Muito obrigada! iv Preface Preface This PhD thesis, written as a cumulative work, has been accomplished at the Department of Palynology and Climate Dynamics at the University of Göttingen between March 2007 and December 2010. The thesis is composed of three different parts: a general introduction in Chapter 1, three independent articles presented in Chapter 2 to 4, and a synthesis in Chapter 5 integrating conclusions of the previous chapters together with a discussion. A fourth article in which the co-author Vivian Jeske-Pieruschka has written the palynological part on basis of data presented in Chapter 4 is attached in Appendix E. Tables and figures are inserted directly in the text following his statement on the text and enumerated separately for each chapter. Each article has been submitted separately for publication in international scientific journals and is arranged according to the layout of the journal. The reference style also follows the formatting rules of the designated journal except for Chapter 1. A summary of the thesis in English, German and Portuguese is given at the end. A complete list and some illustrations of identified pollen and spore types as well as complete pollen diagrams of the studied sediment records are included in the appendices. v CHAPTER 1 General Introduction 1 Chapter 1: Introduction 1.1. The Atlantic Forest Biome The mega-diverse country of Brazil encompasses six major biomes: Amazon, Cerrado, Caatinga, Atlantic Forest, Pantanal and Pampa (IBGE, 2004). The Atlantic Forest biome, considered one of the 25 global biodiversity hotspots (e.g. Myers et al., 2000; Tabarelli et al., 2005), comprises one of the most important tropical forests world-wide. A completely randomized experimental design was used with three replicates, and the plot consisted of four plants. In morphological characterization, qualitative and quantitative descriptors of leaves were evaluated. Genetic divergence among the specimens was determined by the Tocher clustering method and the hierarchical UPGMA. There is genetic variation among specimens evaluated, which was also expressed by the variability of colors, shapes, and sizes of the leaves. The Tocher clustering method and the hierarchical UPGMA were effective in differentiation of the specimens from multi-categorical qualitative descriptors, as the Tocher method grouped the accessions in two groups and the UPGMA in seven different groups. We highlight the accessions SSV 09 and SSV 10 as exhibiting the highest mean values in weekly leaf growth and in leaf height, important characteristics for local sale and for export. This study is aimed to analyze the pollen morphology of angiosperm species present in the study area of the “Unidade de Conservação Parque Estadual do Espinilho”. Botanical material was collected, and herbaria were consulted to obtain pollen material, processed by acetolysis technique. Pollen grains of the 45 species are presented (one magnoliid, five monocots and 39 eudicots). Among the species are Prosopis affinis Spreng., Prosopis nigra Hieron., Vachellia caven (Molina) Seigler & Ebinger and Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco Schltdl that characterize the formation “Savana Estépica Parque” . The results of this work contribute to studies of Quaternary palynology under development in “Savana Estépica Parque” vegetation , besides enabling the determination of the areas once cov ered by the “Savana Estépica Parque” in the past, in Rio Grande do Sul, since it is estimated that the area of occurrence of this vegetation decreased significantly from the beginning of Holocene. Pollenkitt ropes were observed and reported for the first time on pollen grains of N. schomburgkii, Ericaceae. With TEM these ropes show lipidic (“pollenkitt-like”) electron density but also show some resistance to acetolysis. (Ericaceae: Vaccinioideae: Vaccinieae) is a genus composed of five species of Neotropical blueberries (1 – 2) and it is endemic to the Guayana highland of Venezuela and adjacent Guyana (3 – 4). Maguire, Steyermark and Luteyn (3) are the only workers who have previously studied the pollen morphology of four species of this genus including N. schomburgkii, under both light (LM) and scanning electron microscopes (SEM). They reported that pollen tetrads of the genus Notopora were 42 – 56µm in size under LM, without viscin threads, exine sculpturing rugulate/verrucate becoming psilate along the aperture margins and at distal poles.

Paper / Article Miss Carviel is representing the Ontario Region for this contest. The Undergraduate Botanical Presentation Award was created in 2003 by the CBA to encourage undergraduate students to pursue graduate research in botany and to enhance the visibility of the Association. The program offers annually one award of $200.00 for one of the undergraduate conferences/meetings in Biology for each of the five (5) regions of Canada: Atlantic region, Qué bec, Ontario, Prairies and Territories, and British Columbia. The phytosociological structure of upper montane grasslands (high altitude grasslands) was studied in six subranges of Serra do Mar. Throughout 324 (1 m2) plot samples, we identified 195 taxa out of 280 taxa previously found in a floristic survey. Besides the general analysis of these communities, five physiognomies (synusiae) of these grasslands were previously determined based upon the species with greater cover. Cryptangium triquetrum and Croton mullerianus had the highest phytosociological importance value among the upper montane grasslands sampled in the present study. The first species was the most important of the grassy physiognomy of all sampled subranges and the second one of the shrubby physiognomy within three subranges. Chusquea pinifolia, Machaerina austrobrasiliensis, Deschampsia caespitosa, Gleichenella pectitata, Tibouchina dubia, Xyris stenophylla, Eryngium koehnearum and Eriochrysis holcoides were also structurally important. Although considerable species richness has been observed, the dominance of one or few species in the community was common in all subranges and physiognomies. In a brief comparison with upper montane vegetation studies (mainly on rocky outcrops) carried out in Southeastern Brazil, a low sharing of species was verified. Furthermore, the scarcity of studies in the literature regarding floristic and sociological structure of upper montane grasslands hampers a deeper analysis at level of species.
