Received: 2018.04.11; Accepted: 2018.09.08; Published: 2018.10.05 Abstract Despite initial progress in preclinical models, most known histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) used as a single agent have failed to show clinical benefits in nearly all types of solid tumours. Hence, the efficacy of HDACis in solid tumours remains uncertain. Herein, we developed a hybrid HDAC inhibitor that sensitized solid tumours to HDAC-targeted treatment. Methods: A hybrid molecule, Roxyl-zhc-84 was designed and synthesized with novel architecture. The pharmacokinetics and toxicity of Roxyl-zhc-84 were analysed. The antitumour effects of Roxyl-zhc-84 on solid tumours were investigated by assessing cell growth, apoptosis and cell cycle in vitro and in three in vivo mouse models and compared to those of corresponding control inhibitors alone or in combination. Gene set enrichment analysis was performed, and relevant JAK1-STAT3-BCL2 signalling was identified in vitro and in vivo in mechanistic studies. Results: Roxyl-zhc-84 showed excellent pharmacokinetics and low toxicity. The novel hybrid inhibitor Roxyl-zhc-84 induced cell apoptosis and G1-phase arrest in breast cancer and ovarian cancer cell lines. In three mouse models, oral administration of Roxyl-zhc-84 led to significant tumour regression without obvious toxicity. Moreover, Roxyl-zhc-84 dramatically improved the limited response of traditional HDAC inhibitors in solid tumours via overcoming JAK1-STAT3-BCL2-mediated drug resistance. Roxyl-zhc-84 treatment exhibited vastly superior efficacy than the combination of HDAC and JAK1 inhibitors both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion: Concurrent inhibition of HDAC and CDK using Roxyl-zhc-84 with additional JAK1 targeting resolved the limited response of traditional HDAC inhibitors in solid tumours via overcoming JAK1-STAT3-BCL2-mediated drug resistance, providing a rational multi-target treatment to sensitize solid tumours to HDACi therapy.     JULY 2020 The China Scholarship Council: An Overview CSET Issue Brief AUTHOR Ryan Fedasiuk Executive Summary Since the 2010s, U.S. officials have voiced concerns that the Chinese government may attempt to influence or exploit Chinese students on study abroad programs in its quest for foreign technology.1 Some Chinese student associations at U.S. universities have spoken out about the Chinese government’s efforts to provide unwanted “guidance.”2 However, in the first half of 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice charged several Chinese students with committing visa fraud and acting as agents of the People’s Republic of China.3 The extent to which the PRC government may attempt to influence Chinese students, by what means, and how to respond, remain the subjects of debate in the United States. One avenue by which the Chinese government could exert influence over students is through scholarship and exchange programs. This paper synthesizes Chinese-language resources on the China Scholarship Council— the primary vehicle by which the Chinese government provides scholarships. It describes the characteristics and features of the CSC’s largest programs but does not attempt to assess the intent of these programs beyond what is explicitly stated by Chinese primary sources. Key Takeaways ● The CSC sponsors about 12 percent of foreign students studying in China in a given year (roughly 65,000 students) and seven percent of Chinese students studying abroad (again, approximately 65,000 students). ● The CSC’s largest study abroad scholarship programs are for Chinese graduate students. ● No more than 18 of percent of Chinese students in the United States receive funding from the CSC, but the number is likely closer to seven percent (about 26,000 students).

The first chapter reviews the education and examination system in China, covering preschool education, primary education, secondary education, and higher education. Given the particular form of socialism with Chinese characteristics, understanding the context of school choice in China is rather interesting. It is clear that the education and examination system in China are strongly influenced by socio-cultural changes and conditions as well as Chinese culture. Efforts have been made by the State to improve education quality and promote equality across regions. However, challenges still remain, including disparities in education expenditures, admission rates, enrollment opportunities at the provincial level, and urban-rural education attainment. The second chapter estimates the effect of access to quality education on house prices using difference-in-differences methods and a large-scale policy change.
