We are a safe space for anyone to discuss anything, including sexuality, gender identity, sexual health and emotional wellbeing. We support people to explore the right options for themselves. We aspire to a society where all LGBT+ people are informed and empowered. Switchboard’s values We are: non-judgemental inclusive committed empowering supportive informed Switchboard LGBT+ 2 Co-Chairs’ report 31 March 2019 This year has been a full one for Switchboard. Some highlights include changes made to the co-chair eligibility roles; new partnerships fostered; and our continuing work as a Board and as an organisation to make Switchboard ready for the future. We began the year considering the options for volunteers interested in leading the organisation. Our memberships voted to expand the co-chair roles from being only male and female so that trans and non-binary volunteers now are able to lead the organisation as co-chairs. This helps Switchboard live our values of being inclusive, empowering and supportive. We rebranded our website making it more up-to-date for both our own volunteers and for people outside Switchboard. Our website is now more modern and user-friendly for our volunteers, as well as more welcoming and easier to navigate for people outside Switchboard visiting us as service users, donors or potential volunteers. We built new relationships and continued fostering existing ones both inside and outside the LGBT+ communities. Our corporate partnerships included ones with Accenture, Mars, Skittles and Costa Coffee. We began an exciting relationship with design agency RANKIN with plans for a future large- scale publicity campaign to get our name and number known all around the country. Within the helpline sector, we established a relationship with the mental health charity SHOUT enabling us to signpost mental health crisis support to callers outside our usual operating hours. Within the LGBT+ communities we continue to build relationships with other LGBT+ sector organisations, including Consortium and others. We continue to look to make new connections with groups and organisations. Switchboard was again represented at Trans Pride, UK Black Pride, and this year also attended Prides in Glasgow, Belfast and the Isle of Wight. We were delighted to receive a Pride in London Parade Team Award 2018 in recognition for the way in which Switchboard fully embraced the spirit of Pride in London. As a volunteer-led organisation, we know that we need an engaged volunteer community and a Board that is focused on the future strategic direction if we are to effectively meet the needs of our service users. Part of this strategic direction has been introducing and updating a risk register. This helps us mitigate against potential risk in areas such as financial oversight, building maintenance, staffing, and data confidentiality. Last year we defined a Switchboard Mission Statement and Values, and this year continued to refine our Values by agreeing as an organisation concrete ways we can live these Values within Switchboard. From a financial perspective this year we have benefitted again from legacy donations, regular donations and one-off fund-raising events and regular bucket rattles. Our Finance & Audit Committee ensures that there is oversight on how these funds are invested and spent. Switchboard LGBT+ 3 Co-Chairs’ report 31 March 2019 We continued to investigate options to allow these funds to generate income. Work we’ve done previously on re-purposing part of our building continues to enable us to rent out part of our building which generates a sustainable source of income for Switchboard. In our Board Away Days and in work we did with volunteers at General Meetings we continued to investigate what Switchboard’s role might be within the LGBT+ charity sector of the future. We offer calm words when they’re needed most on the phone, by email and instant messaging, while looking with optimism to what Switchboard’s future might be in 2024 and beyond. This year one of our co-chairs is stepping down and we continued the work we started last year on succession planning within our Board of Directors by encouraging Directors to consider standing as co-chair to lead Switchboard into a new phase of its development. Signed by the Co-Chairs N Walker P Zacaroli Date of approval: 21.11.2019 Switchboard LGBT+ 4 Directors’ report 31 March 2019 The Directors present their report together with the financial statements of Switchboard LGBT+ (Switchboard) (the charitable company) for the year ended 31 March 2019. Switchboard LGBT+ operates under the name Switchboard. This report has been prepared in accordance with Part 8 of the Charities Act 2011 and constitutes a directors’ report for the purpose of company legislation. The reference and administrative information set out on pages 1 and 2 forms part of this report. The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements, the charitable company’s Memorandum and Articles of Association, applicable laws and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102). Overall objective The charitable company's principal objective is: to provide a safe space for anyone to discuss anything, including sexuality, gender identity, sexual health and emotional wellbeing. We support people to explore the right options for themselves. However, the overall social context for delivering this objective has changed hugely since Switchboard started operating in March 1974, as has the language we use to express the organisation’s aims. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT+) people have many more rights than in 1974, and are often living more open lives. Switchboard itself is a more inclusive organisation than it was then, embracing the diversity of LGBT+ communities. What remains the same is the charitable company's original aim: to provide a confidential source of support and information to people who are or may be discriminated against, isolated or ignored. Recognising that LGBT+ people often struggle to come to terms with their sexuality, the charitable company supports anybody questioning their sexual or gender orientation. Given the personal situations of many LGBT+ people, Switchboard receives calls from the families and friends of LGBT+ people regardless of their own sexual or gender orientation; and from professionals working in agencies with LGBT+ clients, who may be unclear of how sexual or gender orientation may affect their clients’ needs. Switchboard is achieving public benefit through our work in providing a helpline service by telephone, instant messaging and email and acting as a source of web-based information, services which may be accessed by any member of the public. Indeed, Switchboard remains the UK’s primary source of telephone support to LGBT+ people, and all those with issues or questions about sexual and gender orientation. We are a leading source of information on, and signposting to, LGBT+ organisations, services, venues and activities across the UK and beyond; we offer emotional support to callers who may have a whole range of issues; and we raise awareness of, and provide information about, safer sex and sexual health to all our callers where appropriate. Switchboard LGBT+ 5 Directors’ report 31 March 2019 Overall objective (continued) All the Directors are conversant with the Charity Commission’s guidelines concerning charities and public benefit and have given consideration to them when assessing the charity’s aims and planning the work of the members of the charity. The Directors believe that they have given due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Commission and have complied fully with the duty in Section 4 of Part 1 of the Charities Act 2011. Review of the year The charitable company has had another successful year, with service users increasing on the prior year as we have seen an uplift in instant messaging and email usage. A number of partnerships have been secured in the year which continue to provide the charitable company with the additional funding required to take on larger projects outside of our core services.

