Hello neighbors

Hello neighbors. Welcome to July! I hope you are having a great summer!

IT’S TIME TO RENEW YOUR CIVIC ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP! Over the past couple of weeks, residents received their 2018-19 Membership Dues Invoices and Packets. Included in your packets are information about the neighborhood, home safety tips, and a volunteer sign-up form. Please take a minute to review all of these materials. Your membership dues help us with improvements, maintenance, and improving the quality of life in the neighborhood. As a special incentive this year, pay your dues before July 28 and be entered into a drawing for a free gift basket from the Taste of Indiana (a special thank you to Taste of Indiana for donating the basket). Our dues remain a low $45 per year and the Civic Association does a great job of making sure that that money is used to keep our neighborhood safe, maintained and beautiful. Please do your part and help us keep Devonshire III & VI as one of the great places to live in Indianapolis!

Obviously, sometimes living in an attractive neighborhood with high home values brings unwanted attention. Over the past several weeks, we have had a series of car break-ins. We have been in contact with IMPD and have requested increased patrols throughout the neighborhood. Please be diligent in locking your vehicles at night and not leaving any valuables in your car and call IMPD if you see suspicious activity. Consider bringing your garage doors openers in to the house with you if you park in your driveway or on the street, and make sure you lock all doors, including from the garage to your home’s interior, at all times. We are entering a time of year when property crimes become more common. Please keep an eye on your homes and those of your neighbors, and remember to report all suspicious activity to 911 immediately.

The summer is off to a great start! Thanks to all of those who worked to make our neighborhood garage sale a success. If you help a sale this year, I hope you saw a lot of traffic and a good couple of days. We also held our annual bike ride this past month. This is becoming a very nice tradition in the neighborhood---thanks to those that organized and hosted the ride!

July brings firework celebrations. As we celebrate Independence Day, please be mindful and considerate of your neighbors, their properties, and their pets. Please pay attention to the hours and basic safe handling of fireworks--- we want everyone to have a fun and safe fourth of July!

Have a great July! Please pay your dues! And get out and enjoy the neighborhood this summer---stop by and see me if you are out and about in the neighborhood!

3 SHERYL HOLKO Devonshire III & VI Secretary Meeting Minutes JUNE 2018 [email protected]

Devonshire III & VI Meeting Minutes

The June 2018 meeting was held at the home of Peter & Barbara Mohr on June 18, 2018, at their home at 6308 Breamore. In attendance were Ron Taylor, Peter & Barbara Mohr, Nicole Todd, Sally Roscetti, and a couple of other helpers.

The meeting was centered around the annual Dues packet preparation: the annual neighborhood Dues invoices were prepared and then distributed.

Beyond the dues packet preparations there was some brief discussion on the recent rash of vehicles break-ins.

A new thing this year: the dues packets were stamped with the fun surprise that all neighbors who make their Association dues payment by July 28, 2018, will be entered into a drawing for a gift basket donated by “A Taste of Indiana.” We thank this great neighbor and encourage residents to drop into their new location near Blind Owl Brewery to browse through their awesome retail sales area.

There was no further business.

THE JULY NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING WILL BE HELD ON THURSDAY, JULY 20, 2017, AT 7PM AT THE HOME OF SHERYL HOLKO AT 6385 BRIXTON LANE. ALL NEIGHBORS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND.

Respectfully Submitted, Sheryl L. Holko Secretary

6 SALLY ROSCETTI From your Devonshire III & VI, Improvements Improvements Coordinator.... [email protected]

Hello Devonshire Neighbors,

Many thanks to our board members that were available to help stuff and distribute annual dues membership packets. I appreciated the information included in the packets pointing out all of the wonderful attributes of living in the Devonshire area. If you have not returned your dues to Nicole, please do so at your earliest convenience. By the by, kudos to all of our new board members! Way to jump into your new roles with both feet! So glad to have you as part of our team. Anyone interested in joining the board or just helping out for special projects, let us know or just show up to a board meeting. The fall picnic is a big event at which volunteers for planning and set up are always appreciated.

For many years, the Noll Landscaping Group has taken care of our snow plowing needs in the winter time. Earlier this year, Mike Noll let me know that they are discontinuing snowplowing services in the winter (but, of course, continuing their landscaping work all year long). Mike was kind enough to recommend a new company to take care of us and said that he would help them with tips for plowing our streets. In the interest of fairness and good stewardship as your improvements director, I would like to let neighbors know that we will be using a new company this winter. If you or someone you know has a snowplowing business that has an interest in making Devonshire III and VI a new customer, please email me with hourly rates for snow plowing, hourly rates for salt/snow melt spreading, and cost for salt/snow melt. Please include the company name and a contact person. The board and I will likely make a decision about a new company by October. My email address is [email protected] and is always on the back page of the Crier and in our 2017- 2018 neighborhood directory.

If you are out and about, how about taking a bag with you and picking up a little trash along the way? KIB will be hosting another neighborhood clean up with BRAG in July, but every little bit on other days helps too! As of this writing, I am still trying to confi rm the date of the clean up. When I fi nd out, I will defi nitely share.

See you around the ‘hood, Sally Roscetti, Improvements

We meet the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. We don’t care if you’ve read the book. You don’t need to RSVP (although sometimes we switch houses last minute - not a bad idea to call to be safe). Just show up and enjoy good company and good discussion. 7 CRIME DORIA LYNCH Devonshire III & VI, Crime Watch WATCH [email protected]

Hi neighbors

June unfortunately brought a number of reported vehicle break-ins, primarily of vehicles that had been left unlocked. We also had a reported theft in the neighborhood, along with a report of a solicitor/panhandler who appeared to be operating for his own needs rather than for a legitimate business or charity.

This isn’t terribly surprising given the time of year, but it is cause for concern. The easier targets we present to criminals, the more criminals will be attracted to the area. It’s in all of our best interests to report all suspicious activity, people, and vehicles to 911 immediately. After the spate of vehicle break-ins, I contacted IMPD to request a “patrol when possible” presence in the neighborhood and will do so again as needed.

If you do become the victim of theft, please report the incident to the police using the non-emergency number (311 from a cell phone, 317-327-3811 from landlines). Be sure to have the serial number of the stolen item and it’s monetary value, as they will request that information when filing a report. Indeed, it is important that you keep a record of the serial numbers of all valuable items you own, especially guns and electronics. For items like jewelry that do not have a serial number, take and save a photograph of the item. If police are able to recover your property, this information will expedite its return to you.

There are a number of simple ways to keep your property safe and make Devonshire less of a target for criminals. A lot of these actions are common sense, and yet also commonly forgotten, so let’s review: • Keep your vehicles locked at all times • Remove valuable items and all bags from your vehicle; a thief won’t know that your laptop bag is empty until he or she breaks in • Keep the exterior of your home well-lit, whether you are home or away. Automatic lights with dawn to dusk sensors make this easy • Keep the perimeter of your home free from overgrown shrubs and bushes • Utilize all locks on all of your doors, including storm doors and the door that leads from your garage to your house • Bring in your garage door opener from your vehicle if you do not park in your garage • Check window and door locks after having workers in your home; thieves have been known to unlock a window while working, then return later to access the residence through the window • Lock garages and sheds, and use caution when doing yard work; lock doors and windows that aren’t visible to you while working outside

There are a number of other simple steps you can take to secure your property; I encourage you to do a simple internet search for more tips.

In the meantime, stay safe, stay cool, and stay vigilant!
