They are known to influence the composition and structure of plant communities through their herbivorous and seed predation activities, as agents of soil aeration through their burrowing activities, pest controllers as the consume large amounts of insects and plant material, and as food for a variety of prey. Yet, the understanding of small mammal ecology is overshadowed by studies of large mammals as small mammals have very little tourism appeal and are often viewed as vermin benefiting from human disturbances. Even so, many small mammals are known to be highly sensitive to anthropogenic factors. This lack of information on small mammals also applies to the Kafue National Park (KNP), Zambia, including the Busanga Flood Plain as one of KNP’s critical habitats and a wetland of international importance (RAMSAR site number 1659). Not much is known about small mammals in the KNP, much less the influence of anthropogenic and non-antropogenic factors on their communities. Given that KNP is a protected area where the human foot print is minimized, anthropogenic factors that act upon the communities of small mammals include bush fires, that occur repeatedly (annually) on wildlands. -

The contract is valued at approximately £180 million and delivery of the vehicles is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2012. The announcement means that Force Protection Europe’s unique new light protected patrol vehicle can now lay claim to two important industry firsts. The Ocelot will be the first ever British designed and built protected patrol vehicle to include a fully composite pod to protect the occupants. This innovative module has been developed by drawing on technology from the motorsports industry. Ocelot will also be the first British military vehicle to accommodate the MoD’s new Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) requirements. The objective of the GVA project is to create a single, standard digital electronic and electrical architecture for UK vehicles that will enable crew to manage power and handle data efficiently on the vehicle, and for the vehicle to be easily adapted when the need arises. The award is also a significant boost to Force Protection Europe’s supply chain which is 90 percent British by value. Designed, developed and built in the UK by survivability specialist Force Protection Europe and automotive specialist Ricardo plc, together with Team Ocelot partners Thales, QinetiQ, Formaplex, DSG and Sula, Ocelot is the most highly protected and agile vehicle of its size and weight that is available today. -

ORYX VOL 32 NO 3 JULY 1998 Status of selected mammal species in North Myanmar Alan Rabinowitz and Saw Tun Khaing During 1996 and 1997, data on the status of selected mammal species were collected from a remote region of North Myanmar. Of the 21 species discussed in this paper, the black muntjac, stone marten and blue sheep are new records for the country. One species, the leaf muntjac, has never been described. At least three species that once inhabited the region - elephant, gaur and Sumatran rhinoceros - are no longer present, and the tiger has been nearly extirpated. Himalayan species that are declining elsewhere, such as takin, red goral and red panda, are still relatively abundant despite hunting pressures. Musk deer are in serious decline. The wolf, while not positively confirmed, may be an occasional inhabitant of North Myanmar. The Leopardus Tigrinus Is One of the Smallest Wild Cats in South America; and the Smallest Cat in Brazil (Oliveira-Santos Et Al
Mckenzie Brocker Conservation Biology David Stokes 20 February 2014 Leopardus Tigrinus Description: The Leopardus tigrinus is one of the smallest wild cats in South America; and the smallest cat in Brazil (Oliveira-Santos et al. 2012). L. tigrinus is roughly the size of a domestic house cat, with its weight ranging from 1.8-3.4 kg (Silva-Pereira 2010). The average body length is 710 millimeters and the cat’s tail is roughly one-third of its body length averaging 250 millimeters in length. Males tend to be slightly larger than the females (Gardner 1971). The species’ coat is of a yellowish-brown or ochre coloration patterned prominently with open rosettes (Trigo et al. 2013). Cases of melanism, or dark pigmentation, have been reported but are not as common (Oliveira-Santos et al 2012). These characteristics spots are what give the L. tigrinus its common names of little spotted cat, little tiger cat, tigrina, tigrillo, and oncilla. The names tigrillo, little tiger cat, and little spotted cat are sometimes used interchangeably with other small Neotropical cats species which can lead to confusion. The species is closely related to other feline species with overlapping habitat areas and similar colorations; namely, the ocelot, Leopardus pardalis, the margay, Leopardus weidii, Geoffroys cat, Leopardus geoffroyi, and the pampas cat, Leopardus colocolo (Trigo et al. 2013). Distribution: The L. tigrinus is reported to have a wide distribution from as far north as Costa Rica to as far south as Northern Argentina. However, its exact distribution is still under study, as there have been few reports of occurrences in Central America. -

Central Asian nomadic steppe pastoralist polities and agricultural oasis settlements mediated the East/West and North/South interactions. Earlier research has discovered that the growth/decline phases of empires in East and West Asia became synchronous around 140 BCE and that this synchrony lasted until about 1800 CE. This paper develops the comparative world-systems perspective on Central Asia and examines the growth and decline of settlements, empires and steppe confederations in Central Asia to test the hypothesis that the East/West empire synchrony may have been caused by linkages that occurred with and across Central Asia.
