ABSTRACT Mongoose is a common name for 29 to 34 species in 14 genera of the family Herpestidae which are found in vast areas of southwestern Asia, especially southern Iran. Anatomical and morphological studies of the brain have always been of interest to the researchers in the field of anatomy, due to its high importance in various fields of veterinary and zoology. Because of the lack of information about the brain structure in wild carnivores, the present study was conducted to better understand the morphological features in Indian grey mongoose. For this purpose, 4 carcasses of adult mongooses were used. They were found in different areas of Fars province. The mongooses had died due to natural causes. The brain was carefully separated from the skull and the measurements and observations were made on different parts of it. In this study, it wa found that the brain's structure has an ovoid appearance. Also, distinguished olfactory bulbs, deep transverse and longitudinal fissures, and relatively large cerebellar vermis were observed. Accord- ing to the current study, it can be concluded that the anatomical features of the brain in the mongoose are similar to those of other carnivores and are in perfect harmony with the sensory and motor capabilities of the animal. -

Wildlife SOS SAVING INDIA’S WILDLIFE WILDLIFE SOS wildlifesos.org 1 www.wildlifesos.org WHO WE ARE Wildlife SOS was established in 1995 to protect India’s wildlife and wilderness from human exploitation. We are focused on threatened and endangered species like the Asian elephant and sloth bear, but also operate a leopard rescue center and run a 24-hour animal rescue service that provides aid to all creatures great and small — from injured turtles and birds to monkeys, tigers, and deer. Our mission involves three main branches: Welfare, Conservation, and Research. 1. WELFARE Wildlife SOS’s efforts to protect wildlife involve lifetime, high-quality care for animals who cannot return to the wild, medical treatment for animals that can, rescue services for captive animals in abusive settings, and advocacy to prevent animals from being exploited for entertainment. Wildlife SOS eradicated the cruel “dancing bear” practice in India, and we have been actively rescuing captive elephants from terrible situations (see below). Success Stories: Laxmi and Raj Bear Laxmi once begged on noisy and crowded city streets, morbidly obese from a diet of tourist junk food. Today, our good-natured girl is pampered at our sanctuary, feasting on a variety of healthier options, including her favorite: apples. Another success story: Raj, aka India’s last “dancing bear.” Back in 2009, we rescued and united Raj with hundreds of other bears we have saved from the cruel “dancing” trade. We still care for Raj as well more than 600 other bears. And we also provide training to their former owners to ensure that they can feed their families without ever exploiting an animal again. -

Introduction Biodiversity reflects the potential of a regional ecosystem. Biota of a particular area is considered as indicators of the environment as they quickly respond not only to one environmental factor but also an interactive group of factors. These communities influence and react sensitively to changes in the balance of environmental stresses. Conservation of the biodiversity is essential for the sustainable development. Before starting any Environmental Impact Assessment study, it is necessary to identify the baseline of relevant environmental parameters which are likely to be affected as a result of the operation of the proposed project. A similar approach has been adopted for conducting the study on biological environment for this project. Both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems have been studied to understand the biological environment nearby the project site. The study was conducted in the project area to assess all possible consequences on the biological environment. The present study is highlighting the various issues pertaining to floristic diversity and the faunal wealth in the core area i.e. Expansion of Corporate Office Building at Sector-16A, Film City, Noida (U.P.) and buffer zone i.e. area within 10 km radius. 1.1.1. Description of Study Area The present project proposes modification of the Expansion of Corporate Office Building which is located Sector-16A, Film City, Noida (U.P.) under the Seismic Zone –IV as per IS 1893 (Part I): 2002 (indicating high damage risk zone). The buildings will be designed as earthquake resistant and comply with IS specifications. -

Other than the tigers we had great views from the fort and seeing the vultures hover at eye level was exciting. It was overall a great safari experience. Day 0 Friday 12th March Travel from the UK Day 1 Saturday 13th March Having met at the airport, we checked into the ever-so-stylish Ashok Country Hotel where there was time to wash and change and have a hearty meal. We then set out for the station to catch the train. Day 2 Sunday 14th March Our train rolled into the Katni junction at 4.50am. We were met by our driver at the station and set out on a beautiful journey to Bandhavgarh National Park, travelling through beautiful forests and great sceneries. On arrival at the camp we got a much-deserved cup of tea and some hot breakfast to go with it. After breakfast we took a short walk around the camp just to get our orientation. -

120 Indian Birds VOL. 15 NO. 4 (PUBL. 16 DECEMBER 2019) Correspondence Painted Spurfowl from the Chota Nagpur Plateau area of West Bengal The Painted Spurfowl Galloperdix lunulata inhabits rocky slopes and scrub habitats of dry forests, from central to southern India, including the Aravalli Range of Rajasthan up to the Ayodhya Range of West Bengal (Ball 1874). Historically, it was recorded at Rajmahal Hill, Manbhum, Lohardaga, Sirguja, Jashpur, Udaipur, Sambalpur, northwards of Mahanadi, Raipur, Nowagarh, Karial, and along the Godavari Valley (Ball 1874, 1878) on the Chotanagpur Plateau. But there is no record of the species (Chakraborty 2011) from a large portion of this important ecogeographic region (Kumar & Rawat 2008). We report the presence of this species in the Chotanagpur region on the basis of several sight records supported by photographs taken on three occasions [163]. Fig. 1. Tigers and Taj Mahal Nature Manitoba India 13th to 24th March 2019 (12 days) Trip Report Tiger by Ansar Khan Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Adam Walleyn Rockjumper Wildlife Tours View more tours to India Trip Report – RWT India - Tigers and Taj Mahal 2019 2 Tour Summary The tour began at a comfortable hotel in New Delhi, close to the airport but secluded from the hustle and bustle of everyday life on the streets of one of the world’s largest cities. Most of us arrived a bit early and had ample time to bird the grounds of the hotel, where numerous species were to be found, and included colourful Rose-ringed Parakeets, Brahminy Starlings and noisy Jungle Babbler. A flowering silk cotton tree was particularly productive for the birds. We even got our first mammal of the trip with a Five-striped Palm Squirrel. This common and confiding species would in fact be seen on every single day of the tour! Early the next morning, we headed through the crowded streets of Delhi to the train station. Our train was a bit delayed, but while we waited a Rhesus Macaque entertained us with its antics. In India, humans and wildlife live alongside in a way that is not often seen in many countries! Not much later, we were boarding our train and heading south and west from the capital and into the state of Tiger Cub by Ansar Khan Rajasthan. As we watched the fascinating countryside go by, we got brief views of Nilgai, or Blue Bull, from the train, along with a couple of pairs of Sarus Cranes. -
