IRB protocol # 13090619 iii ABSTRACT They Have To See Us: an Ethnography of Deaf People in Tanzania Jessica Lee Department of Anthropology Thesis directed by Professor J. Terrence McCabe This dissertation explores the relationship between Tanzanian deaf people and mainstream society, as well as dynamics within deaf communities. I argue that deaf people who do participate in NGOs and other organizations that provide support to deaf people, do so strategically. In order to access services and improve their own lives and the lives of their families, deaf people in Tanzania move comfortably and fluidly between identity groups that are labeled as disabled or only as deaf. Through intentional use of the interventions provided by various organizations, deaf people are able to carve out deaf spaces that act as places for transmission of information, safe areas to learn and use sign language, and sites of network and community development among other deaf people. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Santa Barbara Sisterhood on the Frontier: Catholic Women Religious in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1850- 1925 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology by Jamila Jamison Sinlao Committee in charge: Professor Denise Bielby, Chair Professor Jon Cruz Professor Simonetta Falasca-Zamponi Professor John Mohr December 2018 The dissertation of Jamila Jamison Sinlao is approved. There, the “Mercy spirit”—one of hospitality and generosity, resilience and faith—was illustrated by the many stories we heard about Catherine McAuley and Mary Baptist Russell. The questions that guide this project grew out of my Mercy experience, and so I would like to thank the many teachers, both lay and religious, who nurtured my interest in this fascinating slice of history. This project would not have been possible without the archivists who not only granted me the privilege to access their collections, but who inspired me with their passion, dedication, and deep historical knowledge. I am indebted to Chris Doan, former archivist for the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Sister Marilyn Gouailhardou, RSM, regional community archivist for the Sisters of Mercy Burlingame; Sister Margaret Ann Gainey, DC, archivist for the Daughters of Charity, Seton Provincialate; Kathy O’Connor, archivist for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, California Province; and Sister Michaela O’Connor, SHF, archivist for the Sisters of the Holy Family. -

Band the Rank Strangers, Pete Vendettuoli
Roots Report: On the Road Again Okee dokee folks … I am on my way back north going 70mph along Route 95. No, I am not driving. My girlfriend is. I have written my column in odd places before, but never in a moving car. We just spent a week at her father’s in South Carolina. It was interesting to be there considering I am not a fan of the south nor am I a fan of the hot weather. The temperature averaged ABOVE 95 degrees the whole time that we were there. Thank goodness for air conditioning. It took two days of driving to travel the 1,100 miles. We went the long way around and down in order to avoid cities and traffic. No, we weren’t on the lam! Route 95 tends to attract traffic, which we are hitting only 20 miles into our return journey. GRRRRR!!! It seemed an odd time to be visiting SC in light of the church shootings and Confederate flag controversy. Honestly, other than the news on TV, we didn’t hear anything about those issues. In fact, I didn’t see one Confederate flag anywhere. We were kind of in a bubble. We stayed at a gated community for people 55 and over. It was a HUGE place that felt like a small town. They have their own rules and security force. Oh, and alligators! The gators will just hang out in people’s backyards or along the side of the road depending on the time of day. Unfortunately, I only saw the top of one’s head and another one swimming away along a drainage ditch. -
Sammy Brue to Release Debut Album I Am Nice This Friday
SAMMY BRUE TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM I AM NICE THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 16th, 2017 VIA NEW WEST RECORDS PASTE MAGAZINE PREMIERES FULL ALBUM STREAM TOUR DATES WITH KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD, ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO, LINDI ORTEGA, AND TYLER CHILDERS ANNOUNCED Sammy Brue is set to release his debut album I Am Nice this Friday, June 16th, 2017 via New West Records. The 12-song set was produced by John Paul White of the Civil Wars and Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes and recorded at their Sun Drop Sound studio in Florence, Alabama. Already hailed as an “American prodigy” by Rolling Stone, the just-turned 16-year-old is a remarkable young talent. His catchy compositions embody the sort of wisdom, empathy and insight that is usually associated with more experienced songwriters and has caught the attention of The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The Fader, and more. Paste Magazine is premiering I Am Nice in full ahead of its release this Friday. They have called the album a “marvelous debut record” and it can be heard in its entirety HERE. Vice’s music site Noisey previously premiered the video for album single “I’m Not Your Man,” stating, “...the future of Americana/Folk/Country is in very young, very capable hands,” and continuing, “...where Brue stands out isn't just his age, but his razor-sharp songwriting.” The clip was shot at the landmark Los Angeles book store The Bodhi Tree and also produced by Black Balloon as well. Watch it HERE. Additionally, Rolling Stone Country premiered the video for album opener “I Know,” which can be seen HERE. -

Stream Amy Cook's Gorgeous New Album 'Summer Skin'
Stream Amy Cook’s Gorgeous New Album ‘Summer Skin’ 08.22.12 Marissa G. Muller “I try to be bleak and hopeless but it never works out,” says Austin, Texas-based singer/songwriter Amy Cook, letting out a slight chuckle. The alt-Americana musician maintains a level-headed optimism instead on her mellow slow-burners, like “Waiting 4 the World 2 End,” the opener of her latest album Summer Skin. “That song is an affirmation like, ‘Let’s not sit around and wait for the world to end,’” she adds. Cook’s done anything but, though, in her decade-spanning solo career, where she’s written songs that have appeared on primetime TV shows like Dawson’s Creek, Veronica Mars and The L Word and collaborated with people like famed cowpunk Alejandro Escovedo — whom she met after moving to Austin from California — and Ben Kweller, among others. For Summer Skin, she’s brought in an impressive group of contributors that include producer Craig Street — who worked on Norah Jones’ debut Come Away With Me — Robert Plant, Patty Griffin, Kweller, and a backing band that consists of Me’Shell N’Degeocello, David Garza, Chris Bruce, and Jonathan Wilson. “We recorded the whole record live in about five days with the band in Los Angeles and went back to Austin to do some background vocals and some overdubs,” she says. “That’s when Ben and Robert and Patti came in. Robert had known my songs for a while — [because] Patty, his girlfriend, is a good friend of mine — and [when] he heard “Airplane Driver” he really liked it and said, “Oh, I can hear some sort of mantra bits at the end.” So, he and Patti sang on the end of it. -