    The LGBT Health and Inclusion Project Locally Available Sexual Health Materials – A Consultation with Bisexual People The LGBT Health and Inclusion Project NHS Sussex and Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC), have commissioned a consortium of organisations providing services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people in the city to conduct a series of consultations with local LGBT people. The aim is to use the information gathered to feed into local service commissioning, planning and delivery. The partner agencies are: Brighton and Hove LGBT Switchboard, THT South, MindOut, Allsorts Youth Project, Brighton Bothways and the Clare Project. The consortium has employed a worker to coordinate the project, known as the LGBT Health and Inclusion Project (LGBT HIP). Please note, the following report presents information about the consultation and engagement work conducted by LGBT HIP and should not be taken as a position statement of any of LGBT HIPs Consortium partners. Background A local LGBT action-research project (Count Me In Too) presented a number of important findings in relation to sexual health and bisexual people.1 The research indicated that bisexual participants perceived that sexual health information available locally did not cater to their needs as bisexual people, and a significant proportion (28%) said that it was not appropriate to their sexual practices.2 The LGBT HIP consortium therefore identified a need to consult bisexual people about sexual health information available locally. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The Independent Community Advisory Board (CAB) submits its annual report reviewing the 2017 Pride in London (Pride) events. This report reflects issues raised at the CAB private review meeting held on 20 July 2017, which were based on community feedback and matters identified from CAB members’ own experiences. This year, for the first time, the CAB has also sought feedback from a range of major stakeholder organisations within the LGBT+ community. Their comments have been included, but anonymised. 1.2 The CAB is independent from the organisation of Pride. It advises the London LGBT+ Community Pride CIC (LLCP) Board and scrutinises their decisions. It provides guidance on inclusion, governance and other operational issues. Introduction This report presents data from an online survey of suicidal distress among LGBT people in Brighton and Hove. In any study it is important to be precise about the issue being researched. For the purposes of this survey, suicidal distress was defined as: feelings such as despair, worthlessness and hopelessness so that the person feels that they want to end their life. Background Social hostility, stigma and discrimination experienced by LGBT people have been linked to poorer mental health outcomes.1,2 Local research conducted by Johnson, et al, gathering primarily qualitative information, identified that discriminatory practices of homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism embedded in social institutions such as education, health, religion, the media and the family were linked with suicidal distress.

    TRANSGENDER STUDENTS The following information is borrowed from Mottet, L., & Ohle, J. (2003). Transitioning Our Shelters: A Guide to Making Homeless Shelters Safe for Transgender People . New York: The National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute. Transgender is an “umbrella” term used to describe a wide range of identities and experiences, and is used to refer to many types of people, including transsexual people; crossdressers; androgynous people; genderqueers; and other gender non-conforming people whose appearance or characteristics are perceived to be gender atypical. In its broadest sense, “transgender” encompasses anyone whose identity or behavior falls outside stereotypical gender expectations. It is important to understand that some people may identify as transgender but not fall into one of the subcategories discussed here. This publication attempts to identify many of the ways in which transgender individuals identify and express themselves, but this listing is in no way complete. Furthermore, it is particularly important to realize that many individuals, despite the fact that they may appear transgender to some, do not consider themselves to be transgender. It is important that we not label people transgender based on our perceptions, but instead use the words they use to describe themselves. All people have a gender identity. Gender identity refers to a person’s internal sense of being male, female or something else. For most people, one’s gender identity matches the sex assigned to them at birth—for example, a person born female typically identifies as a girl, and later, as a woman. For many transgender people, there may not be a match.

Creating a socialist society must also involve creating the conditions for ending oppression, including the oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people. Building a socialist world, run by working class people from the bottom up, requires winning masses of people to a vision of a new sort of society. It’s one where racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia are recognised for the cruel, pernicious and divisive ideas that they are. This is no easy task. Many people are torn between hopes for a better world—and a feeling that the rich and powerful who run the capitalist system are too strong to get rid of.
