OWA PRESIDENT: Julian Marcus MRCVS The Old Warwickian www.oldwarwickians.org SUMMER 2017 | ISSUE 28 www.warwickschoolconnect.org Historic school photos discovered on ebay Photo: Manuel Harlan. © Places still available for summer reunions OW news from Brexit to The Old Vic THE OLD WARWICKIAN Warwick School Archives WS Camera Club 1903-05 Historic Warwick School slides, dating from 1903 to 1905, have been discovered on ebay and bought by School Archivist Gervald Frykman. Peter O’Grady has kindly digitised the glass plate positives (magic lantern slides) which were taken by Warwick School Camera Club between 1903 and 1905. Warwick School Camera Club was founded in 1901 by Rev Robert Percival Brown, the Headmaster between 1896 and 1902. The discovered slides are the work of the Camera Club, which flourished under Mr Howlett, the school choir master and organist, between 1903 and 1905. The Portcullis from July 1904 records: “The third annual excursion of the Camera Club took place on [Wednesday] June 8th. The bicycles and the brake left the school at about 2:15. The first place visited was Guy’s Cliffe, where a great many successful photographs were taken. From Guy’s Cliffe we proceeded to Leek Wootton and from Camera Club outing 1904. thence to Yarningdale, via Wroxall, where tea was provided. On the whole the light was fairly good and most of the photographs taken turned out successful. The brake left Yarningdale about 7:30, and returned home via Claverdon.” From The Portcullis, March 1905: “Camera Club: Mr Howlett gave a very interesting and instructive lecture in the President’s Room on “How to make lantern slides”. PRIVACY is James Graham’s first play to be staged at the Donmar Warehouse, and tackles one of the most important issues of our time. Curated by Tom Scutt, Donmar Associate Artist, the festival invites the general public, leading and emerging talent, and young people to enjoy a designers’ Open Studio, panel discussions and podcasts with leading theatre-makers, and careers workshops for design students. Participating designers include Es Devlin, Lizzie Clachan, Anna Fleischle, Chloe Lamford, Peter McKintosh, Tom Piper, Rosanna Vize and Rosie Elnile. “This is a way for us to not only show the public and young students the bones of what we do, but it’s also an opportunity for designers who are already established to connect, meet and look at each other’s practices” says Tom. “It is about accessibility and demystifying the role. It is easy to overlook the complexities of the work designers do.” This guide has been produced to accompany the festival. The aim of the guide is to capture what today’s world-class theatre designers think of their role in the production process, and reflect on the varying processes and visual approaches they use to employ their craft.
