Early history: First instrument altosax which he played in local band in Oklahoma. On tenor in Washington with Bill Baldwin and in the house band at Howard Theatre. On tour with Blanche Calloway and army service 1941-44. After discharge, with Billy Eckstine. Then with Eddie Heywood and Lucky Millinder. One year with Bull Moose Jackson. Back to Washington and studies on flute 1949. From June 1953 to August 1964 he was a member of Count Basie’s orchestra. Message: I have had to simplify the presentation of Count Basie sessions, it seemed to serve no purpose of going through all Chris Sheridan. However this means that many sessions with FW must have been omitted, and it is not unlikely that some of these will or have already appeared on CD. Also,I admit that it is not always easy to hear the difference between Frank Wess and Frank Foster, at least for my modest ears.     1 The TENORSAX of SELDON POWELL Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Feb. 16, 2021 2 Born: Lawrenceville, Virginia, Nov. 15, 1928 Died: New York, Jan. 25, 1997 Introduction: I remember very well our first encounter with Seldon Powell; through the exciting 1956 Atlantic album “Boss Of The Blues” with Joe Turner. We enjoyed his music very much from the start, and realizing the enormous number of recording sessions he had taken part in, we called him a ‘tenorsax potato’, suitable for all jazz dishes. It was meant as an honour. In our opinion, SP did never get the recognition he deserved History: First musical studies at Brooklyn and New York Conservatories 1947-49 and graduated at Juillard 1957. First job with the band of Betty Mays 1949, Tab Smith at Savoy Ballroom 1949 and Dec. 1949 with Lucky Millinder until 1951. Did army service 1951-52 playing in bands in France and Germany where he was stationed. After discharge returned to New York and played with Sy Oliver, Erskine Hawkins, Neal Hefti, Louis Bellson and Don Redman 1952-55. Studied at Juillard. In 1958 he travelled to Europe with Benny Goodman’s band, and then he played briefly with Woody Herman. In the 1960s he worked chiefly for ABC TV but also recorded heavily. His numerous recordings as a studio musician include many made in the late 1960s and early 1970s with soul and soul-jazz musicians, including Groove Holmes (ca. 1973) and sessions in the big bands that accompanied Gato Barbieri (1974) and Anthony Braxton and Dizzy Gillespie (both 1976).

Woods _______________________________ Co-Adviser School of Music ABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to identify and assess methods of teaching and learning jazz trombone improvisation that have been implemented by jazz trombone professors. Its intent was to describe learning procedures and areas of trombone study. A survey instrument was designed after interviewing 20 professional jazz trombonists. The survey was pilot-tested (n = 9) and adjustments were made. Jazz trombone professors (n = 377) were sent questionnaires, with a response rate of 28 percent after an additional reminder to all and follow-up phone calls to one-third of the sample. Of the 106 total respondents, 58 were deemed to be eligible participants as both trombonists and as teachers of jazz improvisation. Three areas were explored: 1) early stages of development, 2) teaching, and 3) trombone technique. Data showed that most of the professors (77%) had learned to improvise between 7th-12th grades. They identified the most important method of learning for themselves as listening and playing-along with recordings. Learning occurred on their own for many, though college also had an impact. Schools (K-12) were not strongly rated as being helpful in the trombonists learning to improvise (2.49 on a scale of one to five), though schools did provide many jazz performance experiences.
